December 3, 2009 UPDATE:

JONATHAN MITCHELL has been named Vice President of News for KNTV, the Comcast/NBC o-and-o in the San Jose/San Francisco market. Jonathan has been the ND for KHQ-TV in Spokane for the last four years, and spent two years as the ND for WNWO-TV before that. He’s also worked in Cincinnati and Medford, OR. He replaces SUSAN SULLIVAN who left the station in September to return home as ND for WNBC-TV in New York.

Welcome to a slightly delayed Thanksgiving edition of your weekly newsletter covering news director and news manager moves.

As you might expect from a holiday week, it’s pretty slow, but we do have some items for you.

There are TWO new news directors to tell you about, and one of those new NDs created the ONE new opening to tell you about. That means we show 25 stations looking for a new ND.

Also this week, we have THREE ads for you. (Patronize our advertisers!)

There’s a new EP opening in a top five market, and for the second consecutive week, no items for Names in the News.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WPTV, West Palm Beach, FL…PETER ROGHAAR is leaving this Scripps/NBC affiliate to move across the state to be the ND for WTSP-TV in Tampa. More on that move below. Peter’s been the ND here since 2000.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WTSP-TV, Tampa, FL…as mentioned above, PETER ROGHAAR has been named Director of News and Information for this Gannett-owned CBS affiliate. In addition to his 9+ years as ND in West Palm Beach, Peter’s also worked in Austin, TX, Boston, Miami, and Atlanta, where he was the Assistant ND for Gannett’s WXIA-TV before moving to West Palm Beach. At WTSP, he replaces longtime Gannett employee DARREN RICHARDS, who resigned in October after 4 1/2 years as ND to work for a Tampa PR firm.

KALB/NALB-TV, (yes, you read that right) Alexandria, LA…KEITH WEISS will be the next ND for this Hoak Media owned NBC/CBS duopoly. (KALB/NBC airs on digital channel 5.1, NALB/CBS airs on 5.2, and both are available over the air and on cable.) Keith most recently was EP and News Planning Manager for KXAS-TV in Ft. Worth/Dallas. He’s also worked in Augusta, Ga. He replaces MICHELLE GODDARD who was promoted to GM in September after almost nine years as ND.

DIRECTOR OF CONTENT, KPTV/KPDX, PORTLAND, OR

Position Summary:

Oversee daily news operations including content choices, story selection, and crew assignments. This position will oversee photographers, reporters, the assignment desk, and Special Projects. This position will also do newsroom scheduling and provide coaching for on air performance and on air quality.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Manage daily news operations and content
Manage and coach reporters, photographers, and assignment editors
Scheduling
Other duties as assigned
Make presentations upon understanding client needs using Powerpoint, positioning the benefits of working with us, closing the business.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications – All must be met to be considered.

BA or BS in Communications, Journalism or related field. 3+ years Newscast producing experience. 3+ years News management experience.

Skills and Abilities:

Detailed knowledge of current events and issues.
Journalistic principles as they apply to daily news reporting and longer-term investigative reporting.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a number of people and projects on a variety of deadlines.
Interviewing, writing and producing skills.
Advanced Copy Editing skills.
Detailed knowledge or understanding of digital news gathering technology, including editing systems, web content, I.P. based video delivery systems, and other emerging technologies.
