September 24, 2023

Greetings:

TWO new news directors named during this week, with NO new openings.

That means our list of places with open ND jobs drops to 33. And we have ONE Paid Ad this week, for an EP job in New York state.

No GM changes.

There’s ONE obituary for a longtime Miami newswoman who I was lucky enough to have worked with briefly. CARMEL CAFIERO was the first female reporter at Channel 7 in Miami and was a terrific investigative reporter. Read on for three good stories about her.

The non-profit SciLine is back with another list of expert interviews and videos to help provide information for your newscasts, and ads from our regular advertisers WMVision and Stephen Arnold Music.

I had a chance to get together at RTDNA with former ND and GM MARIA BARRS and learned more about her new book advertised below. Sounds great and I’ve pre-ordered a copy.

In Names in the News, some promotions at CBS News, and details (and a picture!) from a reunion of some CBS Newspath veterans.

Finally…it was good to see old friends and meet new ones at the RTDNA conference in Minneapolis this week. Executive Director DAN SHELLEY told me attendance was a post-pandemic record of 225 registrants.

That, of course, is a far cry from the last time the confernece was in Minneapolis, in 2000…the last full conference before 9/11 the next year, which changed so many things.

SciLine, a philanthropically funded, free service for reporters, arranges 1-on-1, broadcast-quality interview opportunities with articulate scientists. Reporters can book 15 mins with them via Zoom or request a SciLine interview clip for your use. SciLine also runs a free expert matching service that connects reporters rapidly to scientist-sources on deadline.

Newly Named News Directors:

Buie

WDIO-TV, Duluth, MN…this Hubbard Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate has promoted ALEXANDRA BUIE to news director. She started at the station as a photographer, became a producer, and was named Assistant News Director last year. Alex replaces ROB HEVERLING, an ordained minister, who left to minister a church in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. Rob was ND here for two years.

Atwood

KIFI-TV, Idaho Falls, ID…KADE ATWOOD returns to Idaho as ND for this News Press and Gazette operation. For the last 18 months, he’s been the Assistant ND for Sinclair’s KSNV-TV (NBC) in Las Vegas. But before that Kade was ND for KMVT-TV in Twin Falls, ID, for about 3 1/2 years before moving to Las Vegas. At KIFI, he replaces veteran ND BILL CUMMINGS who is retiring. His last day was scheduled to be Friday, 9/22.

Nemitz

And finally, apologies to the new VP/News for WCCO-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul, BRIAN NEMITZ, whose first name I got wrong in last week’s report on his new job. Brian’s spent the last eight years at WLOS-TV (ABC) in Asheville, NC, the last five as ND and has also worked in Miami, Grand Rapids, Pensacola, and Eau Claire, WI. Brian replaces KARI PATEY who’ll be VP/Producer Development for CBS owned stations.

New News Director Openings:

I’m not aware of any new openings this week but happy to be told otherwise if you know something I don’t know.

Paid Help Wanted Ad:

Morning Executive Producer, WIVB-TV, Buffalo, NY:

WIVB/WNLO in Buffalo, NY is searching for a hands-on, passionate journalist for the position of Morning Executive Producer.

WIVB-TV is stationed between historic downtown Buffalo and beautiful Niagara Falls. To those who are unfamiliar with Western New York, Buffalo may just be another “rising” city. But to all of us at WIVB-TV, we know it’s much more than just chicken wings and beef on weck. It’s the City of Good Neighbors, the Queen City, or simply – home.

From the ever-growing Waterfront development, the changing seasons, wine country, and pro sports (with passionate fans like you’ve never seen before) and the flavorful food, it’s pretty tough to beat the unique, local feel!

Our brand is “We’re 4 Buffalo” and we live it every day with local news coverage by our enthusiastic news team. We offer factual news and locally produced programming with market-wide digital delivery on https://www.wivb.com

We are looking for a creative leader who can teach and execute the importance of showcasing and tight, concise writing. The successful candidate will work closely with reporters on daily story development and script approval; with newscast producers on story selection, showcasing, meter management and tease writing; and with the assignment desk to help dispatch crews efficiently and aggressively. The successful candidate also will be required to line produce as needed, help manage producer staff schedules, give regular feedback to members of the news team, and work with other news managers to constantly refine and improve the entire newsroom operation.

Obituaries:

Cafiero

CARMEL CAFIERO, a groundbreaking reporter for Channel 7 in Miami (originally WCKT-TV and later WSVN-TV) died Friday at the age of 76. She suffered from pulmonary issues. Carmel was the first female on air reporter when she joined WCKT in 1973 and enjoyed a 43 year career as an investigative reporter and anchor, winning Peabodys and DuPonts along the way. Three stories for you, all worth your time: from WSVN, from The Miami Herald and The South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Full disclosure: I worked with her from 1976-77 and took the above picture at a Channel 7 reunion in 2016.

