April 2, 2016

Tuesday, April 5, 2016 UPDATE:

A veteran news director takes a buyout and ends a 15 1/2 year run at the same station.

Frank Volpicella

Volpicella

The news director is FRANK VOLPICELLA, the station is KVUE-TV in Austin, TX, and the buyout was offered by Tegna. Frank told me that he plans to keep working, saying “I already know what roses smell like. I still have the fire burning. So I’ll be working again.”

He’s also been a news director in Huntsville and Lexington, and has worked in Atlanta, Tampa, and Jacksonville, FL.

Frank’s last day at KVUE will be April 22nd.  The announcement of his resignation comes just two weeks after the only GM he’s had at KVUE, PATTI SMITH, announced her departure after a 17 year run at this ABC affiliate.

Monday, April 4, 2016 UPDATE:

A Chicago FOX o-and-o has hired a new news director.

Piacente

Piacente

MATT PIACENTE returns to Chicago as News Director for WFLD-TV.  He’s spent the last two years as the ND for WVIT-TV, the NBC o-and-o in Hartford, but has spent most of his career in Chicago.  Before moving to Connecticut, Matt spent about 15 years at NBC’s WMAQ-TV in Chicago.  He’s also worked for three other Chicago stations and in Columbia, MO.

Chicago media writer ROBERT FEDER has more on the move.

At WFLD, Matt replaces TOM DOERR.  We told you in February that Tom was leaving after four years as ND to return to Florida for family reasons.

Our full report later this week may be delayed by travel, but we’ll do our best to get it to you on time.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

We have a lot to tell you about this week.

THREE new news directors, and THREE new ND openings. Those changes inflate our list of open ND jobs to a higher-than-it’s-been 25 stations.

THREE of those open ND jobs are among the SIX paid help wanted ads in this week’s edition. (Check out the great looking ad for KOAT-TV‘s EP opening, by the way).

And we have ads from FOUR vendors who will be exhibiting at NAB. Please stop by their booths and told them we sent you.

Our TWO obituaries report the passing of two people who share a common background: they both worked at KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO. One never left, and one went on to the network.

In Names in the News, a handful of news management moves, including TWO at a Las Vegas station. And we’ll tell you about another CBS affiliation swap in North Carolina.

Obituary:

DICK FABIAN died March 19 at the age of 81. He’s a former news director for WEYI-TV in Clio, MI, but spent 20 years as an anchor and meteorologist for WNEM-TV in Saginaw. More here.

Names in the News:

Horvit

Horvit

MARK HORVIT is stepping down as executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (IRE). He’s been running the organization for more than eight years. But he’s not going far: he’s taking a new position with the University of Missouri School of Journalism which has hosted IRE for more than 40 years. Mark told me he’ll continue to work with IRE on several ongoing projects. More in this post from IRE President SARAH COHEN. Your note of congratulations to Mark can be sent to: mhorvit@ire.org

Univision has named CHRIS PENA as Senior VP of Local Media Television News. He’s been an EP at MSNBC. And the company named LOURDES TORRES as Senior VP of Political Coverage & Special Projects. More details in this press release.

I stumbled across two links of note that you might enjoy.

WCRA-AM in Effingham, IL, posted this interview with former WGN-TV (Chicago) and WLVI-TV (Boston) news director PAUL DAVIS. Paul’s mother served for more than 30 years as the ND here: naturally that’s how Paul got his start. (Never heard of Effingham? It’s where Interstates I-70 and I-57 cross: one of the convenience stores there offers T-shirts with the inscription “Welcome to Illinois, where our governors make our license plates!”)

And WTVC-TV in Chattanooga posted a 1976 air-check on its website. I found it noteworthy because the first block featured two reporters who would go on to become major market news directors, DON NORTH and GARY WORDLAW.

General Manager News:

After 17 years, PATTI SMITH is stepping down as General Manager of Austin’s KVUE-TV. She told the local newspaper in this story that she’s ready to hit the pause button, that it was the ‘end of a chapter’ but not the ‘end of the book’. She earlier served as GM for KVEO-TV in Brownsville.

March 20, 2016

Greetings:

Our list of open news director jobs edges slightly higher to 21 after a week that saw TWO news directors leave their job. We do have ONE new news director in a move that saw a Louisiana Assistant ND get bumped up to the top spot.

There are TWO paid help wanted ads in this week’s edition, both for news managers in medium market stations.

In Names in the News, a former ND gets a bump up the Raycom Media ladder. Two Nebraska News Directors are honored, and we’ll explain why it’s possible that RTDNA has run out of things to write about.

There’s an obituary for a long ago West Virginia News Director. And a former ND turned GM is named Louisiana’s Broadcaster of the year.

All this and more below!

Thursday, March 17, 2016 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

Well, that didn’t take long.

Earlier today we told you about JONATHAN SHELLEY’s departure from Hearst’s WDSU-TV after nine years as news director.

That was announced yesterday.

Franklin

Franklin

This morning the station announced that Assistant News Director AKILI FRANKLIN will move into the top job. Akili’s been at this NBC station for just three months, coming from another Hearst station, WVTM-TV in Birmingham where she served a year as an EP. She’s worked at several other Hearst stations, as you will learn here.

This is a homecoming for Akili…she’s a New Orleans native who began her career at WWL-TV.

You may now return to watching basketball.

Thursday, March 17, 2016 UPDATE:

When I said…at the end of Monday’s UPDATE…that it was shaping up to be a busy week…I was just guessing.

But we have news of another veteran news director leaving his post.

JONATHAN SHELLEY, who’s been the ND for Hearst’s WDSU-TV in New Orleans since 2007, is leaving that NBC affiliate. In this memo to the staff, he said that he and his wife had decided begin a new chapter in their lives. And here’s the note that GM JOEL VILMENAY sent to the station.

Before joining WDSU, Jonathan spent six years as the Assistant ND for another Hearst station, KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. He’s also worked in Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Ft. Myers.

We’ll see you at the end of the week with our full report. Until then, good luck with your NCAA brackets.
