Sunday, June 30, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Due to travel, this week’s newsletter will be delayed.  I hope to have it posted by early afternoon (Eastern time) on Monday.

But there’s lots of movement in it, so it will be newsworthy.

Thanks for your understanding.

Greetings:

Regular readers know I always enjoy the IRE Conference, which was held this week in Anaheim. I don’t have a final attendance number but at last word it was close to 1,600 journalists from all over the world. And thanks to those broadcasters who recruited there: CBS, Scripps, Tegna, Nexstar, Gray, and Talent Dynamics.

Mark your calendar for next year’s conference in New Orleans, June 19-22.

On to our regular business.

TWO new NDs named this week, including ONE in the number ONE market. And just ONE new ND opening, leaving our count of open ND jobs at 42.

THREE GM changes, including TWO in Baton Rouge.

And changes in the executive ranks at Tegna and Gray, along with a salute to an out going Chicago GM and a big honor for a longtime Missouri ND and educator.

All that and more as you read on.

Newly Named News Directors:

Ashgar

WNYW/WWOR-TV, New York, NY…Friday’s UPDATE told you that EMAD ASHGAR would be the next news director for this FOX o-and-o. The FOX news release has more. Emad has been the Assistant ND here since 2011 and first joined 16 years ago as the EP for Good Day New York. He’ll replaces BYRON HARMON who left in April after about ten years as the ND.

Stocksdale

KMVT-TV, Twin Falls, ID…congratulations to ADAM STOCKSDALE who gets his first ND job at this Gray Television owned CBS affiliate. GM ERIC WALTERS shared this news in this email. Adam’s been the Assistant ND for Tegna’s KTHV-TV in Little Rock and has worked in Phoenix, Milwaukee, and Palm Springs, CA. He replaces JOE MARTIN who’s been pulling double duty as both ND and anchor.

New News Director Opening:

Waggoner

KSHB-TV, Kansas City, MO…MATT WAGGONER is leaving this Scripps owned NBC affiliate for job outside of TV. KSBH GM KATHLEEN CHOAL (who’s also a regional GM and will oversee the newsroom during the search) sent this memo out. Matt’s been the ND here since 2019 and added station manager duties last year. He’s also been an ND in Indianapolis. His Linkedin page has more.

Interview an expert:

Outdoor air quality and wildfire smoke

(U. of Wisconsin-Madison)

Thursday, June 27 (2-4 p.m. EDT) – Zoom

The U.S. wildfire season is getting longer and fires are getting more intense, exposing Americans to record-breaking amounts of wildfire-related smoke.

  • How to stay informed about local air quality—including what “AQI” means, and how it is determined;
  • Health effects of wildfire smoke and other air pollutants, and how to protect yourself and your family from unhealthy air;
  • Why wildfire smoke is worsening; and
  • Strategies to improve the nation’s air quality, including what is happening already, and what could be next.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Steib

Monday’s UPDATE told you about a change at Tegna. DAVE LOUGEE is retiring next month and will be replaced as CEO by MICHAEL STEIB. He is currently CEO of Artsy, which the news release describes as ‘the world’s largest online platform for discovering and collecting art.’ Before that he was the CEO of the parent company of The Knot, a wedding planning website. Earlier Steib’s spent ten years with NBC and Google developing ad supported businesses.

Zurik

Gray Television promoted THREE people to new roles, including LEE ZURIK who is now Senior VP/News Strategy and Innovation. Lee’s a busy fellow…he anchors at Gray’s WVUE-TV in New Orleans and also co-hosts the company’s weekday program, InvestigateTV+, in addition to serving as Gray’s VP of Investigations. Click here for more details on Lee’s new role…and the other two who were promoted.

Graves

Another week, another on-air tribute to a retiring news director. This time it’s JENNIFER GRAVES who’s leaving ABC’s WLS-TV in Chicago after a remarkable 23 years as ND and 32 years at the station. Here’s the link to the well-deserved on-air tribute. Jennnifer also worked in St. Louis at KSDK-TV and for KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO, where she graduated from the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism,

Woelfel

Speaking of Missouri, congratulations to longtime faculty member STACEY WOELFEL who is (deep breath!) the 2024 Edward L. Bliss Award winner for Distinguished Broadcast Journalism Education, awarded by AEJMC in early August at the conference in Philadelphia. He’s the longest serving ND at Missouri’s KOMU-TV and was the founding director of the school’s Murray Center for Documentary Journalism.

