May 12, 2014

Greetings:

It is, perhaps, fitting that in a week that ends with Mother’s Day, THREE veteran newswomen took big new jobs. They either landed one of the THREE new ND jobs, or created one of the THREE new openings, all THREE of those openings in top ten markets!

Our list of open ND jobs remains at 25.

We have a paid ad for ONE of those 25 jobs, one of THREE ads in this week’s report.

In Names in the News, RTDNA names a Paul White Award winner, a new Digital EP for a Washington, DC, station, and some other movement of news managers.

And our friends at Devlin Design Group have a new ad..click on it to see the set design that garnered them the Set of the Year Award for the third straight year.

All this week’s news begins below!

New News Director Openings:

Caputo

WGN-TV, Chicago, IL…GREG CAPUTO announced his retirement this week, effective in June. He’s been the ND for this Tribune owned CW affiliate since 2003. Greg has the Chicago hat trick: he also spent three years as ND for WBBM-TV and was the first ND for WFLD-TV when that Fox o-and-o began news in 1986. He also served as ND for Tribune’s Boston station, WLVI-TV, spent three years as Corporate Director of News for Malrite Communications, which owned stations in Cleveland and Cincinnati at the time. (Our email earlier this week incorrectly listed him as President of Maltrite.) Greg’s also worked in South Bend and Pittsburgh.

Roark

KTVT-TV, Dallas, TX…Congratulations to ADRIENNE ROARK, who’s trading her News Director hat for the General Manager’s job at KOIN-TV in Portland, OR. Adrienne’s been the ND for this CBS o-and-o for the past 4+ years. She’s also been an ND at another CBS o-and-o, WFOR-TV in Miami, and has worked in Orlando, New Orleans, Columbus (twice), Cleveland and for a second station in Miami. She’ll be busy when she gets to KOIN-TV: that LIN Media owned CBS affiliate has been without both a GM and ND for several months.  BRAD NEUHOFF left the station in February after 2+ years as ND.

Collura

KPRC-TV, Houston, TX…More congratulations to DEBORAH COLLURA, who’s also headed to the corner office as GM for WCNC-TV in Charlotte. Ironically, this Gannett owned NBC affiliate has also been without a GM and ND for several months. (CORRIE HARDING left the station for a job with NBC in New York earlier this year.) Deb is currently VP/News for Post-Newsweek in addition to her duties at the NBC affiliate. She first joined the company as ND of WDIV-TV in Detroit in 1997 and moved to Houston in 2011. Deb’s also been an ND in Miami and Minneapolis, and also worked in Sacramento, Albany, St. Louis, and Rockford, IL.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hundley

WTMJ-TV, Milwaukee, WI…JANET HUNDLEY returns to the ND office as she’ll head the news efforts for this Journal owned NBC affiliate. She’s spent the last twelve years as the Assistant News Director for WLS-TV, the ABC o-and-o in Chicago. (ROBERT FEDER has more.) Janet’s a 26 year veteran of the ABC stations, having previously served as ND for WTVG-TV in Toledo (when the company owned that station) and as a operations manager, producer, and photojournalist for WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham. She also worked as a bureau reporter for WRAL-TV in Raleigh. In Milwaukee, she replaces BILL BERRA who left earlier this year to return to Tampa as ND for WFLA-TV in Tampa.

Moreland

KWWL-TV, Waterloo, IA…veteran news director SHANE MORELAND has been named ND for this Quincy owned NBC affiliate. Shane most recently was GM of WVNS-TV in Bluefield/Beckley, WV. But his background is news: he spent the four years before that as ND for WCTI-TV in Greenville/New Bern/Washington, NC. He previously has been an ND in Norfolk and Roanoke, VA, and has also worked in Miami, Pittsburgh, and West Palm Beach. The move reunites him with GM JIM McKERNAN. They first met when McKernan was the interim GM at WCTI. Shane replaces DAN SCHILLINGER who returns to his native Wisconsin as ND for sister Quincy station WQOW-TV in Eau Claire.

