Tuesday, October 11, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Two large market items of note in this UPDATE.

Matthews

Matthews

We’ll start in New York, where veteran newsman SCOTT MATTHEWS has been named VP and News Director for WABC-TV, the network’s owned station there. It’s a return to a local newsroom for Scott, who previously held ND jobs in New York (WNYW/WWOR-TV), Philadelphia (WTXF-TV) and Boston (WFXT-TV). (Bonus points to you if you knew that all were Fox o-and-o’s)

He left local news for jobs at CNN, CNBC, among others. Scott’s Linkedin page has the full story.

At WABC, he replaces REHAN ASLAM who died in July after a battle with brain cancer.

Carlston

Carlston

Our other item crosses the country to Los Angeles, where longtime LA GM STEVE CARLSTON has been named GM for Fox’s KTTV/KCOP-TV. Steve spent eleven years as GM for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles before being shown the door last April. He’s also a former GM in Salt Lake City and was an executive with the UPN Network. More details in this story from TV NewsCheck. Steve replaces BILL LAMB who retired earlier this month after five years in the job.

We’ll see you Sunday with our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve had some ND openings, and this week we have FOUR with NO newly hired news directors.

That bumps our list of open ND jobs to 20, with ONE paid ND ad highlighting an opening at a legacy station in the Pacific Northwest.

There’s also a new ad for THREE faculty positions at the University of Kentucky.

Our friends at SciLine are back with an updated list of opportunities for you to set up interviews with experts on a variety of topics.

We have a link to the funeral for AL PRIMO, and an obituary for a three time ND who held big jobs at CBS and NPR.

And HANK PRICE is back with a column advising stations to start getting ready for an hour long prime time newscast which could radically change the local TV business.

All that and more below!

New News Director Openings:

After little movement, there are FOUR openings this week.

Strickland

Strickland

KPRC-TV, Houston, TX…the biggest market move came at this Graham Media owned NBC affiliate. We told you in a Friday UPDATE that DAVE STRICKLAND was out, as explained in this short note from newly arrived GM PHIL LANE. New this edition: Local media observer MIKE McGUFF has more. Dave was here six years and earlier was an ND for 15 years at KTRK-TV in Houston and five years at WAVY-TV in Norfolk.

Wilhelm

Wilhelm

KWCH-TV, Wichita, KS…KIM WILHELM is moving up within Gray Television as she’s been named Senior Executive News Trainer for the company. This email from JAMES FINCH, Director of News Services for Gray, explains her new role. Kim’s been ND at this CBS affiliate since 2017, She started there as a reporter, then became managing editor and investigative reporter, and was the assistant ND before moving up to ND.

WBUP/WBKP-TV, Marquette, MI…this ABC/CW affiliate is advertising for a new news director on its website. That same site lists LISA BOWERS as news director. I’ve emailed her, with no response as of this writing. If you’ve like me, you may not know much about the duopoly but the ‘about us’ page of that website will fill you in.

Standiford

Standiford

KNOP-TV, North Platte, NE…another Gray station has an opening for a much different reason. This NBC affiliate parted ways with MELANIE STANDIFORD for collecting signatures on a petition to declare Curtis, NE, a ‘sanctuary city’ for the unborn, thus banning abortions there. The local newspaper has much more on the story. Melanie’s Linkedin page says she’s been ND there for 2 1/2 years and has worked there for five.

October 2, 2022

Greetings:

A two-time Houston news director is out after 20 years running newsrooms there.

Strickland

Strickland

DAVE STRICKLAND, who’s been the news director for Graham Media’s KPRC-TV (NBC) since 2017, has left the station. He also spent 15 years as the news director for KTRK-TV, the ABC owned station there. Dave worked at KTRK twice, first for ten years as a sports producer and managing editor. In between his stints there, he spent five years as ND for WAVY-TV (NBC) in Norfolk.

His departure comes just five weeks after PHIL LANE was named as the new GM at KPRC. Today, Lane sent this email to the staff.

This change brings to mind our oft repeated adage:

30 days hath September, April, and any sitting ND who gets a new GM.

We’ll see you Sunday with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Only ONE news director change this week, but lots of items in Names in the News, our obituary section, and the first GM change in THREE weeks.

The ONE ND change comes in San Diego, where an anchor moves from the desk to the ND office.

There are still 16 openings on our smaller-than-it’s-been-in-a-long-time list of openings, with ONE paid ad highlighting an opening at a legacy station in the Pacific Northwest.

Speaking of ads, our friends at SciLine are back with THREE opportunities for you to set up interviews with experts in a variety of topics.

We have much more on the death of AL PRIMO, a giant (as he often described others) of our industry. And we have news of the death of the wife of a longtime Atlanta and Miami news man.

There’s a new GM in San Antonio, and we have a series of quick items about current and former news managers.