General Manager News and Notes:

Shenkan

TWO new General Managers are headed to Baton Rouge, LA.

And for one of them it’s a return as ANDREW SHENKAN is coming back to Manship’s WBRZ-TV (ABC). He’s a former sales executive there and is currently the GM for Scripps’ WLEX-TV in Lexington, KY. Andrew’s also served as a GM in Lafayette, LA. More details about his new job at WBRZ in this news release.

Ingram

Also taking a GM job in Baton Rouge this week was veteran manager TIM INGRAM. He’s joining Nexstar’s WGMB-TV (FOX) there as you’ll learn here. Tim most recently was a Senior VP for Gray following a long run as GM for WVUE-TV (FOX) in New Orleans. He’ll also oversee NBC affiliate WVLA-TV which Nexstar operates for White Knight Broadcasting.

Pylant

STAN PYLANT is retiring as general manager of Nexstar’s WHNT-TV (CBS) in Huntsville, AL. Stan’s been the GM there for 17 years and worked at WHNT for a total of 27. More details in his post on Facebook.

June 16, 2024

Friday, June 21, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Hello  from the annual IRE conference in Anaheim, which has been terrific. A few things have happened while I was here that I wanted to share in an UPDATE.

Ashgar

We’ll start in New York, where EMAD ASHGAR has been promoted to Vice President/News Director for Fox’s WNYW-WWOR-TV. He first joined the station 16 years ago as EP for Good Day New York, became Managing Editor and has been the Assistant News Director since 2011. More details on Emad in this release from the station. He replaces BYRON HARMON who left earlier this year after about ten years as ND.

While one job filled, another opened up today.

Waggoner

MATT WAGGONER, who’s been news director (and more recently, ND and Station Manager) at Scripps’ KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City, is leaving the station for an opportunity outside of television. Matt joined the station in 2019 as ND, coming from WTTV/WXIN-TV (CBS/Fox) in Indianapolis. He added station manager duties last year. More in this note from KSHB General Manager (and Regional VP) KATHLEEN CHOAL.

We’ll see you Sunday with a full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, June 17, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Big news today from Tegna, where DAVE LOUGEE will retire next month and be replaced by what some might call a non-traditional hire.

  Steib

MICHAEL STEIB will be the next President and CEO of Tegna beginning August 17. He is currently CEO of Artsy, which the news release describes as ‘the world’s largest online platform for discovering and collecting art.’ And before that he was the CEO of the parent company of The Knot, a wedding planning website. Here’s the full news release.

Earlier in Steib’s career, he spent ten years with NBC and Google developing ad supported businesses.

Many of you know Lougee, who came up the news side of broadcasting.

I’m sure you’ll see much more on this in the next few days.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** **** ****

Greetings:

It was nice to see a few of you this week in Milwaukee for RTDNA. I expect to see more of you this week in Anaheim for this year’s IRE conference.

A little action this week on the newsletter front: TWO new NDs and TWO new openings, with means 42 stations are still looking for news directors.

Our friends at Sciline have an interview opportunity tomorrow on an important topic: check out the ad below.

A change in oversight of Florida’s FOX owned stations which results in the retirement of a former photographer turned ND turned GM.

And some interesting tidbits in Names in the News.

See you in Anaheim, I hope!

Newly Named News Directors:

Oder

WTOC-TV, Savannah, GA…MICHAEL ODER transfers within Gray to this CBS affiliate. Here’s the memo from VP/GM MARSHA FOGARTY. Since early 2022, Michael’s been the ND at Gray’s KTTC-TV in Rochester, MN. He was the assistant ND for KBTX-TV in Bryan, TX, and reported in Birmingham. At WTOC, he replaces BARI SOASH who left in February after 5 1/2 years as ND here.

Gallardo

KGNS-TV, Laredo, TX…YOCELIN GALLARDO has been promoted to news director for this Gray Television owned NBC and ABC affiliate. She’s been the executive producer and evening anchor and has worked here for almost five years. She’s also worked in Bryan, TX and Fresno. Yocelin replaces JERRY GARZA who left the station (and television) in late December after more than six years here.

