Thursday, August 29, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Sorry to tell you that a veteran news director…who retired in 2015…has lost his battle with cancer.

Bark

   Bark

CHUCK BARK, who spent more than ten years as ND for WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge and 14 years running the newsroom at Mobile’s WALA-TV has died. WBRZ posted this tribute on its website. I believe he was 67 years old.

He worked his entire career in only three markets…in addition to Baton Rouge and Mobile, he also worked in Memphis.

Chuck was a good guy and left behind many journalists he had trained over the years.

He’s survived by his wife Brenda.

I’ll hope to have information on services and memorial contributions in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s been a VERY busy week, with SIX new news directors and THREE new openings.

Of note: all SIX of the new news directors are women and FOUR are at Tegna stations.

These changes leaves 27 stations looking for a new news director.

TWO of those 27 openings are among our THREE Paid Help Wanted ads this week. And we welcome Weather Metrics back as they continue to be a regular supporter of this effort.

We have TWO obituaries this week, one of a former anchor, news director, and GM, and one for a man whose career ranged from the National Enquirer to CNN to sports betting publications.

And there are a handful of items in our Names in the News section. All that and more as you read on.

WxMetCopyWeek1-3

Newly Named News Directors:

Jurgemeyer

Megan J.

KUSA-TV, Denver, CO…MEGAN JURGEMEYER has been promoted to news director at this Tegna owned NBC station. She’s been the managing editor for the last four years and has worked at KUSA since 2013. Megan also worked at another Denver station and in Grand Junction. In this unedited video interview on the station’s website, she explains how she had another career before TV news. Megan will report to Director of Content ERIC VALADEZ and replaces LINDA KOTSAFTIS who left in May.

Fowler

Fowler

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…three time Chicago news director CAROL FOWLER (eleven years combined at WBBM-TV, WFLD-TV, and WGN-TV) returns to St. Louis as Director of Content (some might call that news director) for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. More on her hire in this item from the KSDK website. Carol went to Missouri and has family in St, Louis. Learn more about her in this eight year old bio from her alma mater. She replaces TIFFANI LUPENSKI who left earlier this year after less than a year and half as ND. Tiffani is now the Direct of Content at WBBM-TV in Chicago.

McDaniel

McDaniel

KFMB-TV, San Diego, CA…another Tegna station, another veteran news director as DANA McDANIEL returns to California as Director of Content (aka News Director) for this CBS affiliate. Dana’s spent the last two years as ND for Tribune’s-probably-soon-to-be-Nexstar-at-least-for-a-while WDAF-TV, the FOX affiliate in Kansas City. But before moving to KC, Dana was ND for FOX o-and-o KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco. That’s the last of her three ND jobs for FOX, WTTG-TV in Washington and WJBK-TV in Detroit. She has also worked in Chicago. Dana replaces DEAN ELWOOD who left in March after eight years as ND and 23 at the station.

Eck

Eck

WCMH-TV, Columbus, OH…not another Tegna station, but another veteran ND returns as DENISE ECK is the new news director for this Nexstar owned CBS station. Here’s the memo from GM KEN FREEDMAN. It’s a return to Ohio for Denise, who was an ND in Dayton and an Assistant ND in Cincinnati. Most recently, she’d been the ND for WSMV-TV in Nashville, a job she left earlier this year. She’s also been an ND in Topeka, and worked as an anchor, reporter, and investigative reporter in a number of markets. Denise replaces DAVE CILIBERTI who was promoted last month to become ND for sister Nexstar NBC affiliate WFLA-TV in Tampa.

Weppler

Weppler

WTOL-TV, Toledo, OH…this is a Tegna station though a first time ND. LAUREN WEPPLER has been promoted from her old role as Assistant ND. She’s been at this CBS affiliate since April 2006, coming from Myrtle Beach where she had transitioned into management from job as morning anchor. Lauren had earlier worked in two small West Virgina markets More on Lauren in this profile from HER alma mater. She replaces ANTHONY KNOPPS who left in June, just a few months after Tegna took over, after four years as ND

KAVU-TV, Victoria, TX…ROXANN FISHER returns to a newsroom as ND for this Morgan Murphy owned ABC affiliate. She has lots of experience in Texas newsrooms, as you’ll learn on her linkedin page. She replaces AMIE HUDSPETH who moved to CNN’s Headline News in Atlanta as Script Supervisor for Weekend Morning Express.

