Thursday, February 11th, 2016 UPDATE:

For the second time this week, one of the largest news director openings on our list has been filled. And this one is also at a Tegna station.

Carson

Carson

Congratulations to CHERYL CARSON who was promoted to ND today at Seattle’s KING-TV, the NBC affiliate. She’s been the interim ND since MARK GINTHER left for KXAS-TV in Dallas way back in August, 2015.

Cheryl’s been the Assistant ND here since December 2012. She also oversaw the station’s move into new facilities which is being completed this week.

Before moving to Seattle, she spent eleven years at KTTV in Los Angeles as a senior EP. Her first ND job was at WGHP-TV in Greensboro-High Point, NC, and she’s also worked in Las Vegas and Greenville, NC.

Her Linkedin page has her full resume.

This news comes just a few days after another large market Tegna ND job was filled. We told you on Monday that SALLY RAMIREZ will be the next ND at KHOU-TV in Houston.

We’ll have all the week’s news in our full newsletter over the weekend.

regards,

Monday, February 8th, 2016 UPDATE:

Greetings:

The largest market opening on our list of open news director jobs has been filled via an internal promotion within the company.

Ramirez

Ramirez

SALLY RAMIREZ has been named Executive News Director for Tegna’s KHOU-TV in Houston, the CBS affiliate there. She’s worked for sister-Tegna station KGW-TV in Portland, OR, for more than 17 years, first as EP and the last five as Assistant News Director. Sally’s also worked in Sacramento, Chicago, Washington, Tucson and El Paso.

Her husband RUSS LEWIS, who anchors the morning news at KGW, will follow her to Houston and join the on-air team later this summer.

Sally replaces PHIL BRUCE who is leaving the station after almost five years as ND. We told you in early December that Phil would leave KHOU at the end of January.

The news release from KHOU is here and the staff announcement from GM DJ WILSON is here.

Stay tuned!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Carr

Carr

A memorial service honoring FORREST CARR will be held later this month in Memphis. More in this Facebook post from his widow, DEBORAH CARR.  Forrest died earlier this week after a battle with cancer that he chronicled on his blog. Forrest was twice a news director in Tucson, as well as in Tampa, Ft. Myers, and Albuquerque. When he left the ND office, he wrote novels and hosted a radio talk show.

If you missed it, Poynter’s AL TOMPKINS offers this tribute to his friend and tells us of his contributions to journalism.

Situations Wanted:

We offer a free situations wanted ad to news managers who are looking for a new opportunity. If you’d like to state your case to a well targeted audience, email me an item (max. 150 words). You may include a link to a website, an email address, and a photo. You must include your name. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Names in the News…and other things:

Sorry to report that two different news operations are shutting down. The MundoMax station in Miami aired its last newscast in late January. And WYIN-TV in Northwest Indiana, operated by Lakeshore Public Media, broadcast its last program Friday night.

Congratulations to former WBIR-TV (Knoxville, TN) ND MARGIE NICHOLS who is retiring after almost eight years as vice chancellor for communications and marketing at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

One time news director (Winston-Salem and Ft. Wayne) KAREN FRANKOLA wrote this essay on being a mentor and the lessons she learned from an important figure in her life.

JOAN BARRETT will be the next GM for Tribune’s KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver. We told you of her appointment earlier this week. She’s spent the past 14 years as GM for KWCH-TV in Wichita but new owners Gray TV told her it wanted ‘new eyes’ at the station. Joan’s a former ND in Wichita and Phoenix, and spent time as a consultant. Here’s the news release from Tribune, and the Denver Post took a moment from its coverage of ‘The Big Game’ to provide this view.

Veteran General Manager ROBERT ROMINE returns to his very first station as GM of KXMB-TV in Bismarck, ND. His complete bio is here.

Updated with Al Tompkins story below (8:30 PM 2/3/16)

Carr

Forrest Carr

I am sorry to report that FORREST CARR died this morning.

Many of you knew Forrest, and many of you followed his battle with cancer on his blog. His last post there was less than two weeks ago.

His wife Deborah posted this on Facebook this morning:

It is with a very heavy heart, that I report that my dear, beloved Forrest Carr passed away early this morning after a valiant battle with cancer.

Forrest loved life, and, in many ways, had a larger-than-life personality. Even at the final moments, he was smiling and sharing his unique brand of humor.

I want to thank you, friends near and far, for your prayers and your kindness to Forrest and I these past difficult months. Forrest made many friends along his life’s journey, and I know he would want me to tell you how much he loved you all.

Peace be with you.

Forrest held news director jobs during his career in Tucson (twice), Tampa, Albuquerque and Ft. Myers. He also worked in San Antonio and Memphis. His full career path is on his Linkedin page here.

NEW:  Poynter’s AL TOMPKINS remembers Forrest in this story.

Forrest left KGUN-TV in Tucson three years ago to work as a novelist and had several books published. Forrest also hosted a radio talk show. He was living in Tucson when he died.

When arrangements are finalized, I will add them here.

regards,

Rick Gevers

A busy week of news director activity, with THREE new openings and ONE position filled.