Names in the News:

Kate Z.

CBS News made several appointments this week among senior news management, and a name familiar to many CBS affiliate news managers was involved. KATE ZUCKERMAN was named VP of Affiliate Relations and Special Events Planning. Kate’s 17 year history at CBS is outlined on her Linkedin page. Check out the others with new roles by clicking here.

Speaking of CBS News, special correspondent STEVEN ACKERMANN provided these details and pictures of a reunion held this weekend in Charlotte:

Long before Zoom, Skype and FaceTime and before live streaming and websites, a few folks at CBS News created what is now Newspath. A few of them later went to create NBC Newschannel. These are the folks that made pictures fly through the air (sometimes on actual airplanes and other times on greyhound buses or turnpike couriers). CBS Newspath Regional Producer Bill Jones organized a weekend reunion that included Bob Horner (later President of NBC Newschannel) and former CBS News VP John Frazee.

General Manager News and Notes:

To the best of my knowledge, there were no moves among GM this week. If you know something I don’t, please let me know!

September 18, 2023

Greetings:

A surfeit (I sneak that word in every year or two) of ND hires this week leads our report. SIX new news directors, with just THREE openings.

Our list of stations with open ND jobs drops to 35. One of those 35 stations is among our TWO Paid Help Wanted ads this week.

Just TWO items in Names in the News, ONE new GM in a top 20 market, and NO obituaries.

And be sure to check out the ad just below.

She’s been a news director (in Dallas), a GM (in Sacramento) and now MARIA BARRS adds author to her resume. It’s a mystery with a reporter (another job Maria had in her career) as the protagonist. Learn more about the book and how to buy it by clicking on the ad.

Hope to see many of you this week at the annual RTDNA conference in Minneapolis.

Nemitz

WCCO-TV, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN…it was a busy week at CBS which named BRAD BRIAN NEMITZ as VP/ND here (the only one with that title as far as I know.) Brian’s spent the last eight years at WLOS-TV (ABC) in Asheville, NC, the last five as ND. He’s also worked in Miami, Grand Rapids, Pensacola, and Eau Claire, WI and replaces KARI PATEY who becomes VP/Producer Development for the CBS owned stations

Stevens

WBTV, Charlotte, NC…assistant ND JASON STEVENS ascends to the ND job at this Gray owned CBS affiliate replacing MOLLY KELLEHER who’s off to Gray’s KCTV (CBS) in Kansas City as Assistant ND. Kessie

WOOD-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…longtime Biloxi, MS, newsman BRAD KESSIE will be the next ND for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate. He sent 35 years at WLOX-TV, the last 14 as ND. She’s been the Assistant News Director there for the past two years but first joined the station eight years ago as a director, a job she held at two other places. Celeste replaces LENA SADIWSKYJ. We told you last month that Lena was leaving to return to teaching.

It’s MOLLY JIRASEK who began her career in the market and most recently has been a producer for NewsNation in Chicago. More here. She also worked as the Assistant ND for WEEK-TV in Peoria. At WBND, she replaces KYLE FOBE who left in July to become ND for WISC-TV in Madison, WI.

New News Director Openings:

WLOS-TV, Asheville, NC…you learned in our item just above (as well as our Wednesday UPDATE) that BRIAN NEMITZ is leaving this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate to become the next VP/News Director for CBS’s WCCO-TV in Minneapolis. Brad spent more than five years as ND here and 3 1/2 as the Assistant ND before his promotion.

Good

WFXR-TV, Roanoke, VA…JOSH GOOD has left this Nexstar owned FOX affiliate after not quite three years as news director. Before moving to Roanoke, Josh had been the news director for KADN/KLAF-TV (FOX/NBC) in Lafayette, LA for about two years. He’s also worked in Fort Wayne, IN, Lexington, KY and Knoxville, TN.

WLOX-TV, Biloxi, MS…we told you above that BRAD KESSIE‘s 35 year career at this Gray owned ABC/CBS affiliate is ending with his upcoming move to the ND job at WOOD-TV (Nexstar/NBC) in Grand Rapids, MI. Brad began there as a reporter and has been ND for the last 14 years.

September 10, 2023

Wednesday, September 13, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another day, another new VP/News Director for a CBS o-and-o. And this time he doesn’t have to share the job with someone else!