Shultz

WNCT-TV, Greenville/New Bern, Washington, NC…STEPHANIE SHULTZ gets her first ND job at her second TV station. She’s currently the Executive Producer for sister Media General station WSLS-TV in Roanoke. Stephanie first joined WSLS as an associate producer during college ten years ago, and worked her way up to EP. At WNCT, she replaces INGRID JOHANNSEN who left the station in March after 16 months as ND for this CBS affiliate.

May 3, 2014

Friday, May 9, 2014 UPDATE:

Congratulations to another news director turned General Manager.

Roark

ADRIENNE ROARK, who’s been the ND of CBS o-and-o KTVT-TV in Dallas for the past 4+ years, is headed to Portland, OR, to become General Manager of Lin Media’s KOIN-TV there. The station has been without a GM and News Director for the past few months. Adrienne’s also been an ND at another CBS o-and-o, WFOR-TV in Miami. You can learn more about her background by clicking here.

Adrienne becomes the second large market Texas ND to head to a GM’s job at a station without a news director, following DEBORAH COLLURA, who, as you know from our UPDATE earlier this week, is headed to WCNC-TV in Charlotte.  And her departure now means TWO CBS o-and-o’s are looking for a new news departure.  WBZ-TV is the other, following JOHN VERRILLI’s departure earlier this year.

Our complete newsletter, which will be full of news, will likely be delivered later this weekend.

Another Monday, May 5, 2014 UPDATE!:

We don’t often offer you TWO updates in the same day, but I felt that this news warranted that.

Caputo

Longtime Chicago newsman GREG CAPUTO announced his retirement today, effective in June. He’s been the ND for WGN-TV in the Windy City since 2003. During his career, he also spent three years as ND for WBBM-TV and was the first ND for WFLD-TV when that Fox station began news in 1986. He also served as ND for Tribune’s Boston station, WLVI-TV, spent three years as Corporate Director of News for Malrite Communications, which owned stations in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Greg’s also worked in South Bend and Pittsburgh.

Learn more about his background in this item from longtime Chicago media reporter ROBERT FEDER.

Also today, longtime news director SHANE MORELAND was named ND of KWWL-TV in Waterloo, IA.

It’s already been a busy week…we’ll have a full newsletter at the end of the week,

Monday, May 5, 2014 UPDATE:

Collura

Today’s surprise comes from Charlotte, where longtime Post-Newsweek executive DEBORAH COLLURA has been named General Manager of Gannett’s WCNC-TV, the NBC affiliate there. Deb is currently VP/News for Post-Newsweek and Managing Director of News for the company’s Houston property, KPRC-TV. She first joined the company as ND of WDIV-TV in Detroit in 1997 and moved to Houston in 2011. Deb’s also been a News Director in Miami and Minneapolis. She’s also worked in Sacramento, Albany, St. Louis, and Rockford, IL.

Among her first tasks in Charlotte will be to find a news director. That job’s been open since CORRIE HARDING left in February to take a job with NBC in New York.

We’ll have all the week’s news in our full report this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

New News Director Openings:

WXTV, New York, NY…NORMA MORATO has left this Univision o-and-o after 13 years as news director. Media Moves has the details in this story. Norma started her career at WXTV more than 30 years ago. She left to become ND for WJNU-TV, the Telemundo station serving New York. She later worked at WCBS-TV, CNBC, 20/20, and Consumer Reports.

And while not a new opening, I’d like to call your attention to the opening at WOI-TV in Des Moines/Ames, IA, which is re-running its ad for the ND opening there. You can see that below.

His Mom still lives in that house, and Brian and his family also live on Thouvenot Lane.

April 26, 2014

Greetings:

This week’s report features TWO new News Directors and a veteran California ND announces plans to leave his station. That brings the count of open ND jobs to 26.

If you’re looking for a new opportunity, you’ve come to the right place. We have FIVE paid ads, including two in top six markets.

We have an obituary for a past president of CBS News. And in Names in the News, RTDNA names the Regional Murrow Award winners, Tribune Broadcasting gets a new Senior VP of News, and a former ND turned GM is on the mend from surgery…and he has an important message to share.

