Thursday, July 28, 2016 UPDATE #2:

If there’s a second UPDATE in a day, that usually means a big market (or big name) is involved. And that’s true in the first of our two items this afternoon.

Rosenthal

Rosenthal

WFXT-TV (Boston) ND LEE ROSENTHAL is leaving the station today, a move he announced to the staff within the hour. He told me he’s going to be taking some time to considering his options. Lee’s been the news director for that Cox-owned FOX affiliate since October, 2014.

Lee first joined Cox in April, 2013, as ND for the company’s KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco, CA. When Cox flipped that station as a part of a deal that gave them WFXT, Lee made the move.

He also spent just over four years as an ND for WXIN-TV, the FOX affiliate here in Indianapolis. He’s also worked in Columbus, OH, Tampa, Knoxville, and Binghamton, NY as you’ll see here.

Redding

Redding

And we’re a day or two late in reporting the move of MIKE REDDING from one Tegna station to another. He’s leaving WCSH-TV/WLBZ-TV in Portland and Bangor, ME, to head to KVUE-TV in Austin, TX, where he’ll replace FRANK VOLPICELLA. Here’s the news release. You’ll learn that Mike began his career as a reporter and won many awards.

A busy day, and a bit of a busy week. We’ll recap it all for you in our full report later this week.

Thursday, July 28, 2016 UPDATE:

A veteran news director is on the move.

Kosowski

Kosowski

ED KOSOWSKI, who’s been the News Director for KCTV, the Meredith owned CBS affiliate in Kansas City, told his staff this morning that tomorrow will be his last day there.

Ed’s been the ND there for almost two years. He spent three years before that as ND for KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver. He’s He’s also been a news director in San Francisco and Boston, has worked in Miami and Washington, as well as for CNBC where he spent almost six years as an EP.

The full details are on his Linkedin page.

Ed told me he couldn’t announce his next move but will let me know when it is public.

We’ll have more on all this week’s changes in our full newsletter this weekend.

By the way, I hope to see many of you next week in Washington at the NABJ/NAHJ convention.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Parsons

Parsons

JIM PARSONS, who’s spent most of his career as an investigative reporter, has been promoted to news director for Hearst’s WTAE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh. He’s been the Assistant News Director there for more than three years but spent the previous 15 years as an investigative reporter at the station.

You can read the station’s online announcement of his promotion by clicking here.

Jim’s also worked as an investigative reporter in Indianapolis, and as a reporter in Buffalo and Rochester, NY.

He replaces JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI who was promoted to General Manager of sister Hearst stations WPTZ-TV/WNNE-TV in Plattsburgh, NY/Burlington, VT.

Greetings:

Another relatively slow week, with just ONE new ND opening and TWO ND jobs being filled. That leaves 28 stations looking for a new news director.

Just ONE Paid Help Wanted ad this week, and that’s for a medium market EP job in a beautiful place to live.

In Names in the News, RTDNA names its Paul White Award winner, a new job for a former ND and Chicago Assistant ND, and a management move in Albuquerque.

We have an obituary for a revered former faculty member at the University of Missouri, and a new General Manager in Chicago.

All that and more below.

WPTA/WISE-TV, Ft. Wayne, IN…after just one year on the job, ALAN WAGMEISTER will leave this newly acquired by Quincy duopoly next month. Here’s the note he sent the staff:

On August 31, 2016, I will be leaving WPTA. This was not an easy decision for myself or anyone involved. I know there will be many questions, but it is better if everyone stays focused on the future of the station. Quincy is making a huge investment in the WPTA stations and the future is very bright for the WPTA news team. This is a really great team, so continue to work hard and the finish line is in sight. Quincy has done and will continue to do great things for this station.

Obituary:

DAVE DUGAN, whose career included a stint as a CBS news correspondent and serving as the first general manager of the University of Missouri’s award winning NPR station, KBIA-FM, died yesterday. I believe he was 83. Dave collapsed in his daughter’s Kansas City home and could not be revived. After a 25 year career at CBS (in which he accompanied DAN RATHER on Rather’s first assignment), Dave moved to Missouri in 1972 to launch KBIA. In that role, and as an advisor to students, he shaped the lives and careers to dozens if not hundreds of students.

Funeral arrangements are pending. I’ll update my website when that information is available.

