Wednesday, August 2, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

For the second time in two weeks, we’re pleased to tell you about a large market news director who’s headed to a GM job at a network owned station!

Eikel

This time it’s AMBER EIKEL, who returns to Seattle as GM for FOX’s KCPQ-TV. Amber’s been the news director for FOX’s KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco since 2017 and served as the assistant ND before that. Earlier in her career she was an EP for KIRO-TV (CBS) in Seattle. She’s also worked in Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Palm Springs, where she began her career as a producer for KMIR-TV in Palm Springs, CA. Many more details in this news release. Amber replaces SHEILA OLIVER who moved to Chicago as GM for FOX’s WFLD-TV.

Attentive readers will remember that we told you two weeks ago that KIM VOET, longtime ND for WDIV-TV in Detroit (Graham Media/NBC) was going to Miami as VP/GM for CBS’s WFOR-TV.

Gurley

Amber’s announcement was the second FOX general manager that the company named this week. Earlier, JEFF GURLEY was promoted from sales manager to GM for KDFW-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Jeff’s been at the station since 1997. More details here. Jeff replaced a longtime GM, KATHY SAUNDERS, who announced her retirement in late June and left the building four days later. Kathy was GM at the station since 1997.

I’m in Birmingham at NABJ and hope to see some of you here. (Caution: If you’re staying at the Embassy Suites, the internet in the rooms is AWFUL. AWFUL. I had to go to the lobby to send this UPDATE.)

All the week’s news this weekend in our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It’s a very full newsletter, with a handful of news director changes and lots of items in Names in the News.

FOUR jobs have been filled, with TWO* new openings, meaning 33 stations are on our list of open ND jobs. THREE of those stations are adverising their jobs among our FOUR paid help wanted ads.

Why the asterisk on there TWO* new openings. Because the person hired will be one of TWO VP/ND’s at this CBS o-and-o.

TWO items in our GM section, although one of them is far above the GM ranks.

TEN items in Names in the News covering a wide range of topics.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at this week’s NABJ conference in Birmingham. The Univeristy of Missouri is holding a reception for friends and alums Friday from 5:30-7:00 at the Uptown Cantina Restaurant near the convention center. Light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. See you there!

Newly Named News Directors:

Diaz

KXTV, Sacramento, CA…MONIKA DIAZ returns to the corner office as Director of Content for this Tegna owned ABC affiliate, where she once worked as a reporter. Monika worked as the ND for KTXL-TV, the FOX affiliate in Sacramento for just over three years until 2021. Details about her career since then in this news release. She replaces JILL MANUEL who left in June after four years at the station.

Roy

WIVB-TV, Buffalo, NY…a promotion at this Nexstar owned CBS station sees JOSH ROY moving to the ND job. He’s been the assistant ND, the latest role in a 20 year run at WIVB where he began as a photojournalist. Details in this memo from GM JOE ABOUZEID. Josh replaces his former boss, BREANNE BETTS who left the station in May after less than a year as ND following a long run as Assistant ND for Nexstar’s WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH.

Reese

KMIR-TV, Palm Springs, CA…DAVID REESE returns as ND at this Entravision owned NBC affiliate (the company’s only NBC station). He was there from 2013-2017. He replaces TRINO MARTINEZ who David hired as a producer and is taking a job out of TV. Two notes: depending on how you count David’s terms, he’s the FIFTH ND in six years here. But he’s the only one that owns an FM station in Palm Springs!

Boone

WXXV, Gulfport, MS…RICK BOONE is the new ND for this Morris owned FOX/NBC operation. He most recently was the ND for WHNT-TV in Huntsville, AL. His complete career history includes (VERY) large market reporting jobs and smaller market management gigs. Rick replaces JOE SULLIVAN. (And thanks to WXXV GM DON MOORE who sent a nice note sharing that Rick found the job by seeing the station’s ad in this newsletter.)

July 23, 2023

Greetings:

The move of a longtime top 15 market GM to become GM of a top 20 network owned station created the only ND opening this week.

TWO jobs have been filled, leaving 34 stations on our list of open ND jobs. THREE of those stations are among our FOUR paid help wanted ads.

For the first time in our long history, TWO advertisers are promoting their participation at the upcoming TAB convention downtown Austin.

Including the afore mentioned ND to GM job, there are TWO other new GMs to share.