Nemitz

BRIAN NEMITZ returns to the Upper Midwest as he’s been named VP/ND for CBS’s WCCO-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul. You’ll learn in this news release that Brian is from Western Wisconsin and watched WCCO growing up. He’s been the ND for Sinclair’s WLOS-TV (ABC) in Asheville, NC, since 2018 and had been the Assistant ND there for the previous three years. He’s also worked in Miami, Pensacola, FL, Grand Rapids, MI, and Eau Claire, WI.

At WCCO, Brian replaces KARI PATEY who moved to a newly created job as VP/Producer Development for the CBS owned stations. She’ll move to that new role (announced back in May) when Brian gets to the Twin Cities.

There’s still one more CBS owned station with an ND opening (WFOR-TV) in Miami. Will they fill that job tomorrow, making it THREE consecutive days with such an announcement?

I doubt it, but as too many bad reporters have said “Only time will tell.”

If not, we’ll be back Sunday.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, September 12, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran Los Angeles news executive returns to LA as one of TWO VP/News Directors for a network owned operation.

Goldberg

MATT GOLDBERG joins KCBS/KCAL-TV as VP/News Director, joining MIKE DELLO STRITTO as one of TWO managers with that title. This news release explains the division of duties between the two.

Matt’s spent the last 20 years with NBC, including stints at KNTV in San Francisco and KNBC-TV in Los Angeles where he was the Assistant ND.

Before going to NBC, Matt spent two years as an investigative producer with KCBS/KCAL. He also served two years as board president for Investigative Reporters and Editors.

Barring any more UPDATES, we’ll be back Sunday with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, September 11, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a news director change in a top 21 market today and we have the details.

Stevens

JASON STEVENS has been promoted to news director for Gray Television’s WBTV (CBS) in Charlotte. Details in this news release from the station, which includes his detailed career history. Jason’s been the Assistant News Director there since 2022.

He replaces MOLLY KELLEHER, who’s been ND here since January 2022 and is a nine year veteran of the station.

Kelleher

Molly is leaving to become the Assistant ND for Gray sister station KCTV (also CBS) in Kansas City. I asked her about what some might consider an unusual move, and here’s her reply:

It is incredibly motivating to hear about the direction GM Curtis Miles and News Director Josh Morgan are taking KCTV. Gray is building something exciting at KCTV with really great people and I’m excited to be a part of it. It is time to use all I have learned in my 9-year run at WBTV and go do great things for the next Gray station.

Also, I need to correct two items from last night’s full newsletter.

PATRICK PAOLINI took a new job as EVP of Ad Sales for Fox Television Sales. He did NOT retire, as I erroneously told you in reporting the appointment of his replacement as GM of Fox’s WTTG-TV in Washington, SUE DIVINEY.

And apologies to CARRIE HOFMANN, the former ND at Tegna’s WCNC-TV in Charlotte who’s off to be GM for WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC. I managed to spell Carrie’s last name THREE different ways in the emailed version of the newsletter (but as one reader pointed out, that’s a .333 average which would likely get me into the baseball Hall of Fame.)

I aspire to be better than that, though, and apologies to Carrie, Patrick, and to you.

We’ll see if we can do better next weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

For a holiday week, a fair amount of activity!

TWO new ND openings, one at a top ten network o-and-o, the other created by one of our favorite things, an ND leaving to take a GM job. And we have TWO ND jobs filled.

With those changes, our list of open ND jobs remains at 36, with ONE of those stations advertising its opening in our Paid Help Wanted ad section below.

In addition to that ND becoming a GM, another GM job was filled in a top ten market o-and-o.

In Names in the News, changes at the top of NPR and Univision News, am anchor crosses the street in Portland (OR) to take a news management job and there a number of other moves to share.

Barring a mid-week UPDATE, we’ll see you next weekend!

WBND-TV, South Bend, IN…this Weigel Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate has apparently filled its news director opening. GM AARON RAMEY confirmed the job had been filled and promised me a news release with details this week. We’ll share when we can.

Dugle

KIEM/KVIQ-TV, Eureka, CA…DAWN DUGLE will be the next news director for this Imagicomm owned operation. She replaces MARK FINNEGAN who left in June after less than a years as ND. Dawn’s a former ND in Arkansas who’s been out of the newsroom for a while as she’s been writing books described here as ‘spicy romantic comedies’. KIEM is an NBC affiliate with KVIQ is a low power CBS affiliate.

New News Director Openings:

Schiller

KRIV-TV, Houston, TX…multiple reports tell us that SUSAN SCHILLER parted ways this week with this FOX o-and-o. The first of those reports came from longtime Houston TV blogger MIKE McGUFF. I emailed Susan for confirmation but have not heard back. She’s been the ND here for seven years following a long career at CBS, including 15 years as ND for CBS’s KYW-TV in Philadelphia.