New News Director Openings:

Knutsen

Knutsen

KTTV, Los Angeles, CA…KRIS KNUTSEN has left this FOX o-and-o after about three years as news director. She had been the Assistant ND for Tribune’s KTLA-TV for five years before moving to KTTV. She’d earlier spent about 30 years working at KNBC-TV and the Local News Service.

Her replacement will be the FOURTH ND here since 2011 when longtime ND JOSE RIOS was promoted to corporate. Her departure occurred shortly after the arrival of new GM BILL LAMB, who came from Louisville, which brings to mind this sage thought that a loyal reader shared recently:

30 days hath September, April, and any sitting ND who gets a new GM.

WDAF-TV, Kansas City, MO…we reported above that DANA McDANIEL was returning to California to become ND for KFMB-TV, Tegna”s CBS affiliate in San Diego.

Snuffer

Snuffer

WSIL-TV, Harrisburg, IL…MIKE SNUFFER has left this Quincy Media owned ABC affiliate during the month in which he celebrated his 16th anniversary as ND here. He left about eight months after an ownership change. Mike’s a former ND for KLBK/KAMC-TV in Lubbock and KCEN-TV in Temple, TX. He tells me he’s looking for a new challenge. Here’s his linkedin page.

Wuzzardo

Wuzzardo

And I wanted to update an item from two weeks ago. We told you that KEVIN WUZZARDO had left WWAY-TV in Wilmington but did not know where he was going. We’ve now learned he’s headed to WHBQ-TV in Memphis as Managing Editor, and he left behind this farewell note to his former city.

Barnett

Barnett

WAYNE BARNETT, who worked as an anchor, news director and general manager, died this week. He was an anchor in Baton Rouge, ND and anchor at WALA-TV in Mobile and later served as general manager for WDSU-TV in New Orleans and as an ND and GM for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee. I couldn’t find a detailed obituary (if you’ve seen one please send it along) but can share this tribute from one of his former stations.

Mann

Mann

BOB MANN also died this week. He was 68 and had been out of our business for more than 30 years, but had a interesting career. He worked for the Chicago Tribune, the National Enquirer, for stations in Dayton and Cleveland, and also for CNN. He moved to Vegas, owned a business that printed materials for sports books in casinos, and also wrote for sports betting publications. One of those publications honored him with this story.

Full disclosure: Bob and I have been friends since his Cleveland days at WKYC-TV. We attended each others’ weddings and I saw him several times a year. He was never shy about what he saw as the shortcomings of the current state of journalism. Bob is survived by his wife of some 20 years, SONDRA. A celebration of life will be held later this year.

LUIS CRUZ is back at the San Diego Union-Tribune as Director of Community and Public Relations. He’s a former ND in Yuma, an anchor in Las Vegas, and a reporter in San Diego. Media Moves has more.

A tip of the hat to Little Rock’s KATV which donated its archives to the University of Arkansas in 2009, the Foundation that donated $1.5 million to have it digitized, and to two former KATV news directors who are involved in the project. Details here.

Wednesday, August 21, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings, again:

A second UPDATE in the same day usually means big news, and I think this falls into that category.

Fowler

Fowler

Three time Chicago news director CAROL FOWLER is leaving the Windy City to become news director for Tegna’s KSDK-TV in St. Louis.

She’s spent eleven years as a news director in Chicago at three different stations. Her Linkedin page has her history, including what she’s been up to since leaving her last ND job 7 1/2 years ago.

Carol replaces TIFFANI LUPENSKI at this NBC affiliate. She left in March after fewer than 18 months as ND. Ironically, Tiffani now works in Chicago as the Director of Content at WBBM-TV, one of the stations for which Carol had once been ND.

It’s a small business, as you already know.

Who knows what surprises lie ahead for the rest of the week?

regards,

Wednesday, August 21, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

We have changes in two top 35 markets to share with you today.