There will NOT be a joint UNITY conference next year, combing NAHJ and NABJ. The reason should not surprise you. That’s among the stories in Names in the News. We’ll also tell you about a news director adding anchor duties to her job, a morning anchor turned news manager exits for a job at Intel, and learn which consultant pledged a big estate gift to his alma mater.

Details on all those stories and more just below.

MIRANDA COMBS, who’s been the ND for Morris Multimedia’s WTVQ-TV in Lexington, KY, has returned to the anchor desk but will continue as ND. She’ll co-anchor the 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00 PM news. Miranda spent 20 years at WKYT-TV in Lexington before leaving for a short time for a PR job. She returned to TV as the assistant ND for Nexstar’s WDKY-TV (FOX) before taking the ND job at WTVQ in the spring of 2022.

Mehlhaf

NINA MEHLHAF, who’s been the Managing Editor for Tegna’s KGW-TV (NBC) in Portland, OR, since 2022, is leaving for a job with Intel in Portland. She told her colleagues all about it. More details about Nina’s background in her still-on-the website KGW bio.

Drew

A tip of the fedora to longtime consultant and former news manager DOUG DREW. A proud Ohio University alum, Doug has pledged a substantial estate gift to his alma mater to create a fund that will provide support for professional development experiences for students to prepare them for careers. Before he was a consultant, Doug worked in a number of markets, including Phoenix and Minneapolis. Thank him for paying it forward via email.

And apologies to CHERYL STROY whose named we misspelled in reporting her move to Assistant ND for WAPT-TV, Hearst’s station in Jackson, MS.

General Manager News and Notes:

July 16, 2023

Tuesday, July 18, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Always pleased to tell you when a news director makes the move to a GM job, and that’s the case today.

KIM VOET, who’s been the news director for Graham Media’s WDIV-TV (NBC) in Detroit since 2011, is off to Miami to become General Manager for CBS owned WFOR-TV. Details in this CBS news release. Kim’s worked at WDIV since 1997, joining as a producer and working her way up the management ladder. She’s also worked for another Detroit station, in St. Louis, in Greensboro-High Point (two stations) and in Columbia, MO.

A St. Louis native and die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan, I do hope she negotiated Marlins tickets for when the Cardinals come to town!

More on this story and all the week’s news this weekend in our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

We’ve used this baseball cliché before, so apologies , but THREE up and THREE down this week…meaning THREE new news directors and THREE new openings.

That means our list of stations looking for a new news boss remains at 35. THREE of those stations are advertising those openings, among FOUR paid help wanted ads.

More GM changes at FOX owned stations, Sinclair names a new GM in Central Illinois, and a promotion for a former ND turned Hearst GM.

There’s an obituary for a pioneering TV executive who led several stations.

In Names in the News, an abrupt departure by the head of NAHJ, a change at the top of Univision News, a handful of job changes among news managers, and what I think is an important opinion column from longtime broadcaster HANK PRICE.

All that and more below!

Newly Named News Directors:

Brennan

KITV, Honolulu, HI…BILL BRENNAN has been promoted to news director for this Allen Media owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the managing editor here since JANICE GIN left earlier this year. Janice tells me she’s now retired. Bill’s a long time presence on the islands, both on TV and in various government public affairs positions as detailed on his Linkedin page.

Skrbin

WTAJ-TV, Altoona, PA…MELINDA SKRBIN joins this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate as its next news director. Melinda’s background is diverse with time spent both in broadcast news and broadcast education. Melinda replaces STEVEN SHAW who was promoted within Nexstar to become ND for the company’s duopoly, KSEE-KGPE-TV in Fresno. Steven was here about three years.

KMVT-TV, Twin Falls, ID…we are more than a little late in telling you that JOE MARTIN is both news director and senior anchor for this Gray owned station. And he’s been in those jobs since 2019, so we dropped the ball on that one. (A reminder that we rely heavily on your tips to keep this newsletter current.)

New News Director Openings:

Gall

WRAL-TV, Raleigh,NC…our Wednesday UPDATE told you that RICK GALL is retiring as ND for this Capitol Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate after what will be close to 20 years. That’s because he’s not retiring until May, 2024. Details from GM JOEL DAVIS. Rick first joined the station in 1995 as a reporter beofre moving up management to become ND in 2005. He also worked in Asheville, NC, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and Rockford, IL. Learn more in the Paid Help Wanted ad below!

