January 29, 2023

Greetings:

There’s ONE new news director opening this week, while ONE job has been filled (though the announcement of WHO will get that job is a few days away).

So, our unofficial list of stations looking for a new news director remains at 28.

There are THREE Paid Help Wanted ads, all for jobs in the top ten markets.

The deadline for the RTDNA Murrow Awards is fast approaching, as is the decline for the Scripps Howard Awards. Details for both in Paid Ads below.

There are what I think of several interesting items in Names in the News (and other stuff), including one company increasing its streaming efforts with another pulling back. And there are some Names in the News items, including one about a news director turned mayor…who resigned that job in the middle of her term.

All that and more below!

Newly Named News Directors:

KIVI-TV, Boise, ID…we are removing that job from our list of open ND positions. I am told it has been filled but the announcement of who will fill the position at this Scripps station will come in a few days.

We’ll fill you in when it does.

The 70th Scripps Howard Awards, one of the nation’s most prestigious American journalism competitions, is accepting entries from now until Feb. 5, 2023, for journalism and storytelling produced in 2022.

Click here to apply for the 70th Scripps Howard Awards.

This year’s awards offer $170,000 in prize money in 15 categories. The awards honor work from television stations, networks, radio and podcasts, visual media, online media outlets, independent producers, newspapers and other print publications.

Finalists will be announced in September, with winners announced in October during a special program airing on Scripps News, formerly Newsy, the national broadcast news network owned by The E.W. Scripps Company.

New News Director Opening:

Nazarenus

WGAL-TV, Harrisburg/Lancaster, PA…we are a little tardy in reporting that ERIC NAZARENUS left this Hearst owned NBC affiliate at the end of the year. Eric worked here for more than 23 years, 17 as the assistant news director before being promoted to ND in May, 2021. Eric also worked for two stations in Baltimore in assignment manager roles. Eric’s Linkedin Page also lists an interesting side job, as a ‘sideline coordinator’ for the NFL.

Paid Help Wanted Ads:

Obituaries:

None this week.

Names in the News:

CBS’s Detroit owned station, WWJ-TV, launched its first newscast in years this week, airing programs at 6:00 and 11:00. It’s been the largest market o-and-o without its own news department. Several stories for you: the news release from CBS, a preview from The Detroit Free-Press, a detailed look at the operation from Newscast Studio, and the premiere 6:00 newscast.

We’re a little late in reporting that Nexstar has dropped live streaming of local newscasts in many of its markets, though you will be able to watch on a two hour delay. The reasons behind the move are detailed in this story from Mixdexhq.com.

Trevino

VIOLETA TREVIZO returns to the Southwest as she’ll be the new dayside executive producer for Gray’s Phoenix duopoly, KPHO/KTVK-TV (CBS/independent). Prior to Phoenix, she was the Assistant ND for WATN-TV (Tegna-ABC) in Memphis. She’s also worked for four years in Odessa/Midland at KWES-TV, where she held a variety of roles, and worked briefly at KJTV in Lubbock.

Akins

Former news director JULIE AKINS surprised her constituents this week when she resigned as mayor of Ashland, OR, a small town near Medford, OR. Julie was twice an ND for different TV stations in Medford, as well as in Fresno and Las Vegas. She also worked in San Francisco. More in this story from Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Quick hits:

As part of News Literacy Week, Detroit’s WXYZ-TV (Scripps/ABC) posted a primer on how the station gets news to you.

ABC and its Washington affiliate, WJLA-TV, are being sued by a Virginia family whose home was shown in a story about the ripple effects of January 6. It’s a good reminder to be careful about ‘wallpaper video’ but Poynter’s AL TOMPKINS is among several quoted in the story that think there’s little chance the plaintiffs will prevail.

General Manager News and Notes:

All the GM changes this week are at Spanish language stations.

GLENN COLEMAN has been promoted to President/GM of Univision’s KXLN-TV in Houston. He had been VP/station manager there.

And two moves at Telemundo stations, as detailed from Media Moves.

Several former top 20 market NDs have new jobs (okay, in one case he returns to his old company) while another two-time ND retires after more than 40 years in news.

And The National Press Club rips Nexstar over a deal to cover LIV Golf on the (mostly) Nexstar owned CW Network.

And just ONE new GM who’s replacing someone who held the job for more than TWO decades!.

All that and more below!

The 70th Scripps Howard Awards, one of the nation’s most prestigious American journalism competitions, is accepting entries from now until Feb. 5, 2023, for journalism and storytelling produced in 2022.

Obituary:

Sherwin

We have more on the death of TRAVIS SHERWIN, a longtime Hearst employee. We told you Sunday that Travis had passed away. We did not owe that Travis had left Hearst 18 months ago. While there, he’d been the EP of the investigative unit and the ND for Hearst’s WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach. He also worked for Hearst’s WESH-TV in Orlando, as well as for another Orlando station and stations in Ft. Myers and his native Wyoming.

