Longtime FOX o-and-o News Director PHIL METLIN announced his retirement from WTTG-TV today, effective immediately. An email to him seeking more details was returned with this message:

I have retired from my position as News Director here at WTTG effective August 29, 2013. If you need to contact our newsroom, please call 202-895-3002. Thank you.

Phil’s been the ND in Washington since early 2008. He’d earlier held the same job at Fox owned stations in Philadelphia (WTXF-TV) and Tampa (WTVT-TV).

It’s been a busy week with several new NDs to share with you. We’ll have that in our full report tomorrow.

New News Director Opening:

KPHO-TV, Phoenix, AZ…in one of several stories we reported to you earlier this week, MICHELLE DONALDSON is leaving this Meredith owned CBS affiliate to return to Albuquerque. More on that below. Michelle’s been the ND here for five years.

Newly Named News Directors:

KMSP/WFTC-TV, Minneapolis, MN…MARIAN DAVEY becomes a news director for the first time as she is promoted at this FOX-owned duopoly. She’s been the assistant ND there for ten years, and has served as the interim ND since BILL DALLMAN left in June to become ND for Fox Sports 1. Marian first joined the station in 2002 as managing editor. She also spent 14 years at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, starting as an intern and rising to managing editor.

Chapuis

KTXL-TV, Sacramento, CA…ED CHAPUIS returns to Sacramento and an ND job as he joins this Tribune owned FOX affiliate. Ed’s worked for KCRA-TV in Sacramento for eleven years over two stints, including as ND from 1997-2002. From 2003 until earlier this year he was ND for KTVU-TV in San Francisco/Oakland. Ed’s also been an ND in Las Vegas and worked in Chicago. He replaces BRANDON MERCER who left in June after five years as ND.

Carl

WTNH-TV, Hartford/New Haven, CT…another former news director returns to the job as AL CARL has been promoted to ND for this LIN Media owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the Managing Editor here for the past 18 months. Al’s a former ND in Omaha, Savannah, and for two stations in Huntsville. He’s also worked for two stations in Kansas City.

Schrader

Al’s former boss at WTNH, ERIK SCHRADER, has also been promoted. He’s already on the job as general manager of LIN’s newly acquired KSNW-TV, the NBC affiliate in Wichita. Erik was ND at WTNH for two years. He has a varied background: ND in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and for stations in Joplin and Springfield, MO, and Savannah, GA. He’s also worked in production, as a reporter, and as a sports director.

KOB-TV, Albuquerque, NM…as teased above, MICHELLE DONALDSON is returning to Albuquerque to be the next ND for this Hubbard-owned NBC affiliate. She’s spent the last five years as ND for KPHO-TV in Phoenix but spent eight years (five as ND) at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque. Here’s the KOB story on her hire. Michelle has also worked in Detroit, where she began her career in radio.

We told you earlier about BOB SULLIVAN‘s promotion to VP/Programming for Scripps. Here’s the company’s news release. Bob’s been VP/Content since 2010, working on new, first run program development while still working with stations. Scripps will hire a new VP of News, and that person will then hire a second Director of News Strategies. Bob’s a former GM in Washington, and has worked in Phoenix (two stations) Jacksonville, FL, Denver, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, and Madison, WI, and ran the Arizona Super Bowl Committee for three years.

Another former Scripps/Phoenix ND, JOE HENGEMUEHLER, wrote this week to let me know that he’s going to start a monthly newsletter tied to his new business, Joe Hengemuehler Consulting. MATT PAPAYCIK returns to his first TV station as the new nightside EP for WINK-TV in Ft. Myers. He’s been a producer for WKMG-TV in Orlando for the past 2 1/2 years, but began his career as an A.P. at WINK, eventually rising to 11:00 producer.

After nine years as a producer at WTHR-TV in Indianapolis, DUANE BECKER moves into management as an EP for WCSH-TV in Portland, ME. The move gets Duane closer to his family on the East Coast.

