But wait, there’s more! (A RON POPEIL tribute!)

Gray also promoted JAMES FINCH to Vice President of News Services. He’s been the company’s director of news services, managing vendor partnerships and content/resource sharing. He’ll add oversight of Gray’s in-house training program, He joined Gray when it bought Raycom: he had been ND for Raycom’s WBRC-TV (FOX) in Birmingham. More on James’ promotion in this news release.

Vazquez

Vazquez

Finally we close with the passing of longtime Texas newsman JERRY VAZQUEZ who lost his battle with cancer over the weekend. He was 54 and had been the ND for KTMD-TV (Telemumdo) in Houston since 2014. He earlier worked at KTRK-TV (ABC owned) in Houston. This obituary has complete details about Jerry’s work history and more.

I did not know him. After reading the obituary, I wish I had.

We’ll see you Sunday with our full report.

JUSTIN BILLAU, a 21 year veteran of Gray’s WTVG-TV (ABC) in Toledo, gets another promotion, this time to Assistant News Director. He began at the station as a photographer, advanced to chief photographer, and then moved to news operations manager. ND MICHAEL BALDWIN posted this note on Linkedin which explains some of the reasons for his frequent promotions.

Apologies to MICHAEL O’NEIL. We told you last week that he was moving from Tulsa to Baltimore as an EP for WMAR-TV (ABC). That was right, but we (and when I say ‘we’ I really mean ‘I’) misidentified his former station in Tulsa. He was at KTUL-TV (Sinclair/ABC) there, not KJRH-TV (Scripps/NBC) as we reported.

General Manager News and Notes:

Fogarty

The only General Manager change comes from Savannah, GA, where general sales manager MARSHA FOGARTY has been upped to GM at Gray’s WTOC-TV (CBS). She’s been at the station since 1998, first as an account executive before being promoted to local sales manager. Marsha’s been the GSM since 2014 and replaces LARRY SILBERMANN a one-time ND and former Raycom Regional ND who’d been the GM for almost seven years.

October 23, 2022

Greetings:

A very slow week, with just ONE new news director opening, NO new hires, and a resulting move to 20 openings on our admittedly unofficial list of open ND jobs. The full list is, as always, at the bottom of the newsletter.

FOUR of those 20 open jobs jobs among our FIVE paid help wanted ads. The fifth: an ad for Hearst which is seeking to fill an open news management recruiter position.

Election day draws near, and SciLine is back with an opportunity to interview an expert on political ads.

Always happy when there are no obituaries to share.

Just ONE GM hire to report this week.

We have several news management moves to share, all many involving people moving within their current companies. There’s details on the retirement of a long time Seattle newsman. And we’ll have a link to a story whose author suggests a 10 BILLION dollar program to support local news.

All that and more below!

Monday, October 17, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran news director makes a change.

Kosowski

Kosowski

ED KOSOWSKI, who’s been the news director at KTXL-TV (FOX) in Sacramento since May 2021, tells me he’s decided it was time for something new…and he’ll be leaving this Nexstar owned operation. Ed told me the timing seemed right. He’s been with Nexstar for six years, having started as ND at  KETK-TV (NBC) in Tyler, TX before moving to Sacramento.

Ed’s been an ND in San Francisco, Boston, Denver and Kansas City, was an EP at CNBC, and has worked in other markets, too. We’ll keep you posted on his next move when we can!

We’ll see you Sunday with our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

There are TWO new news directors in this week’s report, including ONE in the number ONE market. And…to the best of my knowledge…NO new openings.

Those moves change our list of open ND jobs to 19, with THREE of those jobs among our FIVE paid help wanted ads. We have an ad for a news management recruiting job at a large broadcaster and an ad for THREE faculty positions at the University of Kentucky.

Plus, SciLine is back with an updated list of opportunities for you to set up interviews with experts on different topics.

There’s an obituary for a well-regarded two-time medium market news director who died at 56.

TWO items about GMs…ONE coming in market TWO and ONE leaving a station where GM and ND changes are, sadly, way too common.

And…if you missed them..links to TWO important stories. One is last week’s Last Week with John Oliver’s HBO program with a critical look at how local news media covers crime. And the other is a CBS Mornings story on how reporters at a Las Vegas newspaper covered the murder of one of their colleagues. A Las Vegas elected official is charged with the murder.

All that and more below!

Newly Named News Directors:

He’s held a variety of network and other jobs since an almost nine year run as ND of Fox owned stations in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. More from his Linkedin page. Scott replaces REHAN ASLAM who passed away from a brain tumor in July at the age of 47.

Williams

Williams

KTVE/KARD-TV, Monroe, LA…CHELSEA MONAE WILLIAMS has been promoted to news director for this Nexstar CBS/NBC operation. The station posted this story to its website. Chelsea was the Assistant ND and had been serving as interim news director since RICK BOONE was promoted to ND for WHNT-TV in Huntsville, AL, in June. Nexstar owns KARD and operates KTVE for Mission Broadcasting.

Friends of the late Missouri Journalism Professor KENT COLLINS will be pleased to know contributions to his memorial fund have edged over the goal. But you can still help. Click here to give to the Kent Collins Student Enhancement Fund. Kent died in July after a short battle with cancer.

While on campus this week, I visited a memorial bench donated by his family with an appropriate inscription.

Names in the News:

Last Week logoHBO’s Last Week Tonight with JOHN OLIVER spent much of last week’s program on local media coverage of crime.

It was, by and large, not complimentary. Judge for yourself by watching the segment.

But on the bright side of the journalism ledger, check out this CBS Mornings story on how reporters at The Las Vegas Review-Journal covered the murder of the paper’s investigative reporter, JEFF GERMAN. An elected public official, ROBERT TELLES, who had been the target of German’s reporting, has been arrested in connection with the murder.

Details about news managers on the move:

Scripps’ FL24 news network has promoted SARAH GROSSBARTH to Managing Editor. She has been an EP there.

And Scripps KIVI-TV in Boise has filled its vacant Assistant ND job by hiring JEREMY DOWNING. Jeremy was an EP at WTOL-TV (CBS) in Toledo.

Veteran broadcaster STEVE CARLSTON returns to a Los Angeles General Manager’s office as he takes over at Fox’s KTTV/KCOP-TV. Steve spent eleven years as GM for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles before leaving in April. Steve earlier was the GM for two stations in Salt Lake City. He replaces BILL LAMB who left the station earlier this month after five years. More details in this story.

And the changes continue at KCTV (Gray/CBS) in Kansas City where General Manager ANDREW STEWART is out after less than a year. He joined the station in late 2021 when Gray purchased the Meredith stations. Andrew had spent 3+ years as GM for Gray’s Omaha station, WOWT-TV. Under Meredith, KCTV had a seemingly non-stop merry-go-round of GM and ND changes.