Names in the News:

The controversial Saudi backed LIV Golf tour scored its first television contract with the CW Network, which is 75% owned by Nexstar. Details here. But in what strikes me as an unusual move, The National Press Club ripped the deal. USA Today has more.

Ginther

We told you Friday about two additions to the team at consulting and research firm SmithGeiger. MARK GINTHER joins as Senior VP of Strategy. He’s spent the last four years as Director of News Content and Operations for Sinclair. Mark’s a former news director in Seattle, Dallas, and Des Moines and has worked in Minneapolis : Linkedin tells the full story.

Culliton

And former news director and general manager JOHN CULLITON returns to SmithGeiger after almost a year away. John was a Senior VP for more than 17 years before leaving last April. He’s a former GM in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Minneapolis, where he began at WCCO-TV (CBS owned) as a producer and rose to VP/News and then GM. He began in Columbia, MO and then worked in Toledo, OH, where he worked for me when I was ND at WTOL-TV.

Kosowski

Veteran news director ED KOSOWSKI has a new gig.

He’s joined the University of North Texas at Dallas as Director of Integrated Communications. Ed explains his new job in this note he sent me. Ed’s a former ND in a number of markets, both large ands small, and also worked for CNBC. It’s all outlined on his Linkedin page.

Williams

Another former ND is noteworthy, not for a new job, but for her retirement. CAROLYN FESSLER WILLIAMS stepped down last month after more than ten years as the Assistant for WAVE-TV (NBC) in Louisville. Carolyn’s a former ND in Indianapolis and Tulsa but began her career at the Chicago News Bureau. She sent me this note which includes her entire career history.

And apologies to REBECCA BLUMENSTEIN whose name I misspelled last week in reporting her move to NBC News from The New York Times.

General Manager News and Notes:

Keefe

BETSY KEEFE steps into big shoes as she moves into the corner office for Gray’s WSAW-TV (CBS) in Wausaw, WI. She’s been the General Sales Manager there for ten years. But the man s he’s replacing is AL LANCASTER, who’s been the general manager there for 23 years. Al’s retiring after 45 years in our business. More here. Betsy’s also worked in Milwaukee.

January 14, 2023

Friday, January 20, 2023 UDPATE:

Greetings:

Big news today from one of our industry’s premiere consulting firms.

Ginther

MARK GINTHER joins SmithGeiger as a Senior VP of Strategy. He marked his fourth year yesterday as the Director of News Content and Operations for Sinclair. Mark’s been an ND in Dallas, Seattle, and Des Moines, and worked in other markets as you’ll learn here. SmithGeiger CEO DAVE SMITH told me they are happy to have Mark join the team, citing his station and corporate oversight experience.

Culliton

In other SmithGeiger news, JOHN CULLITON has returned to the company after almost a year away. He was a Senior Vice President for the company for more than 17 years before stepping away last April. John is a former GM in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Minneapolis, where he began as a producer and rose to news director and GM. John also worked in Columbia, MO and Toledo, OH. More on his Linkedin page, too!

Full disclosure. John was the weekend weather caster when I joined WTOL-TV as news director in Toledo in 1983. He applied for an open producer position which was an easy decision for me. And speaking of full disclosure, Dave Smith was a graduate teaching assistant when I was an undergrad at Missouri and accompanied me on my first story with a sound film camera.

I realize I have just dated myself (and maybe Smitty) for many younger readers. 🙂

More on this in our full newsletter on Sunday.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, January 17, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Today’s UPDATE brings news of the upcoming retirement of a longtime news director.

Holly’s been the ND here since 2017, crossing the street from KDVR-KWGN-TV. She’s also been an ND in Seattle and Philadelphia, and worked in Washington and a number of other markets as you’ll learn on her Linkedin page.

Bradshaw

And a reminder that the memorial service for ADAM P. BRADSHAW will be live streamed thanks to the staff at his last station, KFDX-TV (Nexstar owned) in Wichita. It’s scheduled to begin at 1:00 Central Time today.

You can watch it here.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

Obituaries:

Sherwin

TRAVIS SHERWIN, a longtime Hearst employee, passed away this week after a brief stay in hospice care. Services will be this week. I have few other details (though I have reached out to Hearst execs and will update my website if/when they respond). I believe he was currently working for Hearst’s Investigative unit and is a former ND for the company’s WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach. Here’s his outdated bio from that website.

Bradshaw

A memorial service for longtime newsman ADAM P. BRADSHAW will be held this Tuesday at 1:00 PM (CST) at First Baptist Church, 1200 Ninth St., Wichita Falls, TX. It will be live-streamed here. Adam was the ND at Nexstar’s KFDX/KJTL-TV in Wichita Falls when he died last Sunday at the age of 62. Memorial contributions can be made to either the American Diabetes Association or Investigative Reporters & Editors.

Names in the News:

Khemlani

The New York Post is reporting that CBS’s NEERAJ KHEMLANI is facing an internal HR probe. You can read the Post’s story here. It is not particularly pleasant. Neeraj is co-president of both CBS News and the owned stations division, a role he shares with WENDY McMAHON. He’s been criticized within CBS for cost-cutting and the way he treats underlings.

