News today from Memphis, where a veteran news director has left his job.
Jobe
KEN JOBE, who’s been the ND for WHBQ-TV for the last eleven years, left the station today, as did General Manager JOHN KOSKI. WHBQ was recently acquired by Cox Media as part of the station swap that saw Cox and Fox trade stations in Boston and Oakland/San Francisco.
Ken’s been a news director in Detroit, Cincinnati, and for another Memphis station. He’s also worked in New York and Nashville, as well as an EP for another Cincinnati station.

New News Director Opening:
WBIR-TV, Knoxville, TN…we told you earlier this week that CHRISTY MORENO is leaving this Gannett station for another, and will be the next ND for KUSA-TV in Denver. More on that below.

WDAZ-TV, Grand Forks, ND…JULIE MORAVCHIK is leaving this Forum Communications owned ABC affiliate after about 1 1/2 years as News Director. She tells me she wants to stay in the business and is interviewing for other news director jobs. Julie’s a former ND in Duluth. WDAZ is a sister station to WDAY-TV in Fargo and produces some of its own newscasts. TERRY DULLUM, who left the station in October after almost 40 years as an anchor/reporter there, posted this laudatory blog post.
Newly Named News Director:

KUSA-TV, Denver, CO…as noted above, CHRISTY MORENO has been named ND for this Gannett-owned NBC affiliate. She’s spent the last 2 1/2 year as ND for Gannett’s WBIR-TV in Knoxville. Christy is a former Assistant ND at KENS-TV in San Antonio and an EP for KRIV-TV in Houston, where she began as a producer. She’s also worked for a different Houston station and in Wichita Falls. At KUSA, she replaces PATTI DENNIS who’s been bumped up the Gannett food chain to VP of Talent Development. Patti’s been ND here for 18 years and will continue to be based in Denver.
KLDO-TV, Laredo, TX…ANGEL COVARRUBIAS, Jr. is the new news director for this this Entravision owned Univision affiliate. He replaces DIANA CASTILLO who left in June for a news director job in Sioux City, IA.

Obituary:
For those of you who missed our mid-week UPDATE, here are details about the passing of longtime WSAZ-TV (Charleston/Huntington, WV) News Director and Anchor BOS JOHNSON, who died a week ago at the age of 85. Bos was a past president of RTDNA, taught journalism at Marshall, and finished his career in public relations. Here’s a newer story from the Herald-Dispatch, while this is the only story I could find on the WSAZ website. He’s survived by his wife Dotty, and five children, including a son who anchors at WSAZ.

KDNL-TV, the Sinclair-owned ABC affiliate in St. Louis, will launch what it calls a non-traditional newscast in January. The station has not produced a newscast since 2001, though it did air a news program produced by KSDK-TV from 2011 until late last year. More in this article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
TALIA NAQUIN moves from WKRN-TV in Nashville to WSMV-TV, Meredith’s NBC affiliate there, as Dayside Executive Producer. Talia’s a one-time News Director in Wichita Falls, TX, and has also worked in Jacksonville, FL, and Fort Lauderdale.
