Schiller

Schiller

SUSAN SCHILLER, who’s been the News Director for CBS’s KYW-TV in Philadelphia for 14 years, will leave the station in the next few weeks. A memo sent to the other CBS o-and-o news directors says she wants to ‘smell the roses’.

She’s spent almost 40 years working for CBS in a wide variety of roles, ranging from positions at several CBS o-and-o’s to jobs as a producer at the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. Her complete bio can be found here, posted when she was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame last year.

We’ll have more on this story…and all the week’s news…in our full newsletter over the weekend.

Rick Gevers

Thursday, May 7, 2015 UPDATE #2

Kalee Scolatti

Kalee Scolatti

KALEE SCOLATTI, the news director for KTMF/KWYB-TV, the ABC/FOX duopoly in Missoula, MT, was shot and killed last night in her home in Missoula. She was 34. Kalee appears to be one of the victims of a double murder and attempted suicide

Details are sketchy, but here’s an article (updated Thursday night May 7, 2015) from The Missoulian, the local newspaper, and here’s the story from her station’s website. I’m sure both sites will update their stories so I’d advise you to check back to those sites.

Kalee had been news director for six months. Her Linkedin page says she had been the News Production/Promotion Manager for more than nine years before her promotion to ND last December. Tomorrow would have marked her tenth anniversary at the station.

Our sympathy to her family, co-workers, and friends.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Thursday, May 7, 2015 UPDATE:

Rob Elmore

Breaking news from the number two market, where ROB ELMORE has been named News director for KABC-TV, which you know is the ABC o-and-o there. He’s spent the last 17 years as ND for another ABC o-and-o, WTVD-TV in Raleigh/Durham, NC.

Earlier, he’d been an ND and Assistant News Director for WHEC-TV in Rochester, NY, and also worked in Nashville and for another Rochester station. Here’s his linkedin page which tells the whole story.

At KABC, he replaces CHERYL FAIR who was promoted to be GM of the station last February after 20 years as news director.

We’ll have more on this in our full newsletter later this week.

And other one item…we now have this link to an obituary for longtime news director HARVEY COX. A memorial service is being held today for Harvey. We told last week that Harvey died suddenly last Saturday at the age of 70.

Monday, May 4, 2015 UPDATE:

As promised, we have an update on the passing of longtime news director HARVEY COX.  I’m told that Harvey died of an apparent heart attack Saturday afternoon while doing yard work at his home.  His son went outside to tell Harvey, an ardent fan, that the Mets game was about to start.  His son and wife performed CPR without success.

Harvey will be laid to rest on Thursday in Arkansas.  Final details are still being worked on, and I’ll post the here when they are finalized.  He is survived by his wife of 44 years and six children.

One addendum to the item below.  Harvey also worked as a news director for WCPX-TV (now WKMG-TV) in Orlando.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Just as we were finalizing this week’s newsletter, we were saddened to learn about the death of veteran news director HARVEY COX. We don’t have many details: the ones we do have are in our obituary section below. But I will update this page when I learn more.

Otherwise, just ONE new ND opening this week, with ONE new ND opening, leaving our count of open ND jobs at 27 stations.

TWO of those openings are featured in help wanted ads below, along with an ad for a new corporate news job at one of the largest broadcast companies.

We have several news managers on the move in our Names in the News section, and please be sure to check out the VERY unusual move by a Cleveland GM unhappy with his station’s landlord.

Cox

Cox

Longtime news director HARVEY COX died Saturday, May 2nd. Harvey most recently served more than ten years as ND for WMGM-TV in Atlantic City before new owners took the station in a different direction. Earlier he was a news director at KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, AR, and twice served as ND for WSPA-TV in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC. Here’s his Linkedin page. (Monday update.  Harvey also was an ND in Orlando for then WCPX-TV, now WKMG-TV).  I just heard from Harvey less than two weeks ago, when he alerted me to the passing of his former WMGM-TV General Manager, RON SMITH.

I’m hoping to get more details about Harvey’s death and arrangments…and will update this website when I do. Please check back during the week.

Names in the News…and other things:

KATIE HAMNER has been hired as the new Executive Producer for Gannett’s WFAA-TV in Dallas. She’s been the Senior Executive Producer for now-news-director-less KSTP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Katie’s also worked in Fargo.

Congratulations to MIKE CURTIS who’s been named Assistant News Director for Scripps’ KSHB-TV in Kansas City. He most recently was the Assistant ND for WHBQ-TV in Memphis, and has also worked in Philadelphia for WCAU-TV, for the New Jersey network, for another Memphis station, and as a reporter in Evansville and Greenville, MS.

At WBAY-TV in Green Bay, SARAH GRAY has been promoted to EP for this Media General owned ABC affiliate. She had been the 10:00 producer there.

General Manager News:

PAMELA BARBER moves from GSM to GM of Hearst’s Tampa independent, WMOR-TV. She replaces KENNETH LUCAS who’s retiring in June after 17 years as GM.

This story is not normally in our purview (there’s a $5 word you don’t see very often) but I couldn’t resist including it. Just what do you do when your TV station has mice? One Cleveland GM had, shall we say, an interesting tactic. Here’s the story.

Also, we accidentally omitted the latest regional Murrow Award winners in this week’s newsletter. Here’s the news release, which includes a link to the winners broken down by region.

Have a great week…and we’ll be back this weekend with our full list of news management changes.

Greetings:

27 stations, by our unofficial count, are looking for news directors after this week’s changes. Those include TWO new openings and TWO newly named news directors.

