May 1, 2022

Greetings:

It was great to see a few of you at NAB in Las Vegas this past week, though attendance (I saw a figure of 52,000+) was far below the 92,000 of 2019.

Thanks to those who said hello.

Another slow week of ND changes, with just ONE new opening and ONE new vacancy, created by the retirement of a three time ND who’s been in his current role for more than 20 years.

So our list of ND openings remains at 33.

ONE new paid ad this week from a Florida station.

There is ONE obituary for a former Tulsa news director who is MUCH better known for the jobs he held after he left Oklahoma.

And some big news involving managers at CBS News, NEWSnet, and Estrella Media, as well as a new EP in Houston and a long list of winners in one of the oldest award competitions in the country.

April 24, 2022

April 29, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another news director turned general manager gets a big promotion…this time to a GM’s job in the second largest market.

Mokhtari

Mokhtari

TODD MOKHTARI returns to his native Los Angeles as President and General Manager for NBC’s KNBC/KVEA-TV (NBC-Telemundo.) Todd’s a former news director for KNBC who has been the general manager for NBC’s KNSD/KUAN-TV (also NBC-Telemundo) in San Diego for almost four years. He’s also been an ND for KIRO-TV (Cox/CBS) in Seattle and has worked in San Francisco/San Jose and Sacramento.

Here’s the news release from NBC.

At KNBC, he replaces STEVE CARLSTON and at KVEA he replaces CELIA CHAVEZ. We told you earlier this month that both were leaving and that their jobs would be combined into one.

Hopefully we’ll have more details in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s a pretty slow week on the ND front, with just ONE new opening…that created when an ND left his station to return to his former market.

That means our always unofficial list of ND openings remains at 33.

ONE ads this week from a Houston station.

There’s an obituary for a veteran CBS News employee. NO GM changes that I know of, and just TWO items in Names in the News. Sadly, one of those items is a correction…of a correction. Embarrassing!

If you’re at NAB, I hope our paths cross.

Newly Named News Director:

Blanton

Blanton

WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…BROOKS BLANTON starts May 31st, returning to West Michigan as the ND at this Tegna owned ABC affiliate. Brooks spent 7 1/2 years as ND for Grand Rapids’ FOX station, WXMI-TV (now Scripps) before leaving last year to be ND for Bahakel’s WCCB-TV in Charlotte. Brooks told me a change in his mom’s health brought him back. He replaces JULIE FLYNN who’s returned to sister Tegna station WKYC-TV (NBC) in Cleveland after three years here.

Brooks becomes the THIRD Grand Rapids ND to have been an ND for two different stations in the market.

DAN BOERS replaced Brooks at WXMI, crossing the street from Nexstar’s WOOD-TV.

STANTON TANG replaced Dan at WOOD. Earlier in his career he had been the ND at WZZM.

Only MATT JOHNSON at Sinclair’s WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo is a single station ND in the market.

SamFull-11-2-21

New News Director Opening:

WCCB-TV, Charlotte, NC…as we shared above, BROOKS BLANTON is leaving this Bahakel Communications after just not quite a year as ND. He’s returning to Grand Rapids, this time as ND for WZZM-TV (Tegna/ABC).

It’s pretty sad when you have to correct a correction, but in Thursday’s UPDATE correcting last week’s story on Peabody Award nominees, I transposed (as I often do) some call letters. Honored was KNTV (NBC owned) in San Francisco/San Jose, not KTNV-TV in Las Vegas. Apologies to the stations involved, and to you.

April 18, 2022

Thursday, April 21, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Well, THAT didn’t last long.

(And we have UPDATES on NAB events of interest and an important UPDATE to a story from last Sunday’s newsletter.)

CNN+ LogoWarner Bros. Discovery has pulled the plug, effective the end of April, on CNN’s new streaming service, CNN+. Here’s the CNN story on its demise, and here’s one from The Wall St. Journal.

This excerpt from the CNN story:

Hundreds of CNN+ staffers may lose their jobs. (Chris) Licht said in an internal memo that “all CNN+ employees will continue to be paid and receive benefits for the next 90 days to explore opportunities at CNN, CNN Digital and elsewhere in the Warner Bros. Discovery family.”

Staffers who aren’t absorbed elsewhere in the company will receive a minimum of six months of severance, he added.

Two other items:

My story in last Sunday’s newsletter gave you bad information about local stations winning Peabody Award nominations. Both KNTV (NBC owned) in San Jose/San Francisco, which received multiple nominations, and KNXV-TV (Scripps/ABC) in Phoenix were honored. Here’s the complete list which includes the nomination I earlier shared for KUSA-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Denver.

Apologies for the error.

And for those of you coming to Las Vegas for NAB, here are few items of note.

First, RTDNA is NOT organizing a gathering for news people as it has for the past few years. This explanation from Executive Director DAN SHELLEY:

We’re going to skip our usual meet-up this year. We’ve made a pretty heavy commitment to doing some stuff with BEA in Vegas next week. That, and given the fact that much of NAB will be different this year, prompted us to get the new lay of the land this year so we can put something bigger and better together next year.

Two of the advertisers that support this newsletter are exhibiting and would appreciate your visit. (At least stop by and tell them you saw it here!)

AccuWeather provided this information:

Our booth is N4506, we will be doing presentations at the top of every hour of our interactive touchscreen products, Weathershow Creator and StoryTeller+…

You can click here to set up an appointment with an AccuWeather representative.

And WMVision will also be at NAB:

Our booth number is N4725 and we are super excited to announce several new features at NAB, including enhanced workflows & security, as well as the new integration of Partner Camera Networks, with our first two partners being Vizzion and TrafficLand.

I will be at NAB and hope to see many of you there.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

FOUR new news directors this week, with NO new openings. So the list of open jobs gets a little shorter, with just 33 open ND jobs on our complete list below.

We have TWO Paid Help Wanted Ads, both for management positions at a top ten market station in Texas.

Just ONE new GM move this week…but it’s in Miami, a top 20 market.

And two big award competitions made announcements this week. Check out those items in our Names in the News department.

Have a great week.