We have other interesting stories, including a veteran GM and consultant who tries to answer the question: Is there too much local news?

And everyone complains about not being able to find producers, but we’ll tell you about one company’s interesting effort to develop more.

All that and more below!

Thursday, September 29, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Primo

      Al Primo

AL PRIMO, a legend of our industry, has died.

Al, who played huge roles in the development of both local and network news, died this afternoon after a battle with cancer. He was 87.

Perhaps most well known for having developed the Eyewitness News format, he also held top roles at ABC News, worked as a consultant, and developed the syndicated program Teen Kids News.

Al’s cousin is veteran newsman JOE ROVITTO, who sent me this note tonight with some background on Al’s career and their relationship And there is more on Al’s Wikipedia page.

Al’s wife ROSINA died in 2018. Our sympathy to their daughters, JULIET and VALERI, his cousin Joe. who provided information for this report, and to other family and his many friends.

There will be a lot of coverage in the trades over the next day or two. I’ll try and highlight the best of it in Sunday’s full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

At least for one week, my Colts tickets are of the market. (Colts 20, Kansas City 17). But they were VERY lucky. 🙂

There are TWO new news directors in this week’s report, with NO new openings.

Thus, our list shrinks to just 16 open ND jobs.

For the second consecutive week, no news about GM changes (that seems unusual).

There’s an obituary for a veteran ND who ran newsrooms in several major markets.

We have news about TWO former NDs, who have either a new job or a new honor.

And we have the link to Saturday’s Celebration of Life for longtime Missouri educator KENT COLLINS which was attended by many current or former network executives and correspondents, GMs, and, of course, family, friends and many former students.

All that and more as you read on.

WVVA-TV, Bluefield, WV…MATT IRVIN has been promoted to news director for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate. A 19 year employee of the station, he’s done a little bit of everything, from master control to satellite truck operator to drone supervisor to voice talent! He’s replacing WES ARMSTEAD who is retiring. Wes has been ND here since 2019 and has had a long and varied career.

Obituary:

Beardsley

Beardsley

MIKE BEARDSLEY, who had a long career in our business and was a news director in many large market newsrooms, died August 20 at the age of 71. This detailed obituary details his many ND stops as well as other career highlights, including a stint as a ‘Chair’ at Louisiana State University where he taught journalism and ethics. Mike also taught journalism internationally.

Names in the News:

Several hundred people gathered yesterday in Columbia, MO, for a Celebration of Life for the late Missouri journalism educator KENT COLLINS. Kent died at 74 in July after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. You can watch the service here, (it starts about 24 minutes in, preceded by a photo montage) and click here to see the printed program. Kent often referred to the Missouri Journalism School as the ‘Church’ of Journalism, and in his remarks Saturday, Dean DAVID KURPIUS said, “If that’s true, Kent was the Pope”. He impacted SO many lives.

Vann

Vann

LES VANN wrote to tell me about his new endeavor. Les stepped down from his last GM job in 2019 to concentrate on his battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Now he’s joining a marketing company as an organizational change consultant, as you’ll read here. Many of you know Les who was a longtime ND and anchor in Springfield, IL, and a GM in many stations. Friends can say hi via email.

Mitchell

Mitchell

One-time news director JAY MITCHELL continues to prove that there is life after the newsroom (as many of you already know). Jay left the newsroom (three of which he ran as a news director) in 2004 for a career as a realtor. Now he’s been named Virginia Realtor of the Year. Details here, and congrats to Jay. Your kind note to him can be sent here.

General Manager News and Notes:

For the second consecutive week, I’m not aware of any GM moves. Please let me know if I’ve missed something.

September 18, 2022

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a new management team coming to a Tegna owned NBC affiliate here in Indianapolis. And we have details about a live-stream for this Saturday’s Celebration of Live for longtime Missouri educator KENT COLLINS.

Hums

Hums

SCOTT HUMS, currently the interim news director for WTHR-TV, has been named Director of Content. He’s held the interim title since JEFF ROSETTI left the station in June after three years as news director and eleven years at the station. Before becoming interim ND, Scott was Director of Digital for the past seven years. He’d earlier held a similar role for WISH-TV in Indianapolis and at stations in Salt Lake City and South Bend. He began his career as a photographer.

Block

Block

But wait, there’s more! WTHR also named NICOLE BLOCK as its new news director. She’s currently the Assistant News Director for CBS’s KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, and has worked in a number of large markets as you’ll see by checking out her Linkedin profile.

Here’s the station’s news release with more details about both Scott and Nicole.

Collins

One more item. In Sunday’s report on the Celebration of Life for the late Missouri Journalism Professor KENT COLLINS, I neglected to share that the event will be live-streamed for those who can not attend. Here’s the link. It is scheduled to begin at 2:00 (Central time) this Saturday, September 24th.

If you can attend in person, please let the family know by clicking here.

