Wednesday, December 7, 2015 UPDATE:

Two significant developments to share with you today.

Phillip Bruce

Bruce

First, word from Houston that KHOU-TV News Director PHILLIP BRUCE will leave this Tegna owned station at the end of January. He’s worked for NPR, was ND for a PBS station in Los Angeles, and worked as a reporter and anchor for a variety of stations. More on his Linkedin page.

Frye

Frye

Second, after more than 38 years at Magid, BARBARA FRYE will retire at the end of the year (though she told me she despises that word). Barb’s current title is VP/Talent Placement Services and in that role she has touched hundreds, if not thousands of careers, of people in our industry. Barb’s always been a delight to work with, and, besides, is a huge Indy 500 fan! (I snapped this picture at the 2008 Indy 500.) You can send her a kind note via email to: barbarafrye600@gmail.com

It’s shaping up to be a busy week. We’ll have all the latest in our full newsletter this weekend.

Greetings:

We’re late but full of news, with details about FOUR newly named news directors and TWO new openings, both in Louisiana.

Those changes drop our count of open ND jobs to 18.

We have ads for THREE news management jobs, including one in Boston.

And lots of items in Names in the News, including information about a longtime Florida news director and anchor who’s in critical condition after an apparent stroke. And there’s a story about a California news director who spends some of his evenings at the ballet…as a performer.

We also have an obituary for a ground breaking CBS news manager.

Have a great week!

November 29, 2015

Greetings:

Befitting a short work week (for many, though I am sure not all!), this week’s report is short.

There’s just ONE new ND opening, but that was created by a move of a veteran ND to GM for a sister station (in this corner, we always like to see NDs becoming GMs).

And I’m not aware of any new NDs being hired, though that will change this week.

Our list of open ND jobs increases ever so slightly to 20.

We do have THREE paid help wanted ads below, and a new job for a former Louisiana news director in Names in the News.

Read on, and have a great week.

Devlin full 4-27-15

New News Director Openings:

Neelly

Neelly

WLWT-TV, Cincinnati, OH…MICHAEL NEELLY is leaving this Hearst owned NBC affiliate to return to Jackson, MS, as GM for Hearst’s WAPT-TV, the ABC affiliate there. Michael worked as a photographer and producer for WAPT in the early 90’s. He’s also an Ole Miss alum. He’s spent the last three years as the ND at WLWT, and 12 years before that as the ND for Hearst’s WLKY-TV in Louisville. He’s also worked in Ft. Myers and Portland, ME. At WAPT, he replaces longtime GM (and one time news director) STUART KELLOGG who is retiring. The local newspaper has more.

Newly Named News Director:

I’m not aware of any hires this week, but know of at least one that will be announced in the week ahead. And we’ll have that for you next issue.

November 22, 2015

Greetings:

Another slow week, with just ONE new news director named and, as far as I know, NO new openings.

That brings our count of open news director jobs to just 19.

We do have THREE paid help wanted ads for news management positions, and news of THREE new General Managers, including one who’s a former news director.

Take a moment (in Names in the News) to read the latest blog post by former news director FORREST CARR, who is remarkably open and candid about his battle with cancer.

That’s the only item in Names in the News this week, which means this might be a good time to solicit your news items.

We also have THREE obituaries as well.

All that’s below. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and we’ll see you next week.

A note of sympathy would reach John at jspain@braf.org

BOB WESLEY died a week ago (Sunday, November 15th) at the age of 84. He was the ND for WBIR-TV in Knoxville in the late 1950’s, and later became the long-time public affairs specialist for Union Carbide and other contractors at the government’s Oak Ridge facilities. TOM COFFEY, who served as an early news director for WSAV-TV in Savannah, also died last Sunday (November 15th) at the age of 92. He went from TV to serve as the editor for two Savannah newspapers. He’s described as an ‘old school news hawk’ and a community leader in this story.

General Manager News:

Silbermann

Silbermann

Congratulations to LARRY SILBERMANN who proves you can go home again as he’s been named General Manager for WTOC-TV in Savannah. He spent ten years as ND there before a promotion to Regional News Director for parent company Raycom Media six years ago. (To be honest, my calling it ‘going home again’ may be a stretch, since he was based in Savannah!) He’s also worked in Portland, OR, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Louisville. The station reported on his promotion here.

WEHT-TV (ABC) in Evansville has a new general manager. CURT MOLANDER will also be in charge of WTVW-TV, the CW affiliate in Evansville, via an outsourcing agreement with Mission Broadcasting. He had been a GM in Panama City, FL.

LINDA GUERRERO DEICLA has been promoted to General Manager for Sinclair’s KGBT-TV in Harlingen, TX. She had been the business manager there.