Roberson

WRGB-TV, Albany, NY…this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate has an opening for ND posted on its career page. That appears to mean the end of PERNA ROBERSON’s time as ND after not quite three years. I’ve reached out to Perna and several Sinclair managers trying to get more details and will update if any respond. She was the Ass’t. ND here for two years before moving up, and has also worked in Atlanta, Birmingham, and Little Rock.

Boone

WHNT-TV, Huntsville, AL…RICK BOONE has left this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate after just over a year as news director. He came to Huntsville from another Nexstar station, KARD/KTVE-TV, in Monroe, LA, where he spent about 18 months as ND. His complete career bio (including time in some large markets) can be found on his Linkedin page.

Obituary:

Crump

Longtime broadcast executive HAROLD CRUMP  has died at the age of 91. The only story I could find was this detailed report from one of his former stations, WTVF-TV in Nashville. This undated biography has more of his career highlights. If you see more details about Harold’s passing and arrangements, please send them along.

Names in the News:

Price

We have a link to another HANK PRICE column which first appeared in TVNewsCheck.com. He points out (as others did when stories about the ‘great resignation’ and troubles in retaining staff first surfaced a year or so ago) that many of the issues creating these problems can NOT be solved by news directors. Read his column here.

Univision News President LEOPOLDO GOMEZ has left the company as of Friday to ‘pursue other interests’. Details from Media Moves.

And Media Moves also reports that DAVID PENA quit as executive director for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, just two weeks before last week’s annual conference in Miami.

Nexstar has promoted two long time news content executives. Read about new titles for JERRY WALSH and AUSTIN KELLERMAN by clicking here.

CHERYL STORY joins Hearst’s WAPT-TV in Jackson, MS, as assistant news director. She moves from Hearst’s Birmingham station, WVTM-TV, where she was an EP.

Kurtz

Long ago news director (Ft. Wayne and Lexington) KEN KURTZ is bouncing back from a series of health issues. He fell and suffered a broken hip last April. During surgery to repair the hip, doctors discovered some other things which might have otherwise gone undiscovered. He has more surgery in his future but says he’s otherwise feeling well. Ken is 93 but still following our industry. (He sent a separate email asking direct questions about specific topics covered at last month’s IRE convention.) Your kind email can cheer him up: click here for his email address.

General Manager News and Notes:

Oliver

The general manager changes at FOX owned stations continued this week. SHEILA OLIVER moves from KCPQ-TV in Seattle to Chicago as GM for WFLD-TV there. Details here.

And GLENN BERK joins FOX’s WITI-TV in Milwaukee, replacing CHUCK STEINMETZ who is retiring after 22 years as GM and 27 at the station.

Sinclair’s WICS/WICD-TV in Central Illinois has a new general manager: ROBERT P. RICHARDSON.

Grimes

One time news director KYLE GRIMES continues his climb up the corporate ladder at Hearst. He continues as GM for WCVB-TV (ABC) in Boston and assumes additional duties as Vice President, New England, overseeing other Hearst properties in the region. Details about his new job and his past (starting as a producer before serving as news director for two Hearst stations) by checking out this story from the WCVB website.

July 9, 2023

Wednesday,July 12, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A longtime Raleigh news director is retiring from his job.

But there’s an unusual twist.

He’s not leaving until next year!

   Gall

RICK GALL, who’s been news director for Capitol Broadcasting’s WRAL-TV (NBC) for more than 18 years, will leave the station at the end of May, 2024.

General Manager JOEL DAVIS told the staff today via this memo.

Rick first joined WRAL in 1995 as a reporter, later became an Assignment Editor, then Assignment Manager, Managing Editor, & Assistant News Director, before ascending to the ND job in January, 2005.

Rick replaced, I believe, JOHN HARRIS, who became Creative Services Director. It’s was John’s second turn in the ND office.

The station is beginning the search for this replacement, so you can start working on your resume. But wait to submit it until after you see the station’s ad for the job in this weekend’s newsletter!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

A rather busy week, considering it was holiday shortened.

There were TWO new news directors named, while there are FOUR new openings.

That leaves 35 stations on our list of open ND jobs, and TWO of those openings are among our THREE paid help wanted ads.

TWO GM changes, both at Tegna stations: ONE involves the retirement of a longtime Tegna GM, while ONE sees a newswoman promoted to a GM job.

