Tuesday, October 11, 2022 UPDATE:
Greetings:
Two large market items of note in this UPDATE.

Matthews
We’ll start in New York, where veteran newsman SCOTT MATTHEWS has been named VP and News Director for WABC-TV, the network’s owned station there. It’s a return to a local newsroom for Scott, who previously held ND jobs in New York (WNYW/WWOR-TV), Philadelphia (WTXF-TV) and Boston (WFXT-TV). (Bonus points to you if you knew that all were Fox o-and-o’s)
He left local news for jobs at CNN, CNBC, among others. Scott’s Linkedin page has the full story.
At WABC, he replaces REHAN ASLAM who died in July after a battle with brain cancer.

Carlston
Our other item crosses the country to Los Angeles, where longtime LA GM STEVE CARLSTON has been named GM for Fox’s KTTV/KCOP-TV. Steve spent eleven years as GM for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles before being shown the door last April. He’s also a former GM in Salt Lake City and was an executive with the UPN Network. More details in this story from TV NewsCheck. Steve replaces BILL LAMB who retired earlier this month after five years in the job.
We’ll see you Sunday with our full report.
regards,
Rick Gevers

Greetings:
It’s been a few weeks since we’ve had some ND openings, and this week we have FOUR with NO newly hired news directors.
That bumps our list of open ND jobs to 20, with ONE paid ND ad highlighting an opening at a legacy station in the Pacific Northwest.
There’s also a new ad for THREE faculty positions at the University of Kentucky.
Our friends at SciLine are back with an updated list of opportunities for you to set up interviews with experts on a variety of topics.
We have a link to the funeral for AL PRIMO, and an obituary for a three time ND who held big jobs at CBS and NPR.
And HANK PRICE is back with a column advising stations to start getting ready for an hour long prime time newscast which could radically change the local TV business.
All that and more below!

Newly Named News Director:
I am not aware of any new NDs this week, but I believe we’ll have at least one next week.
New News Director Openings:
After little movement, there are FOUR openings this week.

Strickland
KPRC-TV, Houston, TX…the biggest market move came at this Graham Media owned NBC affiliate. We told you in a Friday UPDATE that DAVE STRICKLAND was out, as explained in this short note from newly arrived GM PHIL LANE. New this edition: Local media observer MIKE McGUFF has more. Dave was here six years and earlier was an ND for 15 years at KTRK-TV in Houston and five years at WAVY-TV in Norfolk.

Wilhelm
KWCH-TV, Wichita, KS…KIM WILHELM is moving up within Gray Television as she’s been named Senior Executive News Trainer for the company. This email from JAMES FINCH, Director of News Services for Gray, explains her new role. Kim’s been ND at this CBS affiliate since 2017, She started there as a reporter, then became managing editor and investigative reporter, and was the assistant ND before moving up to ND.
WBUP/WBKP-TV, Marquette, MI…this ABC/CW affiliate is advertising for a new news director on its website. That same site lists LISA BOWERS as news director. I’ve emailed her, with no response as of this writing. If you’ve like me, you may not know much about the duopoly but the ‘about us’ page of that website will fill you in.

Standiford
KNOP-TV, North Platte, NE…another Gray station has an opening for a much different reason. This NBC affiliate parted ways with MELANIE STANDIFORD for collecting signatures on a petition to declare Curtis, NE, a ‘sanctuary city’ for the unborn, thus banning abortions there. The local newspaper has much more on the story. Melanie’s Linkedin page says she’s been ND there for 2 1/2 years and has worked there for five.