That and more, below!

New News Director Departure:

Baader

KMAX-TV, Sacramento, CA…21 years as a news director in a top 25 market! That’s the story for BRENT BAADER, who will leave this CBS owned CW affiliate in June, after the May ratings period. Brent’s primarily responsibility is the oversight of the very popular Good Day Sacramento program, which sometimes beats the Today Show. Brent tells me he has projects to work on, both in and out of the business. He kindly shared his note to the staff, which you can read by clicking here. A decision how to replace him at the CBS owned duopoly (KOVR-TV and KMAX-TV) will be made in the weeks ahead.

Newly Named News Directors:

WNWO-TV, Toledo, OH…in one of several management changes at this NBC affiliate, station owner Sinclair Broadcasting installed NICHOLE HAHN as news director. She’d been a producer at WPTA-TV in Ft. Wayne, and replaces JIM BLUE, who will continue to anchor for the station. Also making the move from WPTA to Toledo were a new GM, General Sales Manager, Digital Content Manager, and promotion director. More details in this story.

April 19, 2014

Greetings:

A busy week to share with you, with TWO  new ND openings and FIVE new news directors to introduce you to.  That brings the count of open ND jobs to a still robust 27.

We have paid ads for TWO of those openings, and a total of SEVEN ads altogether, including an EP opening in Chicago.

There are TWO obituaries this week, one for a Wisconsin broadcasting legend and the other for an Austin, TX, EP.

In Names in the News, a Utah news executive gets bumped up, the Society of Professional Journalists announce their awards, and a handful of news managers on the move.

And lots of GM movement this week.

And…if you’ve not seen it…you might enjoy this STEPHEN COLBERT parody of some of the networks’ morning shows’ attempts to reach millennials.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

Boling

KHQ-TV, Spokane, WA…congratulations to news director NEAL BOLING who’s been promoted to Station Manager here.  Neal joined this Cowles owned NBC affiliate as Executive News Director of Content and Promotion in January, 2010.  He had been the ND for WJHL-TV in Johnson City, TN, and previously worked as an EP in Tampa.  You can learn more about this opportunity in what I’ll just call one of the more ‘interesting’ paid ads we’ve had in a while.  That’s below.

Schillinger

KWWL-TV, Waterloo, IA…DAN SCHILLINGER is heading home…returning to his native Wisconsin as ND for sister Quincy station WQOW-TV in Eau Claire.  He’s been the ND for this NBC affiliate for 2 1/2 years.  Dan came to Waterloo from Augusta, GA, where he worked for four years.  He’d earlier spent five years as the ND for KCEN-TV in Waco, TX, was the ND and anchor for KEVN-TV in Rapid City, SD, and had been ND for a Minneapolis cable news channel.  More on his move in this article from the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.  You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hardy

WAAY-TV, Huntsville, AL…JENNIFER HARDY will be the next ND for this ABC affiliate which is owned by Calkins Media.  The move gets her closer to family.  She’s spent the last two years as ND for Gray’s KOLO-TV in Reno, NV.  Before that, she worked in Las Vegas (both KVVU-TV and KTNV), Spokane, Tulsa, Memphis, and Tucson, where she first met WAAY-TV General Manager PAUL DUGHI when he consulted the station.  Jennifer replaces KEITH LOWHORNE who left in August to take a non-TV job in Huntsville.  Keith was ND there for five years and worked at  WHNT-TV in Huntsville for thirty years.

Hice

KCEN-TV, Waco, TX…JIM HICE leaves his gig as the Assistant ND for WHAS-TV in Louisville to become the new ND for this London Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate.  It’s a return to Texas for Jim, who began his career in Lubbock.  He’s been the Deuce at WHAS for more than three years, spent four years in Tampa before that, and earlier had worked for another Louisville station.  Jim replaces veteran ND JIM HOLLAND who in January announced his plans to retire in May after five years as ND here.  He’s also been a news director in Syracuse, Dallas, and Fresno.  Jim Hice’s departure leaves WHAS without either an ND or an Assistant ND.