Tuesday, 7/26/16 UPDATE:

By his own request, there will be a graveside service for DAVE DUGAN on Monday, August 8th, at 11:00 AM at the St. Bonaventure Cemetery on Route 417/E. Main Street in Allegany, NY.

There will likely be a memorial service sometime this fall in Columbia. I will let you know when those plans are finalized.

JOHNNY CHANDLER has been promoted to Assistant News Director at KOB-TV in Albuquerque. He’s been the Managing Editor here. He returned to KOB in 2013 after a 10 year run as Assignment Manager at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque.

She also ran the news department at CLTV in Chicago. She’s all worked in New York and Washington.

We’re a week tardy in reporting the promotion of PAUL RENNIE to be GM for WGN-TV in Chicago. He’s been the GM for sister Tribune stations WTTV/WXIN-TV in Indianapolis for almost three years. During his tenure, with less than five months notice, he oversaw the conversion of CW affiliate WTTV into a CBS affiliate. More in this article.

Obituaries:

Sefert

Sefert

Funeral services will be held this Tuesday for JIM SEFERT, who served as President and CEO of Cosmos Broadcasting (later Liberty Corp., eventually sold to Raycom Media).  Jim died last Thursday at the age of 86 after a short illness.  Jim was president of Cosmos when I was the ND at its Toledo station, WTOL-TV, and he was always a gentleman.  More on his life and career here.

TOM DOAR, the one time head of the company that owned WCCO-TV in Minneapolis for many years, died June 20th at the age of 95.  Here’s an interesting article from the Star-Tribune about Doar’s role in the growth of that station.

Names in the News:

Slaughter

Slaughter

CHRIS SLAUGHTER, the assistant ND of Baton Rouge’s WAFB-TV, was one of several journalists arrested Saturday night while covering a protest related to the police shooting there. He was finally released Sunday afternoon. Here’s the link to the latest story, but this will be a ever-changing situation so you might want to check the station’s website for the latest. Chris is a former ND in New Orleans.

GERARDO LOPEZ returns to Texas as the Managing Editor for KXAS-TV. He’s been the Assignment Manager at KOMO-TV in Seattle, but has worked across the state of Texas as detailed on his Linkedin page.

Congratulations to ERIN NEWNAM who’s been promoted to morning EP at Seattle’s KIRO-TV. She had been the morning producer there and has also worked in Charlotte and High Point, NC.

ADRIANA AREVALO, a former News Director for KINC-TV, the Univision station in Las Vegas, has a new job in public relations. Media Moves has more on that.

DANIEL TROTTER joins WHAS-TV in Louisville as Digital and Social Content Director. He had been the Social Media Manager at WTSP-TV in Tampa.

Second generation broadcaster ALEX VAN AMEYDE joins WJCL-TV in Savannah as an Executive Producer. He’s been producing for WPTV in West Palm Beach and earlier worked on the assignment desk and produced at WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, MI, where his father LEE was a longtime primary anchor.

Best wishes to longtime Hearst Executive FRED YOUNG who celebrated his 75th birthday last week. Fred told me: “It’s back to the retirement work of volunteering, judging collegiate journalism awards and other industry related projects. That leaves plenty of time for the grandchildren and afternoon naps.”

Congratulations to old friend GARY HANSON who’s the recipient of a big honor from AEJMC (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication). Gary, a longtime news director in Youngstown, OH, and past chair of RTNDA, has been named the winner of the Edward L. Bliss Award for Distinguished Broadcast Journalism. Gary (and his wife LuETT) both retired last month after 19 years at Kent State. He’s battling cancer but says he’s still fighting. Friends can congratulate him and wish him well via an email to: glhanson@kent.edu

And congratulations to longtime newsletter sponsor Devlin Design Group which scored its third consultive ProMax/BDA Gold Award for set design. The new set for KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh (below) was honored. Here’s the news release.

July 4, 2016

Tuesday, July 5, 2016 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Two moves of note today, one involving a large market network owned station, the other involving a veteran news director who’s about to take (by my count) his 12th ND job.

Mitchell

Mitchell

JONATHAN MITCHELL has left KNTV, the NBC o-and-o in San Jose/San Francisco. He’s been the news director there for 6 1/2 years, and previously had been an ND in Spokane and Toledo. He’s also worked in Cincinnati and Medford, OR.

