Monday, November 27, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A transfer within Tegna fills one of the largest market (and oldest) ND openings on our list.

Fowler

CAROL FOWLER, who’s been the Director of Content at Tegna’s KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis since 2019, is headed to Atlanta to have the same title at the company’s WXIA-TV (also NBC). Here’s the staff memo from GM KRISTIE GONZALES, and the Tegna news release announcing Carol’s hire. Carol’s also been a news director for THREE stations in Chicago among a few other jobs, as outlined on her LinkedIn page.

At WXIA, Carol replaces JENNIFER RIGBY, who left way back in March to become Senior News Consultant for Gray Television.

We’ll see you Sunday with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

I hope you and yours had a great holiday week.

People were so busy celebrating that very little news was generated for this week’s edition. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)

We have ONE newly named news director (though it may not be ‘newly’ named since it apparently happened in April).

With no new openings, our list of stations with ND openings drops to 31.

ONE of those open ND jobs is advertised below, among with an ad for an EP job in Portland, OR.

We have ONE obituary of a former ND turned GM, and news of another ND turned GM who is retiring at the end of the year.

After Black Friday and Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, when all are encouraged to make a donation to a cause that is important to them.

Longtime readers know of my appreciation for Investigative Reporters and Editors. I’ve long been a member and was privileged to be appointed to the Board of Directors earlier this month.

This holiday season, please join me in supporting @IRE_NICAR, an organization that provides valuable training and resources for investigative journalists which is needed now more than ever.

Click on the graphic below to make your contribution, and thanks in advance.

SciLine, a philanthropically funded, free service for reporters, arranges 1-on-1, broadcast-quality interview opportunities with articulate scientists. Reporters can book 15 mins with them via Zoom or request a SciLine interview clip for your use. SciLine also runs a free expert matching service that connects reporters rapidly to scientist-sources on deadline

Upcoming training from SciLine:

Upcoming expert-interview availability (Zoom):

Newly Named News Directors:

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…if Linkedin is to be believed, and it’s on the internet so it must be true, right?…JOE STUDLEY has been the ND at this Standard Media owned ABC affiliate since April following two months as the Assistant ND. Joe’s spent much of his career on the east coast except for a four year run at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. He replaces ALLISON GAITO who left in February after less than a year. Joe is the FIFTH ND here in less than two years.

New News Director Openings:

Perhaps due to the holiday week, I am not aware of any new news director openings. If you know something I’ve missed, please let me know!

November 19, 2023

Greetings:

Happy Thanksgiving week!

A flurry of new NDs this week with just ONE opening. ONE of those new ND’s may be among the tallest NDs in the country!

With those changes, our list of stations with ND openings drops to 32.

TWO of those jobs are advertised below, among our FIVE paid help wanted ads this week: the other ads are for management jobs in Portland, OR, Des Moines, IA and Baton Rouge, LA.

We have TWO obituaries of people who left our business a number of years ago, and TWO items in Names in the News of people who are still very much IN our businnes.

If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving this week, hopefully you’ll enjoy good weather and safe travels. We’ll see you here next weekend.

SciLine briefing: Abandoned oil and gas wells

November 30th from 2-3 p.m. ET

Researchers estimate that there are between 2-3 million abandoned oil and gas wells in the United States, and more than 117,000 of those, across 27 states, are “orphaned”– that is, uncapped, unproductive, and with no responsible party identified to manage leakage or pollution risks. SciLine’s next media briefing will cover where these wells are, both onshore and off, and why it is so hard to find them; the types of greenhouse gas and other emissions they leak into the atmosphere; and the environmental and economic costs and benefits of finding and capping them. Three experts will make presentations, and then take questions on the record.

Newly Named News Directors:

WATE-TV, Knoxville, TN…JEFF HOUSTON will be the next ND for this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. Here’s the staff note from GM KIM BYRD. Jeff’s been the ND for Sinclair’s WBMA-TV (ABC) in Birmingham for nine years and was the Assistant ND there for a year before that. He’s a former ND in Tupelo and has worked in several other markets. Jeff replaces ALLISON COE who left in July for a family related move to a sales position at Nexstar’s WJHL-TV in Tri-Cities, TN.