Meanwhile, changes at NBC News, where NOAH OPPENHEIM is stepping down as president and has cut a production deal with NBC Universal to produce projects. Many of his responsibilities will be taken by REBECCA BLUMENSTEIN, who has been a deputy managing editor at The New York Times. Here’s the Times story on the changes.

Speaking of management changes on a different level, there are some at KTIV-TV, Gray’s NBC affiliate in Sioux City, IA.

And some quick hits on a variety of stories:

Sinclair is dropping its 10:00 PM newscast on WUTV in Buffalo, costing four people their jobs. The Buffalo NewsALAN PERGAMENT has details in this story, where you will learn the anchor, meteorologist, and sportscaster anchored from other New York markets.

RTNDA announced winners of the 2023 First Amendment Awards. You’ll certainly recognize some of the names.

And two stories from Scripps:

The company has announced the names of six veteran print journalists for its Journalism Journalism Initiative. They will teach them video skills to keep their journalism talents in the industry. Google is supporting the initiative.

And Scripps and Cox have announced that Cox stations in Jacksonville and Orlando, FL, will partner with Scripps’ Florida 24 Network to provide content from those cities. This news release explains that The Florida 24 Network is a statewide over-the-top and over-the-air news network that provides real-time depth, context, and clarity to the biggest stories impacting Florida residents.

General Manager News and Notes:

Telemundo has made a number of GM changes at some of its stations. All the moves are outlined here in this story from Media Moves.

Tuesday, January 10, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

THREE items in tonight’s UPDATE. Health issues force a longtime ND to step down. There’s a new news director in San Antonio, and we have much more on the passing of ADAM P. BRADSHAW, including a lengthy on-air tribute to him from his last station. If you knew Adam…or even if you didn’t…you’ll want to watch it.

Hume

First, veteran news director CRAIG HUME is stepping down as ND for WBRE/WYOU-TV in Wilkes-Barre, PA. In the note he sent to his staff, Craig cited ‘personal health issues’ as the reason. Craig’s been the ND here for just a year, the latest stop in a long career that has taken him from markets large (Los Angeles and Chicago) to small. (WBRE is owned by Nexstar, which provides services to Mission Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate WYOU).

Orellana

In San Antonio, KSAT-TV Assistant ND MARIO ORELLANA has been promoted to news director at this Graham Media owned ABC affiliate. He has an interesting background…he began at the station as an unpaid intern and worked his way up to news director. More details in this story from the KSAT website. Mario replaces longtime KSAT news director BERNICE KEARNEY who was promoted to ND for Graham’s KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston.

Bradshaw

And we have new information on the death of KFDX/KJTL-TV (NBC/FOX-Wichita Falls, TX) ND ADAM P. BRADSHAW. We told you late Sunday night that he died at the age of 62. Adam had apparently been suffering from a lung infection though I have not yet seen an official cause of death.

The station aired a very nice tribute to their fallen leader, complete with interviews of Adam’s brother and former employees, and it includes pictures of Adam as a child. Worth watching.

I wanted to share a more casual picture of Adam than the one above. Adam and I enjoyed lunch together several times a year when he lived in Las Vegas. I took this picture in 2017 at one of his favorite places, the coffee shop at the Westgate (the former Hilton) Hotel and Casino.

He told me he went there often because he liked the lobster roll.

He was right.

It was good.

RIP, my friend.

Looks like we’ll have a very full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, January 9, 2023 UPDATE:

Greetings:

I’m very saddened to report the death of a well known news director who was a good friend to many, including me.

Bradshaw

KFDX/KJTL-TV (NBC/FOX-Wichita Falls, TX) ND ADAM P. BRADSHAW (and he ALWAYS insisted the middle initial be included) died Sunday afternoon. He was just 62 years old and had apparently been suffering from a lung infection

His sister posted this on Facebook which says he was found in his home. And the station has this story along with a link to his bio.

Adam’s Linkedin page has a detailed account of his career which took him from California to New York state..and several points in between. He had a long run as ND for KVVU-TV (FOX) in Las Vegas which ended with his 2015 firing (and he insisted I report that he HAD been fired.) His note to the staff then remains one of the most clicked items in the long history of this newsletter.

I’ll post more details when I have them.

Finally, I want to clear up a mistake I made in last night’s full newsletter. In reporting on CHRISTINA GINN’s move to EP of the Banfield show on NewsNation, I moved her former station (KVUE-TV) to San Antonio. Thanks to many of you who pointed out (without calling me an idiot) that it was, is, and will continue to be, located in Austin, TX.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Some of Mike’s friends had asked me to solicit notes for him as he was under hospice care. Unfortunately, Mike died Wednesday evening, probably before he could see of them. When I find a full obituary, I will include it in a future edition. Mike was also former GM of Guy Gannett’s station in Cedar Rapids, IA.
