November 19, 2023
Greetings:
Happy Thanksgiving week!
A flurry of new NDs this week with just ONE opening. ONE of those new ND’s may be among the tallest NDs in the country!
With those changes, our list of stations with ND openings drops to 32.
TWO of those jobs are advertised below, among our FIVE paid help wanted ads this week: the other ads are for management jobs in Portland, OR, Des Moines, IA and Baton Rouge, LA.
We have TWO obituaries of people who left our business a number of years ago, and TWO items in Names in the News of people who are still very much IN our businnes.
If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving this week, hopefully you’ll enjoy good weather and safe travels. We’ll see you here next weekend.
SciLine briefing: Abandoned oil and gas wells
November 30th from 2-3 p.m. ET
Researchers estimate that there are between 2-3 million abandoned oil and gas wells in the United States, and more than 117,000 of those, across 27 states, are “orphaned”– that is, uncapped, unproductive, and with no responsible party identified to manage leakage or pollution risks. SciLine’s next media briefing will cover where these wells are, both onshore and off, and why it is so hard to find them; the types of greenhouse gas and other emissions they leak into the atmosphere; and the environmental and economic costs and benefits of finding and capping them. Three experts will make presentations, and then take questions on the record.
Panelists:
- Dr. Mary Kang, McGill University
- Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, University of Cincinnati
- Dr. Gregory Brian Upton Jr., Louisiana State University
- SciLine Director, Rick Weiss, will moderate the briefing.
Upcoming training from SciLine:
Upcoming expert-interview availability (Zoom):
SciLine, a philanthropically funded, free service for reporters, arranges 1-on-1, broadcast-quality interview opportunities with articulate scientists. Reporters can book 15 mins with them via Zoom or request a SciLine interview clip for your use. SciLine also runs a free expert matching service that connects reporters rapidly to scientist-sources on deadline.
Newly Named News Directors:
WATE-TV, Knoxville, TN…JEFF HOUSTON will be the next ND for this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. Here’s the staff note from GM KIM BYRD. Jeff’s been the ND for Sinclair’s WBMA-TV (ABC) in Birmingham for nine years and was the Assistant ND there for a year before that. He’s a former ND in Tupelo and has worked in several other markets. Jeff replaces ALLISON COE who left in July for a family related move to a sales position at Nexstar’s WJHL-TV in Tri-Cities, TN.
KETV, Omaha, NE…congratulations to SARAH KLINGER who’s been promoted to news director for this Hearst owned ABC affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND here for more than five years, as you’ll learn by checking out her station bio. Sarah’s also worked in Grand Rapids, MI, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. She replaces VONN JONES who is leaving for some new adventures after 28 years at the station, the last 5 1/2 as ND. He’s also worked in Milwaukee.
KTVH-TV, Helena, MT…we promised you last week that we’d share the nae of the new ND here when it was announced. It’s JESSICA NELSON who returns to the station: she’d been an anchor there before taking a job working for the state of Montana. If you read her station bio, you’ll learn she may be among the tallest news directors in America! She replaces ERIC JOCHIM who will remain at KTVH as an EP.
KIMA-TV, Yakima, WA…JOHN KENNEDY O’CONNOR is the new news director and anchor for this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. He’s been an anchor for KIEM-TV in Eureka, CA, but has a MOST interesting background.
Also, we’ve removed KAEF-TV in Eureka, CA, from our list of stations with ND openings. Sinclair gutted the news department there earlier this year and is now airing newscasts from a station in Redding, CA.
New News Director Openings:
WBMA-TV, Birmingham, AL..we told you above that JEFF HOUSTON is leaving this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate to become ND for Nexstar’s WATE-TV in Knoxville, TN. Jeff was ND here for more than nine years.
