Wednesday, September 13, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another day, another new VP/News Director for a CBS o-and-o. And this time he doesn’t have to share the job with someone else!

Nemitz

BRIAN NEMITZ returns to the Upper Midwest as he’s been named VP/ND for CBS’s WCCO-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul. You’ll learn in this news release that Brian is from Western Wisconsin and watched WCCO growing up. He’s been the ND for Sinclair’s WLOS-TV (ABC) in Asheville, NC, since 2018 and had been the Assistant ND there for the previous three years. He’s also worked in Miami, Pensacola, FL, Grand Rapids, MI, and Eau Claire, WI.

At WCCO, Brian replaces KARI PATEY who moved to a newly created job as VP/Producer Development for the CBS owned stations. She’ll move to that new role (announced back in May) when Brian gets to the Twin Cities.

There’s still one more CBS owned station with an ND opening (WFOR-TV) in Miami. Will they fill that job tomorrow, making it THREE consecutive days with such an announcement?

I doubt it, but as too many bad reporters have said “Only time will tell.”

If not, we’ll be back Sunday.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, September 12, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran Los Angeles news executive returns to LA as one of TWO VP/News Directors for a network owned operation.

Goldberg

MATT GOLDBERG joins KCBS/KCAL-TV as VP/News Director, joining MIKE DELLO STRITTO as one of TWO managers with that title. This news release explains the division of duties between the two.

Matt’s spent the last 20 years with NBC, including stints at KNTV in San Francisco and KNBC-TV in Los Angeles where he was the Assistant ND.

Before going to NBC, Matt spent two years as an investigative producer with KCBS/KCAL. He also served two years as board president for Investigative Reporters and Editors.

Barring any more UPDATES, we’ll be back Sunday with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, September 11, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a news director change in a top 21 market today and we have the details.

Stevens

JASON STEVENS has been promoted to news director for Gray Television’s WBTV (CBS) in Charlotte. Details in this news release from the station, which includes his detailed career history. Jason’s been the Assistant News Director there since 2022.

He replaces MOLLY KELLEHER, who’s been ND here since January 2022 and is a nine year veteran of the station.

Kelleher

Molly is leaving to become the Assistant ND for Gray sister station KCTV (also CBS) in Kansas City. I asked her about what some might consider an unusual move, and here’s her reply:

It is incredibly motivating to hear about the direction GM Curtis Miles and News Director Josh Morgan are taking KCTV. Gray is building something exciting at KCTV with really great people and I’m excited to be a part of it. It is time to use all I have learned in my 9-year run at WBTV and go do great things for the next Gray station.

Also, I need to correct two items from last night’s full newsletter.

PATRICK PAOLINI took a new job as EVP of Ad Sales for Fox Television Sales. He did NOT retire, as I erroneously told you in reporting the appointment of his replacement as GM of Fox’s WTTG-TV in Washington, SUE DIVINEY.

And apologies to CARRIE HOFMANN, the former ND at Tegna’s WCNC-TV in Charlotte who’s off to be GM for WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC. I managed to spell Carrie’s last name THREE different ways in the emailed version of the newsletter (but as one reader pointed out, that’s a .333 average which would likely get me into the baseball Hall of Fame.)

I aspire to be better than that, though, and apologies to Carrie, Patrick, and to you.

We’ll see if we can do better next weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

For a holiday week, a fair amount of activity!

TWO new ND openings, one at a top ten network o-and-o, the other created by one of our favorite things, an ND leaving to take a GM job. And we have TWO ND jobs filled.

With those changes, our list of open ND jobs remains at 36, with ONE of those stations advertising its opening in our Paid Help Wanted ad section below.

In addition to that ND becoming a GM, another GM job was filled in a top ten market o-and-o.

In Names in the News, changes at the top of NPR and Univision News, am anchor crosses the street in Portland (OR) to take a news management job and there a number of other moves to share.

Barring a mid-week UPDATE, we’ll see you next weekend!

Newly Named News Directors:

WBND-TV, South Bend, IN…this Weigel Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate has apparently filled its news director opening. GM AARON RAMEY confirmed the job had been filled and promised me a news release with details this week. We’ll share when we can.

Dugle

KIEM/KVIQ-TV, Eureka, CA…DAWN DUGLE will be the next news director for this Imagicomm owned operation. She replaces MARK FINNEGAN who left in June after less than a years as ND. Dawn’s a former ND in Arkansas who’s been out of the newsroom for a while as she’s been writing books described here as ‘spicy romantic comedies’. KIEM is an NBC affiliate with KVIQ is a low power CBS affiliate.

New News Director Openings:

Schiller

KRIV-TV, Houston, TX…multiple reports tell us that SUSAN SCHILLER parted ways this week with this FOX o-and-o. The first of those reports came from longtime Houston TV blogger MIKE McGUFF. I emailed Susan for confirmation but have not heard back. She’s been the ND here for seven years following a long career at CBS, including 15 years as ND for CBS’s KYW-TV in Philadelphia.

Hofmann

WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC…congrats to ND CARRIE HOFMANN who’s been promoted to general manager for sister Tegna station WLTX-TV (CBS) in Columbia, SC. She’s been ND for this NBC affiliate for more than three years following a six year run as ND for Scripps’ KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City. Carrie’s also worked in Denver, Milwaukee, and Phoenix, in addition to an earlier turn at WCNC.