And there are several items in Names in the News, including the retirement of a multi-time ND who’s headed to academia.

Read on for those stories and more.

Newly Named News Directors:

Kummer

WAVE-TV, Louisville, KY…MATT KUMMER moves within Gray to be the next ND for this NBC affiliate. He’s leaving Gray’s WVLT-TV (CBS) in Knoxville and posted this, while his new GM in Louisville, JOHN O’BRIEN sent this to his staff. Matt’s been at WVLT about two years, spent ten years as an ND in Green Bay, and has worked in several other markets. At WAVE, he replaces JENELLE SHRINER who left in June after about 18 months as ND.

Fobe

WISC-TV, Madison, WI…KYLE FOBE is the news news director for this Morgan Murphy Media owned NBC affiliate. Details in this staff memo from GM LYLE BANKS. Kyle’s been the ND for WBND-TV in South Bend, the Weigel owned ABC affilaite, for 3 1/2 years and earlier was an ND in Altoona, PA. Kyle replaces SARAH GRAY who left late last year after three years on the job.

New News Director Openings:

WLVT-TV, Knoxville, TN…if you were paying attention above, you already know that MATT KUMMER is leaving this Gray owned CBS affiliate for a Gray owned NBC affiliate in Louisville, WAVE-TV.

Miller

WCIA-TV, Champaign, IL…after 13 years in two stints at news director for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate, ANDY MILLER is jumping off the merry-go-round and starting his own business. He explained his new venture in this note to me. In between his two stints as ND here, Andy also spent six years working as a Director of Local Content Development for Nexstar.

WBND-TV, South Bend, IN…you also learned above (if you were paying attention, and, if not, shame on you) that KYLE FOBE is leaving one family owned station (Weigel, in this case) for another (Morgan Murphy) where he’ll be ND for CBS affiliate WISC-TV in Madison, WI.

Bill C.

KIFI-TV, Idaho Falls, ID…longtime newsman BILL CUMMINGS will retire this fall as ND for this News Press & Gazette owned station. By the time he leaves, Bill will have been here for about three years, one of (if my count is correct) NINE ND stops in his career. See if my math is good by checking out Bill’s Linkedin page and count them for yourself. 🙂

And while it is not a new opening, please check out the Paid Help Wanted ad below for the opening at Nexstar’s WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids. (If you get the job and dig deep enough, you might find memos I wrote during my tenure as ND from 1993-1995). 🙂

Names in the News:

Roth

Longtime ND GEOFF ROTH says he’s retiring and headed to academia:

After more than 4 decades, I am retiring from the TV news business. It has been a fun and wild ride that has taken me all over the country and allowed me to cover everything from hurricanes to political revolutions. Most importantly, I have made some amazing friends all across the globe and had the pleasure of working with many incredible journalists. However, I won’t be completely leaving the world of journalism. Starting this fall, I will be joining the faculty in the journalism department at the University of Houston as a Professor of Practice. Texas, here we come, and Go Coogs.

Geoff’s extensive career history is here.

Crutcher

WLEX-TV, the Scripps owned NBC affiliate in Lexington, KY, has named DeLAINA CRUTCHER as its next Assistant News Director. News Director JENNIFER SMITH sent this memo to the staff. DeLaina is in her second tour of duty with WLEX, has worked for another Lexington station, and in Columbus, OH.

Apologies to ALLISON GIBSON, as we screwed up the site of her longtime tenure at News 12 in our mention last week of her new job. She was, in fact, at News 12 New Jersey for 18 years, not News 12 Long Island.

General Manager News and Notes:

O’Dell

Longtime General Manager RICH O’DELL is retiring after more than 24 years running Tegna’s WLTX-TV (CBS) in Columbia, SC. Rich posted this note on social media. In addition to his long run at WLTX, he had a similar long tenure at WKYC-TV in Cleveland, where he spent 21+ years as Manager of Programming and Production. Rich also worked in Columbus, OH, and Paducah, KY.

Guyton

VALERIE GUYTON, who’s been the Assistant News Director for NBC’s KXAS-TV in Dallas-Ft. Worth, has been named President and General Manager for KWES-TV, KIDY-TV and KXVA-TV, all Tegna stations in West Texas. Details about Valerie’s new stations in this news release and more on Valerie’s varied background on her Linkedin page.