KETV, Omaha, NE…congratulations to SARAH KLINGER who’s been promoted to news director for this Hearst owned ABC affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND here for more than five years, as you’ll learn by checking out her station bio. Sarah’s also worked in Grand Rapids, MI, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. She replaces VONN JONES who is leaving for some new adventures after 28 years at the station, the last 5 1/2 as ND. He’s also worked in Milwaukee.

KTVH-TV, Helena, MT…we promised you last week that we’d share the nae of the new ND here when it was announced. It’s JESSICA NELSON who returns to the station: she’d been an anchor there before taking a job working for the state of Montana. If you read her station bio, you’ll learn she may be among the tallest news directors in America! She replaces ERIC JOCHIM who will remain at KTVH as an EP.

KIMA-TV, Yakima, WA…JOHN KENNEDY O’CONNOR is the new news director and anchor for this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. He’s been an anchor for KIEM-TV in Eureka, CA, but has a MOST interesting background.

Also, we’ve removed KAEF-TV in Eureka, CA, from our list of stations with ND openings. Sinclair gutted the news department there earlier this year and is now airing newscasts from a station in Redding, CA.

New News Director Openings:

WBMA-TV, Birmingham, AL..we told you above that JEFF HOUSTON is leaving this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate to become ND for Nexstar’s WATE-TV in Knoxville, TN. Jeff was ND here for more than nine years.

November 12, 2023

Greetings:

We need to start with an important correction from last week’s newsletter.

We reported that KUVN-TV (Univision) in Dallas had a news director opening.

That is incorrect.

The opening is actually at KNVO-TV in McAllen, TX.

Apologies to everyone at KUVN and CALIXTO GONZALEZ who remains the ND there.

Moving on, this week brings news of TWO new news directors and departures of TWO others news directors.

Our always unofficial list of stations with open ND jobs stands at 34. TWO of those stations are advertising their openings, among our FIVE paid help wanted ads this week: the other ads are for management jobs in Portland, OR, Des Moines, IA and Baton Rouge, LA.

There are TWO new GMs to tell you about both at Pennsylvania stations owned by Sinclair.

Sinclair is making less positive news in Oklahoma, where it is sending newscast production away from KTUL-TV in Tulsa to Oklahoma City.

That’s in Names in the News, where we also have stories about a new newscast model in Cincinnati, a new CBS News VP who’ll oversee data journalism, the finalists for the duPont awards, a retirement of a 30+ year DC area news director you’ve probably never heard of, and we’ll tell you about the newest member of the IRE Board of Directors.

It’s someone you’ve heard of.

Newly Named News Directors:

Movesian

WWMT-TV, Kalamazoo, MI…KARIN MOVESIAN has assumed additional duties as news director for this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. She’s remains ND for Sinclair’s WEYI-TV (NBC) in Flint/Saginaw, MI, a job she took in September, 2022. (I’m told the new role at WWMT actually began in May.) Karin’s been an ND in St. Louis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, and for WNEM-TV (CBS) in Saginaw. She replaced MATT JOHNSON who returned to the American Heart Association

KTVH-TV, Helena, MT…this Scripps owned NBC affiliate has hired a new news director yet, but the announcement of WHO that person is has not yet been revealed. We”ll tell you who when that happens. They’ll replace ERIC JOCHIM who will reman as an EP there.

New News Director Openings:

Moreland

WRIC-TV, Richmond, VA…SHANE MORELAND resigned as news director here this week. Shane’s been here for six years and has served as ND in several others. You’ll learn on his Linkedin page that he also worked as a GM once and in news management jobs in several other markets. He told me he’s looking for ‘something new’. WRIC is owned by Nexstar and is an ABC affiliate.

Overacker

WHEC-TV, Rochester, NY…DAVE OVERACKER left this Hubbard Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate on Friday. He’s been news director there since April, 2019 and had worked at the station (in his hometown) for 31 years, starting as a photographer and working his way up to news director. He posted this on his Twitter account.

KNVO-TV, McAllen, TX…we mentioned above there’s an ND opening here.

Names in the News:

KTUL-TV has broadcast from Tulsa since 1957. That will change next month when its newscasts will be produced from sister Sinclair Broadcasting station KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City. KTUL will still have reporters based in Tulsa. More details in this story from The Tulsa World.