New News Director Openings:

KTTC-TV, Rochester, MN…you learned above that MICHAEL ODER is transferring from this Gray owned NBC affiliate to sister station WTOC-TV in Savannah, GA. Michael was here a little less than 18 months.

KREX-TV, Grand Junction, CO…TERRI CHAPPELL-PAXSON has left this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate after about 2 1/2 years as news director.

Interview an expert:

Rise of hospital-acquired infections

with Dr. Nasia Safdar (U. of Wisconsin-Madison)

Monday, June 17 (2-4 p.m. EDT) – Zoom

Rates of hospital-acquired infections (also called healthcare-associated infections) that are resistant to multiple antibiotics are significantly higher now than before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Book a 15-minute Zoom interview slot with Dr. Nasia Safdar to learn more. She can discuss:

  • Why infections, particularly antibiotic-resistant ones, can easily spread in hospitals and other healthcare settings;
  • The latest on C. auris, a deadly fungal infection that accounted for fewer than 500 cases nationwide in 2019 but nearly 2,400 in 2022;
  • Her research on how health systems can prevent the spread of infections using prebiotics or other tools to manipulate the gut microbiome; and
  • What patients or their families can do to reduce their odds of hospital infections.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

An attorney for former KTBS-TV (Shreveport, LA) anchor and news director BILL LUNN released a statement on his client’s behalf, vehemently denying that he had been involved in explicit online contact with a minor. The investigation was apparently done by private individuals, and two of them were arrested on charges of assaulting another man they believed to be a pedophile.

Two former news managers at Nexstar’s WOOD-TV (NBC) in Grand Rapids, MI, have filed a federal lawsuit against the company claiming defamation. News Director STANTON TANG and assistant ND AMY FOX were dismissed in 2022 after a memo to the staff about coverage of Pride events.

The union representing The Balitmore Sun’s journalists are unhappy with new owner DAVID SMITH who bought the paper earlier this year. Smith, of course also owns Sinclair Broadcasting. They say the paper is now reprinting stories from Sinclair’s WBFF-TV in Baltimore, and that those stories do not meet the Sun’s standards. The Washington Post has more.

Schecter

CBS News and Stations has created a new Crime and Public Safety unit and tabbed ANNA SCHECTER as senior coordinating producer. She’s spent the last 13 years at NBC News.

URIEL POSADO joins KHOU-TV (Tegna/CBS) as an Executive Producer. He had been working at ABC’s KTRK-TV in Houston.

General Manager News and Notes:

Maloney

Changes at FOX’s Florida owned stations. JEFF MALONEY, who’s run Fox’s WTVT-TV in Tampa since 2010, has been named Senior VP and Regional GM. He will now oversee Fox’s WOFL-TV in Orlando, replacing MIKE McCLAIN who announced his retirement the same day the change was made public. Mike began as a photographer in Birmingham, became ND there and later in Tampa and Atlanta and served as a GM in Charlotte before taking over WOFL five years ago.

June 9, 2024

Greetings:

A busy week with lots of changes to tell you about.

FOUR new news directors.

TWO new openings (one under unfortunate circumstances).

And that means 42 stations are looking for news directors.

We have TWO obituaries, one for a veteran ND turned GM turned corporate executive, and another for a marketing executive who worked for both CBS and NBC.

THREE stations are getting news GMs, the Murrow award winners are announced, and more tributes to NDs who are leaving their stations.

And you won’t want to miss a tribute not FOR a news director but BY a news director for an anchor with whom he used to work. Check out Names in the News.

By the way, the RTDNA convention starts later this week in Milwaukee. It’s my 44th consecutive convention…every one since 1979 except for two that were cancelled…in 2001 and 2020, for obvious reasons.

I hope to see you there.

Newly Named News Directors:

Mague

WRC-TV, Washington, DC…this NBC o-and-o promoted ANTHONY MAGUE to news director. He’s been the Managing Editor there. He will report to VP/News MIKE GOLDRICK who sent this note to the staff. In that note, you’ll learn that Anthony has had several jobs since moving to DC from Orlando, where he worked for six years at WESH-TV, Hearst’s NBC station there.