Have a great week!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Anyone want to buy the rest of my Indianapolis Colts season tickets? (For non sports-fans, the team as gotten off to, shall we say, a VERY disappointing start.)

This will sound familiar as I wrote the very same words last week: Just ONE new opening, and we’ve removed THREE jobs from our list of open jobs for reasons I explain in the “Newly Named News Directors” section just below. (TWO of those are obvious: someone was hired.)

With those changes, our list drops to just 17 open ND jobs. ONE of those 19 jobs is our only Paid Help Wanted ad.

We do have an important UPDATE on details for the Celebration of Life for longtime Missouri Journalism Professor KENT COLLINS. The date and time are the same, but the location has moved (but not by much). That’s below.

THREE obituaries this week of people with widely dramatic backgrounds.

And as far as I know, NO GM changes this week.

And several items in Names in the News: some managers on the move and a longtime Indiana newsman on the mend.

Great to see some of you are RTDNA this week. Glad the weather cooperated!

Newly Named News Directors:

Keenan

Keenan

KTVT/KTXA-TV, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX…the first of our TWO UPDATES this week reported that SCOTT KEENAN is returning to this CBS o-and-o as VP/News Director. Scott was the Assistant AND here from 2004-2006. More recently, he’s been the Southwest Bureau Chief for CBS News in Dallas. Scott’s also worked in Chicago. He replaces LAURIE PASSMAN who’s moving to a new role as Director of Special Content after four years as ND and seven at the station.

Shelley

Shelley

WBRZ-TV, Baton Rouge, LA…and our SECOND UPDATE broke the news that JONATHAN SHELLEY is returning to Louisiana as ND for this Manship owned ABC affiliate. He’s a former ND for WDSU-TV (NBC) in New Orleans from 2007-09 and has been ND for WPTA/WISE-TV in Ft. Wayne, IN,. from then until last month. He’s replacing his new boss, TREY SCHMALTZ who’s been promoted to GM.

And I’ve removed WLTZ-TV in Columbus, GA, from the list of stations looking for a new news director. Thanks to the loyal reader who tipped that WTVM-TV now produces news for WLTZ. And has been since 2020. Oops!

Memorial Service Update:

Collins

Collins

A reminder that the Celebration of Life for longtime Univeristy of Missouri journalism professor KENT COLLINS is this Saturday, September 24, at 2:00pm.

The location, however, has changed.

It will now be held at the Bush Auditorium in Cornell Hall (home of the Business School) which is just south of the Alumni Center on the University Campus.

This map will help (you may need to rotate it) and also show a good parking option, the Turner Avenue parking garage.

The reception following the event will be held at one of Kent’s favorite places, The Heidelberg, across the street from the Journalism School at 410 S. 9th St., 65201.

There is a rooftop area which will be held for our group with beverages and appetizers provided. The Hitt St. Parking Garage directly behind The Heidelberg should also have a lot of space.

If you are coming, please click here and fill out the very simple form.

The weather is looking like it’s going to cooperate on Saturday, and the Collins family looks forward to celebrating with you!

Obituaries:

RICHARD STRADER, whose obituary says he spent 20 years as news director for WMAR-TV in Baltimore, died Wednesday at a Reston, VA, hospital. He was 86 years old. That same obituary says he spent 22 working for the Voice of America. He worked for many years at WMAR with a brother, DAVID, who predeceased him.

Fowler

Fowler

MAXINE FOWLER, mother of longtime news manager CAROL FOWLER, died September 8th at the age of 84. Carol, now Director of Content for Tegna’s KSDK-TV in St. Louis (and a three time Chicago ND), told me her mother sparked her interest in news. Carol posted this to Facebook, and you can find her mother’s obituary here. A kind note to Carol can be sent here.

TERICIA ANN (BANKS) GREGORY died at 88 back on August 21. Her obituary says she was the President and GM of the first black owned TV station in the U.S., Detroit’s WGPR-TV. That story, and her background, are quite interesting and covered in great detail in this lengthy obituary.

Names in the News:

At KGW-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Portland, OR, they’re getting a new Managing Editor. NINA MEHLHAF is moving from in front of the camera to behind the scenes. She posted this to LinkedIn.

And in Columbus, OH, RODNEY DUNIGAN becomes the Assistant ND for Sinclair’s WSYX/WTTE-TV (ABC/FOX). He’s a five year veteran of the station and has held a wide variety of jobs there.

Linn

Linn

Longtime Indiana Newsman TED LINN is on the mend from heart surgery last month to replace his mitral valve. Ted retired in 2020 after 16 years as ND for WANE-TV in Ft. Wayne and a long run as the assistant ND for sister station WISH-TV in Indianapolis. Ted will consider his recovery complete if he continues his consecutive streak of attending Indy 500’s next May. Wish (pun intended) him well here.

General Manager News and Notes:
