January 26, 2020

Monday, January 27, 2020 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A new job for a veteran journalist as he takes a news director job in the #3 market.

Hugo Balta

   Balta

HUGO BALTA was named ND today for WTTW-TV in Chicago. You may not recognize the call letters: it’s a public TV station there. And it’s a newly created title…Hugo replaces MARY FIELD who retired last summer after 23 years. Her title was executive producer.

More details in the station’s news release. And Chicago media columnist ROBERT FEDER has his story here.

Hugo most recently worked at MSNBC as a senior producer. He’s also been an ND for Telemundo in New York, worked at WCBS-TV, and spent seven years at ESPN. He’s a two time president of NAHJ.

More in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Greetings:

The rapid pace of news director changes that started the new year slowed a bit this week with just TWO new openings. And I’m not aware of any new NDs, so our list of open ND jobs rises to 31.

Again, we have THREE paid help wanted ads for different and unique opportunities.

Among our THREE obituaries are one of a former ND and GM, another of a longtime educator who once served as an ND, and the third is for a longtime Tribune executive and WGN-TV GM.

In Names in the News, you’ll learn of the retirement of a former ND and longtime Cox executive, a new job for a multi-time ND, and I’ll tell you why a longtime Los Angeles newsman wanted me to share the news of his health battle with you.

Read on for all that and more…

Newly Named News Directors:

To the best of my knowledge, no new hires this week. If you know of some, please pass that news along via email: rick@rickgevers.com

And one correction to last week’s report. We told you that STACEY PATTBERG had been promoted to ND for News 12 New Jersey, and that was wrong. Stacey’s the new news boss for News 12 Connecticut. Apologies for both Stacey and N12NJ ND JEREMY SETTLE.

New News Director Openings:

Morgan

Morgan

WREX-TV, Rockford, IL…congratulations to JOSH MORGAN who’s been promoted to station manager. He joined the station in March, 2013, as news director. During his time at WREX the station won a National Edward R. Murrow Award. Josh had been an EP for WPSD-TV in Paducah, KY, and earlier worked as a producer in Green Bay, WI. WREX is owned by Quincy Media and is an NBC affiliate.

Stanfield

Stanfield

WDHN-TV, Dothan, AL…this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate is advertising for a news director. My records show BEN STANFIELD, an anchor there, was promoted to ND in January, 2018. He is still on the station’s website, so perhaps he is going to give up the ND part of his portfolio. He’s off to WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA, to anchor the morning news.  Ben’s been an anchor at the station for about five years and earlier worked for another Dothan station.

Obituaries:

Cole

Cole

TERRY COLE, a former news director and general manager, died January 17 at the age of 63 in Rapid City, SD. A private funeral was held last Friday. He served as ND for at least three stations and GM for at least three others. This obituary outlines his career. His tenure as ND at WTSP-TV in Tampa ended when he and a colleague were accused of tapping into a competitor’s computer. Terry pled no contest and was sentenced to five years probation.

Gelatt

Gelatt

During a 45 year career on the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, ROD GELATT trained hundreds of future journalists, me among them. He did so with kindness, humor, and a strong sense of what it meant to be a journalist. Rod died last Sunday at the age of 93. During his tenure at Missouri, Rod served, at different times, as ND of both KOMU-TV and KBIA-FM. More on his life and legacy here. There will be a memorial service at a later date in Columbia.

SHELDON COOPER, a former GM of WGN-TV in Chicago and longtime Tribune executive, also died Sunday, also at the age of 93. Sheldon spent eight years as GM for WGN before becoming President of Tribune Productions (later Tribune Entertainment). ROBERT FEDER looks back at his career.

Names in the News (and other items):

Dreaden

Dreaden

Veteran Cox Media news executive MIKE DREADEN is retiring after 45 years in our business. Mike kindly sent me this email which explains his retirement decision, his career background. He also pointed out that his retirement dinner was scheduled to coincide with a Cox news director and promotion manager meeting so they could participate as well.

Sadiwskyj

Sadiwskyj

LENA SADIWSKYJ joins WACH-TV in Columbia, SC, as its next Assistant News Director. She most recently had been the news director for WTVY-TV in Dothan, AL. In addition to Dothan, she’s been an ND in Knoxville, Orlando, Tucson, Shreveport, has worked in Dallas, Phoenix, Birmingham, as well as Toronto and Halifax in her native Canada. Lena also taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Laurent

Laurent

Finally, I spoke today with longtime Los Angeles area newsman LARRY LAURENT who asked for a favor, which I’m happy to provide. Larry was diagnosed with glioblastoma last May, a form of brain cancer. Recent complications have complicated his recovery and have left him unable to type, but we had a good telephone conversation. The favor? Larry’s worried that his friends might think he had ‘ghosted’ them. But his wife checks (and replies) to this email.