Hofmann

WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC…congrats to ND CARRIE HOFMANN who’s been promoted to general manager for sister Tegna station WLTX-TV (CBS) in Columbia, SC. She’s been ND for this NBC affiliate for more than three years following a six year run as ND for Scripps’ KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City. Carrie’s also worked in Denver, Milwaukee, and Phoenix, in addition to an earlier turn at WCNC.

Paid Help Wanted Ad:

September 4, 2023

Greetings:

It’s probably not unusual for another slow week leading into the holiday, though we do have TWO new news directors, but again, no openings to my knowledge.

Our list of stations with open ND jobs drops to 36, with ONE of those stations advertising its opening in our Paid Help Wanted ad section below.

We’ll tell you about a former ND turned GM making another move up the corporate ladder.

There’s ONE obituary for a longtime NBC/Telemundo executive, and a request for stories about a man whose death we reported last week.

In Names in the News, a new leader at CNN, more on the end of a long ND tenure in San Diego, a VERY unusual move from a network o-and-o which is replacing its 6:00 PM news with…Jeopardy.

That and much more below. Enjoy Labor Day, even if you have to labor Monday.

Newly Named News Directors:

Henning

WAAY-TV, Huntsville, AL…ADAM HENNING returns to this Allen Media Group owned ABC affiliate as ND. Adam held that job from 2005-07 and was ND for WAFF-TV in Huntsville from 2009-16. Adam has been working in marketing since leaving WHBQ-TV (FOX) in Memphis in 2021. Adam’s LinkedIn page will also show his other ND jobs. STEPHEN GALLIEN, who’s been the ND here since 2020 will become Assistant ND.

Baumann

WBUP/WBKP-TV, Marquette, MI…this ABC/CW affiliate has apparently named ALEXIS BAUMANN as its news director. That’s according to the station’s website. I’ve emailed Alexis asking how long she’s been on the job and will share her answer if/when she replies.

New News Director Openings:

I’m not aware of any new news director openings this week.

Please let me know if I’ve missed one.

Obituaries:

Browne

DON BROWNE died Wednesday, August 30th, at the age of 80. Don was a longtime NBC executive. He was an EVP of NBC News in the early 90’s, and became GM for NBC’s WTVJ-TV in Miami where he earlier had been the bureau chief. He later became Presdient of Telemundo. We have two obituaries, first from his former station, WTVJ, and from Variety magazine.

Case

Last week’s obituary of GEORGE CASE brought several emails with fun anecdotes from some of his friends. I shared those with George’s longtime friend, KIM MONTOUR, who plans to share them with George’s family. Kim also asked if others could send along stories that she could share with George’s widow, LAURA. You can send to them Kim via an email sent here.

Names in the News:

It’s been widely reported elsewhere, so you likely already know that MARK THOMPSON is the new chairman and chief executive of CNN.

Cohen

You learned yesterday in our UPDATE that STEVE COHEN’s long tenure as ND for San Diego’s KUSI-TV ended Friday when Nexstar took over that independent station. Nexstar already owns KSWB-TV (FOX), is combining the newsrooms, with current KSWB ND RICH GOLDNER overseeing the newsroom. Steve was ND there for 20 years. If you missed our UPDATE with many more details, you can find it here.

In an unusual move for a network owned station, viewers of CBS owned KTVT-TV in Dallas will find KEN JENNINGS on their TV sets when they tune in at 6:00 PM beginning Monday, September 11. The station is replacing its 6:00 news with Jeopardy followed by Wheel of Fortune. KTVT is adding a 7:00 newscast on its independent station, KTXA-TV.

Mussoni

I heard from a few friends after reporting JOHN BOBEL‘s retirement last week. Among those was JOHN MUSSONI, who worked with us at KCCS, Missouri’s campus radio station. John went on to a great career along what he calls the Amtrak northeast corridor, working in both radio and TV in several markets, including ND jobs at multiple outlets in Philadelphia. He sent along a note, calling it an appreciation note rather than his retirement note. His email is included in that note if you want to reach out.

General Manager News and Notes:

Rogers

Congratulations to one-time news director turned general manager TRACEY ROGERS as she continues her climb up the corporate ladder. Nexstar this week promoted her to Senior Vice-President and Regional Manager. Tracey is currently GM for Nexstar’s WKRN-TV (ABC) in Nashville, has been a GM for stations in Memphis and Jonesboro, AR, and worked as an ND in Memphis, Huntsville, and Paducah, KY.