Another example of a broadcasting company trying something different comes from Cincinnati, where Scripps’ owned WCPO-TV (ABC) used what it calls Scrippscast Technology which diminishes the role of the anchor. Longtime Cincy media writer JOHN KIESEWETTER has more.

Curtis C.

You may not be familiar with the name CURTIS CRUTCHFIELD. I wasn’t, either, but learned that he’s retiring as news director after more than 30 years at Prince George’s County Community Television. (that’s a Washington, DC suburb). During that time he’s mentored and trained many journalists. WRCTV (NBC), which has a relationship with the station, profiled him.

THIRTY entries were announced this week as finalists for the 2024 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards. It was good to see that a number of local television stations were included. Check out the entire list here.

Kelly

CBS News and Stations has hired JOHN KELLY as Vice Presdient of Data Journalism, a new position. He comes from ABC, where he held a similar role for both ABC News and the ABC owned stations. There much more information in this news release.

You may remember last week I was bemoaning the lack of items for Names in the News and beseeching you to send along your items.

I should have looked in the mirror as this was available, but I forgot. 😉

Sinclair named general managers for two of its stations in Pennsylvania.

JASON WILDENSTEIN moves from WJAC-TV (NBC) in Johnston-Altoona-State College to WHP-TV (CBS) in Harrisburg. He’ll be succeeded at WJAC by JASON CHAVIS, who’s been the General Sales Manager there

November 5, 2023

Monday, November 5, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

An important correction to this week’s edition.

We reported that KUVN-TV in Dallas had a news director opening.

That is incorrect.  The opening is actually at KNVO-TV in McAllen, TX.

Apologies to everyone at KUVN and ND CALIXTO GONZALEZ who remains the ND there.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

While we have a fair amount of ND movement this week, there’s not much else: no GM changes, and no items in Names in the News. Perhaps time for our occasional reminder to send along your news.

THREE news director jobs were filled this week, while TWO new jobs opened up, both at Spanish language stations in Dallas Texas.

Our list of stations with open ND jobs drops to 31.

Sciline returns with a timely interview opportunity as Thanksgiving nears, and our regular advertisers WMV and Stephen Arnnold Music would benefit from your click on their ads!

We’ll hopefully have more news next week!

Newly Named News Directors:

Baldwin

WHNT-TV, Huntsville, AL…GREG BALDWIN returns to the news director chair as he joins this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. He’s been the Assistant ND for Gray’s WVLT-TV (CBS) in Knoxville, TN. GM STAN PYLANT sent this note to the staff. Greg’s a former ND in Augusta, GA, and Traverse City, MI. His extensive career history is here. Greg replaces RICK BOONE who left in July after about a year as ND.

Spencer

WQAD-TV, Moline, IL…proving that you CAN go home again, COREY SPENCER moves within Tegna to become ND for this ABC affiliate. He’s currently the Assistant ND for KARE-TV (NBC) in Minneapolis-St Paul, but said on Linkedin he grew up watching WQAD. You’ll see that post and Corey’s career history here on Linkedin. He replaces ALAN BAKER who left in March after 13 years as ND.

Reyna

KNOP-TV, North Platte, NE…thanks to a loyal reader who tipped us that BEATRIZ REYNA is now the ND for this Gray owned NBC affiliate. Beatriz is also the noon anchor according to her station bio. And apparently she’s been in that job since December so apologies for dropping the ball. Beatriz replaced MELANIE STANDIFORD who, according to our report in October, 2022, was terminated for collecting signatures on a petition to effectively ban abortions in Curtis, NE.

New News Director Openings:

KXTX-TV, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX…there’s a posting for a news director position at this NBC owned Telemundo station. My archives from 2020 reported that JOHN STONE, VP/News for NBC’s KXAS-TV was assuming oversight of the Telemundo operation as well. I’ve emailed John to get the details.

KUVN-TV, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX…and while we’re in the Metroplex we can tell you that there is also a posting for an ND opening at the Univision affiliate. My records show CALIXTO GONZALEZ has been the ND there since November 2021.

KNVO-TV, McAllen, TX…this Univision station has a news director opening.