General Manager News and Notes:

Janene Drafs

Drafs

JANENE DRAFS heads south to LALA land (aka Los Angeles) as the next general manager for newly-acquired-by-Nexstar’s KTLA-TV. Since 2013, she’s been the GM for KOMO-TV and related properties in Seattle. Janene first joined KOMO in 1992 as a sales representative. More details in this news release.

January 19, 2020

Greetings:

Another busy week with FIVE newly named news directors. And, with NO new openings, that drops our list of open ND jobs to 29.

And that busy week also includes news of a new national prime time newscast to be launched by Nexstar via WGN America. Details on that below, too.

THREE paid help wanted ads, including an opportunity for a tenure track faculty position at the University of Kentucky. And the other two ads…in a sign of the times, perhaps…are for digital positions.

In Names in the News, we have an update on the soon-to-happen launch of the Black News Channel, an Orlando columnist wonders what will happen to a local station now operating under new ownership, and there’s ONE GM move to share.

Before you start obsessing over your picks for the “BIG GAME” (don’t wanna get sued by the NFL), read on!

He spent more than 20 years (in two different stints) at N12NJ, and also worked in Washington, Ft. Myers, and Jacksonville.

Longtime broadcaster PRINCELL HAIR is spending a few weeks helping the Black News Channel ready for its February debut. He left his job as Senior VP/GM of NBC Sports Boston at the end of the year. Princell and BNC’s VP/News and Programming, GARY WORDLAW, told me that Princell will help oversee training and rehearsals with the launch set for February 10th. More about the channel in this story from USA Today.

During our conversation Gary updated me on the condition of his son, GARY, JR. We told you two weeks ago that the younger Wordlaw was struck by a hit and run driver on December 30th in Tulsa and seriously injured. That included paralysis from the chest down. Dad told me that his son had surgery on his right leg last week and is set for an operation on the right leg once his infection improves.

The Orlando Sentinel’s HAL BOEDEKER speculates on what’s ahead for Cox’s WFTV (ABC) in Orlando, now that the sale to Apollo Global Management has closed.

MARTHA MYRICK moves up to Assistant ND at Tegna’s KTHV-TV in Little Rock, replacing SHAYLA TEATER (you learned above she was promoted to ND for that CBS affiliate.) Martha had been the EP of Special Content and previously worked in Orlando.

TAWNYA RUSH moves within Scripps to become the EP for KTVQ-TV in Billings, MT. She was working for KMGH-TV in Denver, has worked for another Denver station as well as in Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, and Casper, WY.

Gray Television wasted little time replacing RICK BLANGIARDI as GM of its Honolulu duopoly, KHNL-TV (NBC) and KGMB-TV (CBS). KATIE PICKMAN, who’s been the Director of Sales there since 2017, gets the job. She’s also worked in Rhode Island. We told you that Rick left earlier this year to run for mayor of Honolulu, but if you read this news release, you’ll see how he’s being honored at the station.

Wednesday, January 15, 2020 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A busy week for updates!

Nexstar LogoBig news from Nexstar today as the company announces it will launch a three hour prime time national newscast on its newly acquired WGN America. As you know, the company bought Tribune last fall and now owns WGN-TV in Chicago, and WGN America which is seen in 75 million homes.

Stasi

Stasi

Lyons

Lyons

The new newscast will be overseen by veteran WGN ND JENNIFER LYONS who’s been named VP/News for WGN America. She’ll be replaced as WGN-TV ND by DOMINICK STASI who’s been an EP at WGN for the past six years. He’s also worked at two other Chicago stations.

There are a lot more details in the company’s news release.

Who knows what the rest of the week will bring? Whatever it does, we’ll recap all this week’s news in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Tuesday, January 14, 2020 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A first time news director will face a big challenges as she ascends to the ‘big chair’.

Wolfe

Wolfe

NICOLE WOLFE, currently the assistant news director for Scripps’s WFTS-TV (ABC) in Tampa-St. Petersburg, has been named ND for the company’s WSFL-TV in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, where she’ll oversee a startup news operation there. The news came in this email from GM BILL SIEGEL.

Nicole has been at WFTS for just under a year, but has considerable experience in large markets. Her Linkedin page has her story.

We told you last month that Bill would be the GM for this CW affiliate. He spent the last four years as senior director of content strategy.

One other item: SHAYLA TEATER has been promoted to ND for Tegna’s KTHV-TV in Little Rock

More on both these stories in our full report this weekend.

Monday, January 13, 2020 UPDATE:

A new job for a veteran news executive.