Knutsen

Knutsen

In Los Angeles, veteran LA newswoman KRIS KNUTSEN has left Fox’s KTTV after about three years as news director. She had been the Assistant ND for Tribune’s KTLA-TV for five years before moving to KTTV. She’d earlier spent about 30 years working at KNBC-TV and the Local News Service.

Her replacement will be the FOURTH ND for this FOX o-and-o since longtime ND JOSE RIOS was promoted to the corporate staff in 2011.

Eck

Eck

And at WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH, DENISE ECK returns to Ohio and Nexstar as she joins this NBC affiliate as ND. Here’s the email from General Manager KEN FREEDMAN.

Earlier in her career, Denise was a news director in Dayton (WDTN-TV) and an Assistant ND for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. Most recently, she’d been the ND for WSMV-TV in Nashville, a job she left earlier this year. She’s also been an ND in Topeka, and worked as an anchor, reporter, and investigative reporter in a number of markets.

She replaces DAVE CILIBERTI who was promoted last month to become ND for sister Nexstar NBC affiliate WFLA-TV in Tampa.

More on both these stories…and all the week’s news…in our full report later this weekend.

Greetings:

We start tonight with breaking news.

(Hey, way too many newscasts I watch start that way…why can’t I?)

Late this afternoon word came that Verizon;/FIOS will close its hyper local New York area cable news operation later this year, costing 150 people their jobs. Details here.

Turning to other news (another cliche!) it’s been a busy week, despite my late Friday comment in an UPDATE that it had been slow.

There are FOUR new news directors, except that:

None of them are really NEW, they’ve all been ND’s before in top 30 markets, and

ALL of them had been out of a newsroom for more than a year.

There are also TWO new ND openings bringing our list of ND openings to 30. THREE of those openings are in Columbus (TWO the Ohio one, ONE in the Georgia one) and TWO of them are in Bluefield/Oak Hill (BOTH, of course, are in West Virginia).

And TWO of those ND openings are among our FOUR paid help wanted ads this week, while the other two are for Morning EP openings in top 20 markets.

No obituaries, thankfully, just ONE new GM to tell you about, and a handful of times in Names in the News.

We’ll be back with more after this commercial break. (Still another cliche!)

She replaces DAN WILSON who exited in June after 3 1/2 years as ND.

Brady

WPEC-TV, West Palm Beach, FL…JON BRADY will be the next ND for this Sinclair Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate. Jon’s most recent ND job was at XETV in San Diego which ended when the station shut down its news department. His background is extensive: you can check it out on his Linkedin page. At WPEC, he replaces ADAM HENNING who left earlier this summer and is now ND for WHBQ-TV in Memphis.

Szulczewski

Szulczewski

WAFF-TV, Huntsville, AL…another veteran newsperson returns to the job as JULIE SZULCZEWSKI is the new ND for this Gray Televsision owned NBC affiliate. She’s also been an ND in Albuquerque, and has worked in Orlando, Miami, St. Louis and Ft. Myers. Julie replaces BOB MORFORD who retired after three years as ND here and 40 in our business.

Snead

August 11, 2019

Friday, August 16, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Today’s UPDATE brings news of a news director’s resignation at a network o-and-o in a top 25 market.

Zeller

Zeller

JEFF ZELLER has stepped down as Vice President and News Director for FOX’s WOFL-TV in Orlando. He’s been the ND there for almost ten years and was the Assistant ND for 3 1/2 years before ascending to the top job. Jeff also worked in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Tampa, Cincinnati, and Dayton.

The Orlando Sentinel’s longtime TV writer HAL BOEDEKER has more.

The change comes about a month after a GM change at WOFL.

MIKE McCLAIN was promoted to GM here less than a month ago. Mike’s a former ND for three FOX stations who had been GM for FOX’s Charlotte operation, WJYZ-TV.

We hope to have more on this story and the rest of the week’s news (fairly slow so far) in our full newsletter later this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Great to see so many of you in South Florida this week for the NABJ convention, which, I believe, had record attendance. I know the job fair was packed and many exhibitors ran out of time to meet with candidates.

It’s a busy and full newsletter, with TWO new ND openings (one in a top ten market) and TWO newly named news directors (also ONE in a top ten market.)