KFOX-TV, El Paso, TX…congratulations to SHAUNA ZIEGLER who’s been promoted to news director for this Sinclair owned (look at the call letters and guess the affiliation) station.  Shauna first joined the staff in 2003 as weekend assignment editor, and has been the morning producer, 9:00 producer, executive producer, and assistant news director.  She replaces LIZ O’HARA who left the station after more than six years as ND and close to 14 at the station.

WQOW-TV, Eau Claire, WI…as we told you above, DAN SCHILLINGER is returning to Wisconsin to be the next ND for this Quincy owned ABC affiliate.  More on that above.  Dan replaces LISA PATROW who left the station last week after four years as news director and 14 at the station.

Bell

WJHG-TV, Panama City, FL…another longtime station employee has been named ND, as DONNA BELL has been promoted to news director for this Gray Television owned NBC affiliate.  (We’re a bit late here, the announcement was made in February).  Donna’s worked here for 20 years, ever since her graduation from the University of Florida.  She’s been the morning and noon anchor for the past 13 years and gets to reset her alarm clock to more normal hours when she comes off the AM news after the May book.  Donna will continue to anchor the noon news.  She replaces JAMIE BURCH who left in October to be ND for another Gray station, KBTX-TV in Bryan, TX.

Names in the News:

The Society of Professional Journalists announced the 2013 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism this week. Here are the TV winners.

Vea

Congratulations to veteran Salt Lake City broadcaster TANYA VEA who’s been named Station Manager of KSL-TV, where she’s been the Executive Vice President of News and Cross-Platform Development since January, 2011.  (Tanya tells me she’ll hold both jobs for a while.)  She first joined KSL in 2010 as Director of Program Development.  Earlier in her career she was the ND for KUTV in Salt Lake City, where she worked for 14 years.  KSL does not have a general manager, so Tanya will report directly to DARREL BROWN, who’s President of parent company Bonneville.  Trivia:  Tanya is the niece of longtime ND JENNIFER RIGBY, who is now working at the Weather Channel.

A few management changes at New York’s WPIX-TV.  Former Philadelphia News Director CHUCK CARTER joins the station as Managing Editor.  He’s been the Assistant News Director at sister-Tribune station WTIC-TV in Hartford.  Chuck’s also worked in Houston and Jacksonville, FL.  Also at WPIX, AMY WALDMAN has been promoted to Senior Executive Producer.  Amy’s been the Managing Editor.  SHARON VAN ZWIETEN, who was the Senior EP, is moving into a news talent project management role.

KIM SAXON has been promoted to Assistant News Director at WBTV in Charlotte. She’s been the Executive Producer for this Raycom owned CBS affiliate.

KTUL-TV in Tulsa has a new executive producer, and they saved some money on moving expenses. AMY BRYANT joins this owned-by-Albritton-for-now ABC affiliate. She’s been a producer for cross-town rival KJRH-TV.

Five time News Director (Tucson (2), Tampa, Ft, Myers, Albuquerque) turned author FORREST CARR  is now blogging, in addition to his book writing.  Check his efforts out here:

JORGE METTEY resigned last week as Senior VP/News at the MundoFox Network after two years. He was the founding news director of the Spanish language network.

General Manager News:

A flurry of General Manager moves this week:

PETE MARQUARDT joins Journal Broadcasting’s Green Bay duopoly, WGBA-TV and WACY-TV.  He’d been the GM for WJFW-TV in Wausau-Rhinelander, WI.  He’s being replaced there by STEVE SHANKS who’s been the General Sales Manager for WFRV-TV in, you guessed, it Green Bay.

In Roanoke, VA, LEESA WILCHER will leave WSLS-TV later this spring to return to Tennessee, where she’d been the GM for sister Media General station, WJHL-TV in Johnson City.  She’d been GM in Roanoke for about three years.

And ALEJANDRO SANCHEZ SOBRINO has been named GM of Telemundo’s WTMO in Orlando, FL.  That’s a low power digital station.