Swenson

Swenson

HELEN SWENSON has been named Vice President, Content for Spectrum News NY1, the 24 hour cable news operation in New York. Details in this news release from the company this morning.

Helen most recently was an Executive Producer for TEGNA, working primarily on talk shows. She’s a former general manager (WIAT-TV in Birmingham), news director (KIRO-TV in Seattle and WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach), a consultant for Magid, and also worked in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Miami, and for the Weather Channel.

More in our full newsletter this weekend.

And…a slight correction to our obituary mention for former Indiana ND PHIL LENGYEL which we had in last night’s newsletter. He was ND for WSJV-TV which is in South Bend, IN, not Fort Wayne as I mistakenly told you last night. Apologies.

regards,

Greetings:

This edition of our newsletter may have more news than the last three or four combined.

There are THREE new news directors and TWO new ND openings, but both were created by people being promoted to new jobs inside their current companies.

That brings our always unofficial list of openings to 31, with ONE of those openings featured in a paid help wanted ad.

Speaking of ads, we welcome both Devlin Design Group AND Stephen Arnold Music back for 2020 as supporters of this effort. We also shared earlier that Stringr! is back for another year. We appreciate their support and I encourage you to check out their ads when you see them.

As I mentioned, lots of news in every section. TWO obituaries, one of a former group head and another for a former Indiana news director who went on to have a long career in marketing at Disney.

Some news managers on the move in our Names in the News section, and interesting other stories, including one about a consultant who uses neuroscience testing in his training. And several GM items including a promotion for a New Orleans GM.

All that and more below!

WednesdayJanuary 8, 2020 UPDATE:

Wordlaw

Wordlaw

We have good news from Scripps about TWO filled ND openings, but first a very sad item from longtime broadcaster GARY WORDLAW.

My son was struck by a hit and run driver while crossing a street in Tulsa on December 30th. He has been on life support since then. He has undergone multiple surgeries but unfortunately will be paralyzed from the chest down if he survives his critical injuries.

The outpouring of love and support by my extended family of broadcast and print journalist has been overwhelming. I have read to him the many comments on social media, emails and text that have come from many of you. While devastated by this turn of events, my wife Marjoire and my children and I are eternally grateful for all the prayers offered in behalf of my son Gary Junior and the family.

THANK YOU ALL!

If you’d like to send Gary a note, please email me and I will share his email address with you.  I am reluctant to post it on a public website.

In happier news, at San Diego’s KGTV (ABC), DORIS LEWIS has been promoted to news director. Details in this staff memo from GM LEON CLARK. Doris is a 20+ year veteran of the station, having joined as producer in 2000. She became executive producer in 2006 and assistant ND in 2015. Doris replaces ED CHAPUIS who was promoted to GM of sister-station KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo, CA, last month.

Fun fact. Doris has a law degree (from California Western School of Law) earned while working at the station.

The second new Scripps ND is also coming from within the company.

Lopez

Lopez

GERARDO LOPEZ has been named the ND for the company’s KJRH-TV (NBC) in Tulsa. Gerardo has been the assistant news director for Scripps’ KMGH-TV in Denver for just over a year. He’s been the interim ND at KJRH since SCOTT FITZGERALD left in November after less than a year as ND. Gerardo becomes the fourth ND in less than three years here. He’s worked in many major markets in news management jobs, as you’ll learn by checking out his Linkedin page.

Congratulations to both Doris and Gerardo.

Our full newsletter this weekend will be more robust than the last two!

Greetings:

It’s not quite as slow as last week but I expect more news to share with you next week as the new year gets underway.

We have NO news director moves to share with you, so our count of open ND jobs remains at 32. There is ONE paid help wanted ad for one those jobs which you can find below.

We do, however, have some new listings in our our News Management Openings section, a few items in Names in the News and our GM section, where we’ll tell you about a veteran GM who is leaving his job to run for Mayor of his city.

That’s all below, following this message from the Carole Kneeland Project.

Kneeland Logo

“Kneeland will exceed your expectations. Guaranteed.”

Start the New Year right.

Applications are due this (next) Friday for The Kneeland Project’s next session, which will be held March 4-7, 2020 in Austin, Texas.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for selected participants. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

You’ll join this session’s faculty and other outstanding news managers to explore the exciting challenges that face our industry, and you’ll leave the program with a solid plan to guide your leadership decisions starting day one. This isn’t theoretical information that you will put on a shelf and neglect. Every participant will walk away with concrete action items to implement immediately that will make a difference in their newsroom…and their life.

It’s an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results. Journalists return to their stations refreshed and ready to tackle the sometimes overwhelming challenges newsrooms now face.