The FAA has grounded drone camera efforts at both the University of Missouri and Nebraska Univeristy.

GM NOTES:

We told you above of ERIK SCHRADER‘s appointment to GM at KSNW-TV in Wichita.

But that’s not the only GM move this week. DAVE BOYLAN announced he’s stepping down as GM of WPLG-TV in Miami after ten years. Dave told the staff he’s taking a unique position within the industry that he couldn’t yet reveal. He’s a former GM at FOX owned stations in Los Angeles, Tampa, and Greensboro, and has also worked in Cleveland and Chicago.

PAUL RENNIE returns to Indianapolis as GM of Tribune’s WXIN/WTTV. He’s been the General Sales Manager for Tribune’s KCPQ-TV in Seattle, but went to that job from a similar position at WRTV in Indianapolis.

Tuesday, August 20, 2013 UPDATE:

A surprising development from Phoenix prompts an unusual third consecutive day for an UPDATE.

MICHELLE DONALDSON, who’s been the ND at KPHO-TV (a CBS affiliate owned by Meredith) for the past five years, is leaving the station to return to Albuquerque.

She’s been named ND for Hubbard’s KOB-TV, the NBC affiliate there, replacing JOHN MASON who resigned for family reasons in June after six months as news director. Michelle spent eight years at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque before moving to KPHO in 2008.

She’s also worked in Detroit, where she began her career in radio.

It’s been a busy week, which means a full newsletter sometime this weekend.

Tuesday, August 20, 2013 UPDATE:

A big management promotion at Scripps and bigger/better jobs for two veteran newsmen are featured in this UPDATE.

Sullivan

WTNH wasted no time in promoting AL CARL to be the new ND at this ABC affiliate. Al’s been the managing editor there since April, 2012. He’s been an ND in Omaha, Savannah, and two stations in Huntsville, AL, and has held news management positions at two stations in Kansas City. He’s also worked in Albany, NY, and Saginaw, MI.

Monday, August 19, 2013 UPDATE:

A FOX o-and-o promotes from within to fill its vacant news director position.

KMSP/WFTC-TV in Minneapolis has promoted MARIAN DAVEY, who’s been the Assistant ND (and interim ND since BILL DALLMAN left in June) to be the next ND for this duopoly. She joined the station in 2002 as Managing Editor and was promoted to Assistant ND a year later. She previously spent 14 years at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, rising from intern to Managing Editor.

Dallman left after seven years as ND here (and five at another FOX o-and-o, KDVR-TV in Denver) to become the News Director for Fox Sports 1, which I’m guessing you know by the barrage of promos, launched this past Saturday.

He’s also worked in Colorado Springs, Denver, San Diego, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Flint/Saginaw, MI, and Tallahassee, FL. Don replaces JON FISCHER at the helm of the news department for this Bay City Televison owned station. Jon left the station earlier this summer after less than a year as ND.

HELEN SWENSON is leaving The Weather Channel for a General Manager job at an as yet undisclosed station. (We’ll tell you when it’s announced.) She first joined the Weather Channel in 2009 and is currently Senior VP for Live Programming. Helen’s a former ND in Seattle and West Palm Beach and has also worked in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Orlando and Miami, and as a consultant for Magid.

KOVR-TV in Sacramento has promoted LEIGH ANNE KEYS to Dayside Executive Producer. She’s been the 10:00 PM producer there, and previously worked as an EP for another Sacramento station, and as a producer in Philadelphia.

Veteran broadcaster DAVE COCHRAN wrote to promote his new e-book, NewsCycles, which he tells me is his take on how to win viewers in the TV wars. Greetings:

Apologies for our tardy posting this week, but hopefully the content will make up for that.

We have ONE new opening, that created by the departure of a longtime Alabama ND, and TWO newly named NDs, one in a top 15 market.

That leaves 25 stations with news director openings, THREE of which are featured in paid ads below, along for ads for an EP opening in Kansas City, a news content manager position in a great city if you like golf, and an ad for a newscast producer in Spartanburg, SC.