THREE of those openings are featured in paid ads below. And there’s an ad for a new corporate news executive position for a large broadcast company…all below.

The Peabody Awards were announced this week. Just one local, commercial station was honored (along with a DC bureau for a big group broadcaster). That information is below, along with some news about news managers, including the retirement of a former ND who’s spent almost 50 years with the same station.

All that…and more…as you read on.

New News Director Openings:

WBNS-TV, Columbus, OH…as we told you earlier this week, ELBERT TUCKER is leaving this Dispatch owned CBS affiliate to become ND for WISH-TV in Indianapolis. More on that below. Learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

WFXR/WWCW-TV, Roanoke, VA…this Nexstar owned FOX affiliate is expanding its news department and hiring its first ND. More details in the paid ad below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Tucker

Tucker

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…as noted above, ELBERT TUCKER will join this CW affiliate in June as its next news director. Elbert’s spent the last 14+ years as a news director in Ohio: the last five at WBNS-TV in Columbus, and more than nine years prior to that at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, where he worked with WISH-TV GM LES VANN. Elbert worked in management positions at WKRC for more than eight years before ascending to the ND job. He’s also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga. WISH posted this story on its website. Elbert’s memo to his staff…and WBNS GM JOHN CARDENAS’s note to the station, are here. He replaces STEVE BRAY who spent 2 1/2 of his 20 years at the station as ND.

Fulk

Fulk

WXII-TV, Winston-Salem, NC…22 year station employee LISA FULK has been promoted to News Director for this Hearst-owned NBC affiliate. She joined WXII in 1993 as a production assistant, later moved to the news department on the assignment desk. She later became a producer. Lisa became the Digital Executive Producer before being named Assistant ND in 2012. This story on the station’s website has more details. Lisa replaces BARRY KLAUS who left in March for a family business in New York after eleven years as ND.

By the way, we heard this week from LENA SADIWSKYJ. We told you last week that she was leaving WVLT-TV in Knoxville. Lena updated us that she’ll be at the station through the end of May, and promised to let me know when she can say what her next move is.

April 20, 2015

Tuesday, April 21, 2015 UPDATE:

A veteran news director rejoins his former general manager in a surprising move just announced…and a name change for the part of the company now called Gannett.

Tucker

Tucker

ELBERT TUCKER, the news director for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH, heads west on I-70 to become the next ND for WISH-TV here in Indianapolis. The move reunites Elbert with WISH General Manager LES VANN: they held the same jobs at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati.

Elbert leaves WBNS, the Dispatch owned CBS affiliate in Ohio’s capital city, and will now compete against Dispatch’s only other station, WTHR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Indiana’s capital.

WBNS GM JOHN CARDENAS‘ note to the staff, and Elbert’s note to his staff, are yours for the reading by clicking here.

He spent five years as ND at WBNS, and nine of his 18 years at WKRC as the ND there. He also had been the Assistant ND and EP for that ABC affiliate. Elbert’s also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga.

He’ll start at WISH after the May rating period and replaces STEVE BRAY who will leave the station after 2 1/2 years as ND and 20 at the station. Steve led the staff through a news expansion following the loss of the station’s CBS affiliation at the start of the year. WISH is now a CW affiliate.

Finally, when Gannett spins off its TV and digital business from the print side, it will have a new name. More here.

We’ll have more on this…and all the week’s news…in our full newsletter.

Greetings:

TWO new ND openings, and FOUR new news directors leave us with 27 stations looking for news directors. TWO of those openings are featured in one of our THREE paid help wanted ads.

TWO of the new NDs are in Knoxville. There are TWO stations (still) looking for NDs in Los Angeles. And TWO stations in Ft. Wayne are also looking for NDs.

Just thought that was interesting. You probably didn’t.

Sadly, we also have TWO obituaries of legendary broadcasters who may not be well known to newer journalists but both had big impacts on our business. And we have several items in Names in the News, including management hires in Miami Phoenix, and Austin, TX, and an honor for a longtime newsman who’s also had a big impact on TV news.

All that and more below.

Slatter

Slatter

BILL SLATTER died last Sunday (April 12th) in Washington, DC. He was 87. Many of you didn’t know Bill, but he had two very different careers. First as an anchor and reporter in New Orleans, where he once interviewed LEE HARVEY OSWALD a few months before the JFK assassination. He later became a talent scout for NBC. In the pre-videotape (and, obviously, pre-internet world) he travelled the country meeting with NBC news directors to ask about good talent in their market. More in this story.

Legendary photographer DARREL BARTON died Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 73. Darrel was twice named the Photographer of the Year and taught hundreds of photographers at NPPA seminars. That group honored him with this obituary.

Names in the News…and other things:

WTVJ-TV in Miami, the NBC owned station there, has promoted Senior Producer DAVID HENDERSON to EP of the 5 o’clock news. ELIZABETH FLORES, who was the 11:00 EP, was also promoted to Senior EP supervising the 6:00 and 11:00 news.

ANA MARIA LAMAS returns to Texas as the EP for KEYE-TV in Austin. She had been working as the Managing Editor for the Telemundo station in Los Angeles.

Finally, legendary newsman AL PRIMO was one of six broadcasters recognized Wednesday with a Ward L. Quaal Leadership Award. The honor is given by the Broadcasters Foundation of America and was presented at a Wednesday morning breakfast at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas during the NAB conference. I was honored to be one of Al’s guests at the event, and snapped the photo below. More details about the award…and the other honorees…in this news release.