There’s a new paid help wanted ad for an EP job in San Francisco, and there are ads for THREE of the 32 openings we have on our always unofficial list of ND openings.

There’s an obituary for a ground breaking Kentucky broadcaster, a ton of items about former news directors (most of them long tenured), a new Assistant ND at an NBC o-and-o, and a new job for a veteran TV researcher.

And there’s also a lot of general manager items, including a new GM at a network owned station in a top five market.

Read on and enjoy!

We’re tardy in reporting the retirement of MIKE PIGGOTT who retired last spring after 18 years as Purdue University’s Director of Community Relations. Friends can ask Mike about his golf game with an email to: mpiggott@purdue.edu

Choate

Choate

One of the great things about travel is it allows you to connect with old friends. I had lunch (with others) with DAVE CHOATE, the assistant ND at WCKT-TV (now WSVN-TV) when I worked there. He was a great mentor to me, then a 23 year old producer. Dave later became ND at Channel 7 and also ran the NBC News bureau in Miami before leaving TV to run a substance abuse commission. He’s now 83 and is spending some time shooting some remarkable scenes, which you can see (and purchase) via this website. Friends can reach out to Dave via email: choatedm@aol.com

KYW-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Philadelphia, wasted no time replacing BRIEN KENNEDY who left the station last month. The new GM there is BRANDIN STEWART who’s spent the last 17 years at NBC owned stations, the last five as VP/Sales at WMAQ-TV in Chicago.

Friday, August 9, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

The ‘nationwide search’ for a new news director for Tegna’s WFAA-TV in Dallas ended up…with someone already in the newsroom.

LESLIE McCARDEL has been promoted to Executive News Director for this ABC affiliate. The full story is in the station’s news release.

Leslie’s been the director of content and strategy at WFAA since 2016 when she returned after a brief hiatus that’s explained in the news release. She first joined the station in 2006.

She’s also worked for sister Tegna station KHOU-TV in Houston and at KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Leslie replaces CAROLYN MUNGO who was promoted to station manager at WFAA after seven years as ND.

I’ll be on the floor at NABJ today and hope to see many of you there.

Wednesday, August 7, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

It’s our favorite kind of UPDATE…where we get to report the promotion of a news director to general manager.

Granato

Granato

So we’re happy to tell you that WENDY GRANATO has been bumped up to general manager for KTRK-TV in Houston, the ABC owned station there. More in this story.

She replaces HENRY FLORSHEIM, himself a former news director, who announced his retirement in April after 22 years at the station.

Wendy’s been the ND here since 2014 and has worked at the station for 17 years. Before her promotion to news director, she was the EP of special projects.

Wendy started on air in Lafayette, LA, and then moved to Houston to work for KNWS-TV, a now defunct 24 hour news channel. She later became ND there.

More on this in our full newsletter this weekend. And I hope to see many of you at the NABJ conference, where I arrive tomorrow.

Greetings:

I hope to see many of you at NABJ this weekend in South Florida. I’ll be on the floor Thursday afternoon and all day Friday.

We can talk about (but why would we?) the TWO newly named news directors in this week’s report, or the FOUR new ND openings.

We have paid help wanted ads for THREE of the 31 opening in our list, TWO of the FOUR new openings are among those advertised.

We have details on a former network o-and-o news director and GM joining the corporate staff at Nexstar. There’s also a new assistant ND at a New York City station, and a former North Caroline ND has written a book.

And there’s ONE obituary, for a former WTOL-TV news director (obviously not me!)

All that and more as you read on.

He’s been the interim ND since JOHN LaPORTE left in June after eight years to become ND for KIRO-TV in Seattle.

KTTC-TV, Rochester, MN…MICHELE GORS returns to a newsroom as she’ll take over this Quincy Media owned NBC affiliate. Michele tells me she’s from northern Iowa so it’s a return to familiar territory. She’s a former ND in Wichita, Memphis and Cedar Rapids, and spent seven years as GM for Wichita’s PBS station, KPTS-TV, a job she left in 2015. (You may remember last year Michele was named ND at another Quincy station, WAOW-TV in Wausau, WI, but a family matter prevented the move then.) At KTTC, she’ll replace NOEL SEDERSTROM who is retiring after more than 11 years as ND.
