A news director change in the Valley of the Sun tops today’s UPDATE.

KPNX-TV (Phoenix/Tegna/NBC0 ND GEORGE DAVILAS sent a note to staff last Friday saying he was leaving. I’ve reached out to him twice via email without response. His Twitter account (@davilas12news) has been deleted and his Linkedin page lists only the KPNX ND job, but does show a master’s degree AND a law degree from Syracuse. Here’s a link to his KPNX bio page (for as long as it exists). We’ll let you know if/when we get more details.
He’s been the news director at KPNX since June, 2016.

Friday, the stock market went down over three precent.
This week, our list of open ND jobs dropped by 8.7%.
I do not know why I compare the two. But after 26 years of 52 newsletters a year (you do the math), it’s hard to find a new angle.
But that means there are only 21 open ND jobs on our list, a number which was well over 40 not that long ago. TWO of those jobs are featured in Paid Help Wanted ads below.
Read on to learn more about the THREE new NDs named this week, one a veteran and two getting their first ND jobs. And…as far as I know…NO new openings this week.
We also have the obituary of a former Arizona ND who also worked in Washington and Milwaukee, and for CBS.

KTVX/KUCW-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…Wednesday’s UPDATE told you that NANCY BAUER was joining this Nexstar owned ABC/CW affiliate. Here’s the email from GM MARK DANIELSON. Nancy most recently was ND for KTNV in Las Vegas, has been an ND for two o-and-o’s in Los Angeles and one in San Diego, as well as in Bakersfield and for a LA County cable operation. She replaces TODD REED who went to KGTV in San Diego but left after four months.

WPTA/WISE-TV, Ft. Wayne, IN…TOM POWELL has been promoted to ND at this Gray owned ABC/NBC/CW operation. He’s been the assistant ND (and an anchor). Learn more about Tom and his background here. He’s also worked in Memphis and Sioux Falls and replaces JONATHAN SHELLEY who left the station(s) last month after six years as news director.

WSMY-TV, Lansing, MI…MATT JARCHOW moves within Scripps to become news director for this FOX affiliate. He’s been the Assistant ND for WGBA-TV in Green Bay for the last nine months. He started there as an MMJ in 2017, rose to EP, then AND. He’s also worked for two Spectrum operations in update New York. Matt replaces JESSIE WILLIAMS who was promoted to ND for KTNV in Las Vegas.

Sorry to report the passing of one-time news director and long time newsman MARK HANNER. This obituary says he died in March though it was only posted yesterday. He was 60 and died of pancreatic cancer. Mark was a news director in Yuma, AZ, worked for CBS and in Washington and Milwaukee, as you’ll learn in the detailed obituary linked above.