Those changes bring our list of open ND jobs to 19.

Of interest (at least to me…I’m easily amused) in that there are THREE cities with TWO open ND positions: West Palm Beach, Huntsville, and Seattle…though the two openings there are both at Tegna’s co-located KING-TV and Northwest Cable News.

We have ads for FOUR of those open news director jobs…among our ELEVEN paid help wanted ads. And there are ads for people of almost every level of experience among the other ads.

As you read on, we’ll also tell you about the death of a legendary Mississippi newsman, some news management moves, a new GM at an Indiana TV station, and a new job for a longtime Indianapolis GM.

January 24, 2016

Greetings:

Just ONE new ND opening and ONE new ND in our report this week, but the biggest story may be in some of the ads we have. (By the way, our count of open ND jobs remains at 17.)

ONE of those open ND jobs is advertised in one of the SIX paid help wanted ads this week.

And there’s something for every experience level in our other ads. One is for a Senior Media Consultant at one of the largest consulting firms. And one is for another Director of Local Content Development at one of the largest TV station groups. And there are ads for news managers in a variety of market sizes.

There’s news about THREE general managers, one new, one ousted, and one retiring. Two of the three are former news directors.

And we have a handful of news managers on the move.

All that and more as you read on!

Bongiorno

Bongiorno

WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, OH…we told you on Tuesday that ALEX BONGIORNO will leave this Scripps/ABC affiliate at the end of the rating period. Here are the memos from both Alex and General Manager JEFF BROGAN. She’s been ND here since July, 2013, is a former ND in Pittsburgh and Spartanburg, and has also worked in Tampa, Las Vegas and Charleston, SC.

Longtime Cincinnati media watcher JOHN KIESEWETTER offers some perspective. The change means the longest tenured Cincinnati news director will be TIM GERAGHTY at WKRC-TV. He’s only been there since August. STEVE HYVONEN was hired by WXIX-TV in September, while JEFF BENSCOTER was named ND for WLWT-TV earlier this month.

And while it’s not a new opening, please note the paid ad below for the ND opportunity at KSBY-TV in San Luis Obisbo, CA.

January 17, 2016

Tuesday, January 19, 2016 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran news director will leave her post at the end of February.

Bongiorno

Bongiorno

ALEX BONGIORNO, who’s been the ND for Scripps’ WCPO-TV in Cincinnati since July, 2013, is stepping down. That’s the ABC affiliate.  Click here to read her memo to the newsroom, as well as GM JEFF BROGAN’s email to the station.

Alex is a former ND in Pittsburgh and Spartanburg, SC, and has also worked in Tampa, Las Vegas, and Charleston, SC.

This change means the “Dean” of Cincinnati news directors will be TIM GERAGHTY at WKRC-TV.  He’s been there since August.

STEVE HYVONEN was hired at WXIX-TV in September, while JEFF BENSCOTER was named ND for WLWT-TV two weeks ago today.

We’ll have more on this story…and all the rest of the latest news…in our full newsletter later this week.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wral LogoThe biggest news of the week did not involve a news director change but an affiliation swap in Raleigh, where WRAL-TV is moving to NBC at the end of February. Current NBC affiliate WNCN-TV will become the CBS affiliate. Our early report incorrectly characterized the move as CBS ‘dumping’ WRAL. GM STEVE HAMMEL tells me that’s NOT the case, saying that the Capitol Broadcasting Company station signed with NBC on Wednesday and notified CBS the next day. Here’s the local newspaper’s take on the change, while WRAL’s news release is here.

Moving to news director changes, there were several this week, with TWO stations hiring new NDs while TWO others are now looking.  Our count of openings remains at 17.

Sadly, we have an update from former ND FORREST CARR on his health, and it is not good. That’s below, in Names in the News. Also, a new Managing Editor in New York, a former three time ND is recovering from open heart surgery with an interesting tale about how his illness was discovered, and we’ll tell you what former news director a CNN anchor chose as the person who most impacted her life.

Finally, we’re delighted to welcome STEPHEN ARNOLD MUSIC as a new advertiser. Be sure to click on their debut ad below!

Sabato

WWSB-TV, Sarasota, FL…STEVE SABATO is transitioning to a new role for this Calkins media owned ABC affiliate, part of the Tampa market. This memo from GM JEFF BENNINGHOFF explains the new job and how it came about. Steve’s been ND here for about four years, and has held news director or general manager jobs in a variety of markets. Click here for his entire background.

Koutsky

Koutsky

WJZY/WMYT-TV, Charlotte, NC…we reported earlier this week that KAREN KOUTSKY has left this FOX o-and-o after just a year as ND. She’d spent the previous 14 years as ND for WGHP-TV in Greensboro-High Point, NC, which was a FOX owned station for part of her time there. (Our report earlier this week said that KAREN ADAMS…who was Koutsky’s GM at WGHP…was the GM at WJYZ. While Adams did hire Karen in Charlotte, she left for another position within Fox a few months later). Karen (Koutsky) has also worked in Atlanta, Toledo, Indianapolis, Wilmington, NC, and Raleigh-Durham.