Philbrick

KUTV, Salt Lake City, UT…after six years as the Assistant News Director, IAN PHILBRICK has been promoted to news director for this Sinclair Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate. Ian’s had a number of jobs during his career: his Linkedin page tells the story. At KUTV, Ian replaces MIKE FRIEDRICH who left earlier this summer to become news director for WRAL-TV in Raleigh.

Villarreal

KWKT-TV, Waco, TX…SYLVIA VILLARREAL returns to Waco to be the next news director for this Nexstar owned FOX affiliate. She has been the special projects producer for the company’s Houston station, KIAH-TV. But she is the former ND for the Scripps station in Waco, KXXV-TV. At KWKT, she replaces DEAN WETHERBEE who just left the station a few weeks ago (Check out Names in the News below for more on Dean’s farewell).

KIFI-TV, Idaho Falls, ID…SETH RANDAL returns to this News Press & Gazette operation as ND. He was the first producer when the station debuted a morning newscast in 1996. Since then…well, I’ll let you read his lengthy Linkedin profile.

New News Director Openings:

Lunn

KTBS-TV, Shreveport, LA…BILL LUNN resigned this week during an ongoing investigation by Shreveport police into possible inappropriate communication with a juvenile. To its credit, the station reported the story here. And the local newspaper had this coverage. Lunn joined the station as its assistant news director in 2019 and was promoted to ND last year. He earlier spent nine years as a primary anchor for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis.

Tamez

KMID/KPEJ-TV, Midland/Odessa, TX…there’s a news director opening at this Nexstar operated duopoly. My records show that CARLOS TAMEZ has been the ND here for less than a year. Nexstar owns KMID (ABC) and provides services to Mission owned Fox affiliate KPEJ.

Interview an expert:

Climate change and American lobsters with Dr. Damian Brady (U. of Maine)

Thursday, June 13 (2-4 p.m. EDT) – Zoom

As climate change warms the ocean, American lobsters are moving to cooler waters. The center of lobstering—a half-billion-dollar-a-year industry—continues to move farther north, and to deeper water, than in the past.

Dr. Brady can discuss:

  • Why the Gulf of Maine is warming faster than the global average;
  • How the geographic range of lobsters has shifted in recent years, and how lobster boat captains have adapted;
  • Where researchers predict lobster populations will move to, in the near and long terms;
  • How population movements could affect the availability and/or price of lobster; and more.

WAYNE GODSEY, who worked as a news director, general manager, and corporate executive for a number of stations and groups, died last Sunday (June 2nd) at the age of 77. Complete details on a life well lived in this obituary.

JEFF KREINER, who held executive marketing positions at two networks, CBS and NBC, died in late May. He was in Las Vegas for a shoot for LMAO Productions for which he was the executive producer. Jeff also taught at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Learn more about Jeff’s life and career in this obituary.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

RTDNA finally finished releasing the winners of the annual Edward R. Murrow awards. The complete list is here.

Houston media blogger MIKE McGUFF details changes in the news management structure at Graham Media’s KPRC-TV (NBC).

We have several more farewell tributes to news directors who left their jobs at the end of May.

TIM RYAN left Tegna’s KUSA-TV in Denver after a long career spread over two stints. Maybe that’s why the station posted TWO pieces about his departure. We’ll call them Ryan #1 and Ryan #2!

We promised above more on DEAN WETHERBEE‘s farewell from Nexstar’s KWKT-TV in Waco Here’s what the station aired.

And this farewell is not ABOUT a news director but one done very well by a former news director, as MIKE RAUSCH put a lot of effort into this piece about DON ALHART who retired after 58 years anchoring at WHAM-TV (formerly WOKR-TV) in Rochester, NY.

General Manager News and Notes:

THREE new general managers were named this week.

Grisham

In Indianapolis, CHARLIE GRISHAM was tapped to run Scripps’ ABC affiliate, WRTV. Regional VP KATHLEEN CHOAL told the staff. He’s been the GM at WSIL-TV in Carterville, IL, for three years, and worked as a GSM in St. Louis and San Diego. He began his career as a weathercaster for several local stations. Charlie replaces LANA DURBAN-SCOTT who left in March after six years as GM and 31 with Scripps.