Boxx

Boxx

And PERRY BOXX is moving to a new job with Quincy Media. Perry’s currently the news director at Quincy’s WSJV-TV in Elkhart/South Bend but is moving to sister station WEEK-TV in Peoria. Quincy also operates WHOI-TV in Peoria, which is owned by Sinclair. He’s been the ND at WSJV for more than two years, and has also been an ND in Columbus, GA, Madison, WI, Charleston, SC, Savannah, Oklahoma City, Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids, Birmingham, Nashville, Corpus Christi, and Las Vegas, and has also worked in Little Rock and St. Louis.

We’ll have more in our full report later this week.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

I hope you had a pleasant holiday.

TWO new ND openings in this week’s delayed-by-the-holiday report, including ONE created by an ND being upped to a GM job, which we always like to see. And the ONE newly named ND is the result of a current ND being bumped to a corporate role, replacing a veteran newswoman who is retiring.

That means we now have 29 ND openings by our always unofficial count, ONE of which is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad below. We also have an ad for a competition to honor a great consumer finance report which includes a cash award and a trip to the EIJ Conference.

Also this week…a longtime Los Angeles news manager is retiring. There’s a new job for a former Arkansas news director, and we have an article looking at the difficulty in hiring news managers.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…congratulations to news director JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI who’s being promoted to General Manager of sister-Hearst stations WPTZ-TV/WNNE-TV in Plattsburgh, NY, and Burlington, VT. The local newspaper has more. Justin’s been the ND here since late 2012, and previously served as ND for Hearst’s WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC. He’s also worked in Houston, Milwaukee, Memphis, and Biloxi. Some of our more, uh, senior readers will remember Justin’s father, STEVE, who worked as an ND in Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Oklahoma City, and as a GM for two stations in Detroit.

WKEF/WRGT-TV, Dayton, OH…POLLY VAN DOREN is leaving this Sinclair owned ABC/FOX duopoly on July 8th. This memo from General Manager LISA BARHORST explains that Polly is going to look for opportunities closer to her native Missouri. Polly’s been the ND here for about 2 1/2 years. She spent about 1 1/2 years as an ND in Buffalo and almost 18 years as the ND for KOLR-TV in Springfield, MO. She also worked as an anchor and reporter in Evansville and Paducah.

Also, please note the new help wanted ad for the news director opening at KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs. We reported last week that JENE NELSON was leaving her job at that ABC affiliate.

Newly Named News Directors:

Reed

Reed

KWTV, Oklahoma City, OK…a series of changes at this family owned CBS affiliate to tell you about. Veteran newswoman JOYCE REED, who held the title of VP of Content is retiring. TODD SPESSARD has been promoted to replace Joyce, while NATHAN ELLIOTT is being promoted to fill Todd’s old position as Director of PM Content. This news release from the company explains the changes.

Spessard

Spessard

Joyce joined KWTV as ND in 1995, shortly before the Murrah Building bombing rocked the city. She was named VP/Content in 2009. Todd’s been the Director of PM Content (you and I might call that news director) since 2011 and previously was an ND in Tulsa, Wichita, and Columbia, MO. He’s also worked in Kearney, NE, Kansas City, and Grand Rapids, MI, where he worked for me when I was ND at WOOD-TV there. Nathan joined KWTV in 2004 and worked his way up to Managing Editor before this promotion.

Obituary:

Longtime ABC newsman RON DePAOLIS died in mid June. He went from radio to TV and worked for ABCDEF before it transitioned to ABC NewsOne. Here’s the memo from ABC’s AL PRIETO to the staff:

Names in the News:

KABC-TV in Los Angeles is losing 17 year veteran employee JULIE KRALLMAN. She’s leaving for a marketing job at her alma mater, Gonzaga University. Julie’s currently the Assistant ND for this ABC o-and-o, and has held a variety of other management positions, as detailed in the laudatory memo from ND ROB ELMORE. Julie’s also worked in Miami, Sacramento, and Spokane.

MARK RAINES, who spent 10 years as ND at KTHV-TV in Little Rock before leaving for a PR job in 2007, moves up the PR ladder. Details here.

Finally, do you think it’s harder to find news managers to fill openings? That’s the theory in this article from TV NewsCheck which looks at reasons behind that apparent trend.

General Manager News:

Congratulations to ADAM CHASE who’s been named GM of Scripps’ KERO-TV in Bakersfield, CA. He’s a 12 year veteran of the market who worked at KERO earlier in his career. Adam’s been the GSM for KGET-TV in Bakersfield for the last two years.