We have updates to our list of Other News Management Openings, some of which are in really large markets.

WAAY-TV, Huntsville, AL…KEITH LOWHORNE is leaving this Calkins owned ABC affiliate after five years as ND. He’s taken a job as Director of Development for the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Keith spent more than 30 years at WHNT-TV in Huntsville, starting as a photographer and rising to director of news operations before leaving the station when it was sold in 2007.

KCPQ-TV, Seattle, WA…ERICA HILL has been promoted to ND for this Tribune owned FOX affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND here (and also ND for sister station KRCW-TV, the CW affiliate in Portland, OR). Erica has also worked in Chicago and Boise, and for Northwest Cable News in Seattle. She replaces JON BRADY who’s been promoted to the new position of director of content and news programming. Jon’s been ND here for three years.

KGUN-TV, Tucson, AZ…veteran news director TOM BURKE starts Monday as the next ND for this Journal Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. He most recently was ND for WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA, a job he left last December. Tom has also been an ND in Sacramento, Fresno, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, OH, and has worked in Detroit, Greenville, NC, and Presque Isle, ME. He replaces FORREST CARR who resigned last March after three years as ND to work on some writing projects. (See Names in the News for an update on Forrest’s first novel.)

Former Boston, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco News Director MARK BERRYHILL will be the Senior EP of a new syndicated TV program, OK! TV, which will debut next month in 85% of the country. Mark (who also served as VP/News for Meredith) tells me the show will have newsrooms in Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas.

Longtime news director FORREST CARR, who left KGUN-TV in Tucson last year to concentrate on some writing projects, has a new novel available for the Kindle and Kindle app. It’s called Messages, and it’s set in a medium market TV newsroom in the mid ’80s. This week’s report finds TWO new ND openings, while THREE stations have new NDs we’ll tell you about…bringing out total of open ND jobs to 25.

Steve first joined the station as a vacation relief photographer in 1986 and moved up the ranks, including Managing Editor and Assistant ND before being promoted to ND in December, 2009. Kelly is a 31 year veteran of the station who most recently has been the Director of Digital Media. She’s also been a reporter, producer, and assignment editor, and becomes the third ND in just over two years. DAN DENNISON, who’s been the ND for the past two years, will become a roving features reporter.

KRCG-TV, Jefferson City, MO…ROB MESSER will be the next ND for this CBS affiliate. He’s currently an EP in Tucson, has been an ND in Boise, and has also worked in Salt Lake City, Albuquerque and Green Bay. Rob replaces JOHN SHELBY who left the station in May after a little more than a year as ND. The station is in the process of being sold by Barrington Broadcasting to Sinclair.

WVVA-TV, Bluefield, WV…ELISABETH SHAFFER stays in West Virginia as she has been named ND for this Quincy owned NBC affiliate. She was the ND for WOWK-TV in Charleston/Huntington for about a year and worked for WCHS-TV in Charleston for 30 years in a number of positions. She replaces MARK RIGSBY who left the station in January after three years as news director.

This person will work closely with our graphics and promotion teams as well as the news management team.

Obituary:

PHIL PALIGRAF, a one time General Manager for WTTV in Indianapolis, died last week at the age of 55. A coroner ruled he died of natural causes after his vehicle was found crashed in a heavily wooded area. He had most recently had been working as a Regional Vice President for Comcast.

KENNAN OLIPHANT has been promoted within Raycom to be the Assistant News Director for WLBT-TV in Jackson, MS. He’s been the EP for Raycom’s WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach. Kennan’s worked on air in Dayton, Evansville, and Monroe, LA, and as an associate producer in Detroit.

BRETT AKAGI has joined Kansas University to manage its student media operations, including KUJH-TV and the University Daily Kansan. He most recently was Assistant ND for KSHB-TV in Kansas City. Brett spent two years senior video producer in the multimedia department at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and was director of photography for KARE-TV in Minneapolis for more than ten years.