Heinrich

Another Charlie lands another GM job as CHARLIE HEINRICH has been promoted to general manager for Standard Media’s WLNE-TV (ABC) in Providence, RI. He’ll continue to serve as director of sales, a job he’s held since joining WLNE last year. He’s been a GM in Kansas City, Greenville, SC, and Ft. Myers, FL. More in the company news release.

Malloy

Tegna has promoted MICAH MALLOY to general manager of its two NBC stations in Maine, WCSH-TV in Portland and WLBZ-TV in Bangor. He’s been the director of sales for both stations since 2016 and served as local sales manager for three years before that. Micah replaces BRIAN CLIFFE who is retiring after 34 years in Maine broadcasting and 42 years in the business.

June 2, 2024

Greetings:

A little more activity even though it was a holiday shortened week.

TWO new news directors named, with ONE new opening.

No paid help wants ads this week, but our friends at Stephen Arnold Music AND Sciline are back. Please check out their ads…they help support this newsletter.

ONE new GM at a Gray station in Georgia.

TWO longtime NDs retired at the end of May. Both their stations aired stories to which we link below.

ONE Florida news director was the target of a texting scam. We’ll show you the story her station did to warn viewers.

A new head for Boston public TV station WGBH-TV, a reward for information about the disappearance of an Iowa anchor is doubled…at least for a while…and we have a look at what’s going on in Cincinnati television.

All that and more below!

Newly Named News Director:

Koumjian

WNYT-TV, Albany, NY…this Hubbard Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate has promoted JOSH KOUMJIAN to be its next news director. Josh began his career at WNYT as an associate producer, went to WXXA-TV in Albany as a producer, and then returned to WNYT as a producer, then EP, and finally Assistant ND before being promoted to ND this week. He replaces MICHAEL RAFFAELE who left in March to become ND for WHP-TV in Harrisburg, PA.

Burton

KXXV/KRHD-TV, Waco/Bryan, TX..JUSTIN BURTON has been named station manager/news director for these Scripps owned ABC stations. Here’s the memo from regional VP KATHLEEN CHOAL. It’s a return to Scripps for Justin, who earlier worked for the company in Kansas City and Bakersfield among other stops.

New News Director Opening:

Hendrix-Beach

KWES-TV, Midland, TX…this Tegna owned NBC affiliate is looking for a new news director. My records show that MELISSA HENDRIX-BEACH has held that job since September, 2018, when she was promoted from Assistant News Director.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

DAN LOTHIAN, a former CNN and NBC correspondent, has been named Editor in Chief for Boston public TV station WGBH-TV.

The end of May brought the end to the careers of TWO long time news directors, both remembered by their stations.

RICK GALL retired as ND for Capitol’s WRAL-TV (NBC) in Raleigh after almost 20 years as news director and almost 30 at the station, where he began as a reporter.

And AUDREY PRYWITCH left Nexstar’s KTVI/KPLR-TV in St. Louis (FOX/CW) after 23 years at the station and 16 as news director.

Best wishes to both for long and happy retirements.

Like too many Americans, WKMG-TV (Orlando) news director ALLISON McGINLEY was the target of a scam that saw many of her staff receive a fraudulent text message. The station aired this story to warn viewers.

Ridge

STEVE RIDGE, a private investigator perhaps best known to you as a longtime Magid consultant and executive, has increased the reward for information about the disappearance of a former Mason City, IA anchor, JODI HUISENTRUIT. She failed to show up to work at KIMT-TV almost 29 years ago. The reward is now $100,000: the offer expires on the anniversary of her disappearance, June 27th.

Finally, long time Cincinnati media reporter JOHN KIESEWETTER has a look at May rating results in the Queen City (including actual numbers). His latest column contrasts ratings from 2015: the numbers are not pretty. John also writes about a number of personnel moves.

General Manager News and Notes:

Gray has named GREG CONNOR as GM of its Augusta, GA, operations, WRDW/WAGT-TV (CBS/ABC). He’s most recently was GM for WACH-TV in Columbia, SC, and replaces MIKE OATES who is retiring after 33 years, the last seven as GM.
