TODD REED, who just joined Scripps’ KGTV (ABC) in San Diego as news director about four months ago, has already left the station. Staff was apparently told yesterday.

Todd joined the station earlier this year after spending 2 1/2 years as ND for Nexstar’s KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City. His Linkedin page (which does not list his time in San Diego under experience) has more on his background.

A veteran news director gets his first GM job!

Kiernan

JEFF KIERNAN moves within Scripps to become general manager for the company’s ABC station in Las Vegas, KTNV. He’s currently the ND for Scripps’ Detroit operation, WXYZ/WMYD-TV (ABC-independent). Complete details in this Scripps news release.

Of note: somehow the release fails to mention Jeff’s long run as ND of CBS o-and-o’s in Chicago, Boston, and Minneapolis, or that Jeff had TWICE been the ND for WTMJ-TV (NBC) in Milwaukee, once before Scripps owned it.

He replaces CHRIS WAY who left the station…along with ND NANCY BAUER…on the same day a few weeks ago. Ironically, Chris had replaced Jeff’s longtime friend and former boss in Milwaukee, JIM PRATHER.

We all know it’s a small world in our business.

Our full edition this weekend…which I teased will be full of news…just got fuller!

Finally apologies to LAURIE PASSMAN whose first name I misspelled in today’s earlier UPDATE in reporting her new role at KTVT-TV (CBS) in Dallas.

A top five market news director makes the difficult decision to step down, but she’s not going anywhere.

Passman

LAURIE PASSMAN, who’s been VP/News for CBS owned KTVT-TV in Dallas for the last four years, is moving to a new…and yet to be revealed…role at the station, She sent this very detailed and personal note to her staff, detailing the things life has thrown at her in the past few months that led her to this decision. It’s a lot.

Her new role will be announced soon.

She first joined KTVT as Assistant ND in 2015 and moved up to ND in 2018.

Laurie’s also worked in Phoenix, and Albuquerque where she was ND for KOB-TV. More details in her KTVT bio online.

Sunday’s (or Monday’s if the holiday interferes) newsletter will be full of other ND news.

That’s called a tease. Remember, I started as a producer. 🙂

Greetings:

More than 1,400 people attended this week’s IRE conference in Denver. Always great to see such a growing broadcast presence at my favorite conference.

And while I was away, a handful of new ND openings, including TWO new ones in Rochester, NY which joined TWO previous openings in nearby Buffalo.

In all, FOUR stations have ND openings this week, while, to my knowledge, NO new news directors were hired. That leaves 34 stations on our list of open ND jobs.

ONE of those 34 openings is advertising that job in our only paid help wanted ad this week.

She’s been the ND here for about a year, and came from Sinclair’s Syracuse operation where she was Assistant ND. WHAM is owned by Deerfield Media but operated by Sinclair which owns the FOX station in Rochester.

WROC-TV, Rochester, NY…and the second Rochester news director opening is at this Nexstar owned CBS station. STEVE KOLES will be leaving after about three years as news director here. Steve’s also held news director jobs in Columbus, OH and Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, MI. He’s also worked in Providence, Tulsa, Baltimore, and Norfolk.

WJBF-TV, Augusta, GA…this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate has posted an opening for news director to replace SCOTT ELLEDGE, who has been the ND here for a long time. I’m told he has a new job…and will report it to you when I can.

One time KIRO-TV news director HELEN SWENSON is the new Chief Content Director for Accu-Weather. According to this news release, she started there earlier this month. Helen most recently had been VP/Content for Spectrum’s NY1 in New York. In addition to KIRO, Helen was a news director in West Palm Beach, a GM in Birmingham, an SVP for The Weather Channel and a consultant for Magid.

Veteran marketing executive JIM THOMAS has a new job as (deep breath) Director of Marketing, Brand and Audience Engagement for Tegna’s KARE-TV (NBC) in Minneapolis. GM BILL DALLMAN shared the news release. Jim’s owned his own company most recently, but has worked in Denver, Milwaukee, and Grand Rapids, MI (among other stops) and also worked for Magid.

Quick hits:

Broadcasting and Cable takes an in-depth look at the always interesting Miami market, when Spanish language stations are number in several newscasts.

Several challenges to the Standard American-Tegna deal, with petitions filed with the FCC by several unions and also by Graham Media.

Finally, Canada’s CRTC will allow publicly funded CBC to reduce programming which many fear will impact over the air newscasts.

General Manager News and Notes:

ROBERT CROTEAU, an 18 year veteran of the market, has been promoted to GM for Sinclair’s WRGB-WCWN-TV in Albany, NY. He’s been director of sales there and previously worked in Boston and Champaign, IL.

And QUINN PACINI gets the GM job at Scripps’ KZBK/KXLF-TV in Bozeman and Butte, MT. He’s been working for Learfield Sports Properties, partnering with Montana State University.

ERICA HILL RODRIGUEZ has announced that she is leaving FOX’s KTTV in Los Angeles, where she’s been VP/News since late 2019. Earlier, Erica spent 6 1/2 years as news director for KCPQ-TV (FOX) in Seattle, where she worked for 12 years in her second stint there. She’s also spent time in Chicago and Boise.

Obituaries:

Harris

KING HARRIS, who served as both the news director and anchor for KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara, CA, for many years, died Tuesday night. He was 75. His former station remembered him with this on-air story. King also worked at KCOY-TV in San Luis Obispo as a producer and was a radio news director and taught journalism. The Santa Barbara Independent has more in a nice tribute.

Williams

Sorry to report the passing of longtime WPVI-TV (Philadelphia-ABC owned) producer and executive producer RICK WILLIAMS (not to be confused with the WPVI anchor of the same name). Rick retired in 2021 after 40 years at the station and lost a battle to esophageal cancer Thursday. Veteran WPVI anchor JIM GARDNER reported Williams’ death in this story.

Lucy

A 41 veteran of St. Louis’ KMOV-TV (Gray owned/CBS), DON LUCY, died unexpectedly this week. He was 63 years old and worked as a director for the morning news, which honored him with this story. Don was the longest tenured employee at KMOV, joining one year after his father (who started there four days after the station went on the air) retired. He also worked as a TD for Bally Sports, working Cardinals and Blues games.

In an unusual move during an acquisition, DEB McDERMOTT, Standard Media CEO, sent a note to Tegna employees saying the company has no intention of cutting staff. Poynter’s AL TOMPKINS has more in an in-depth look worth your time. (I’m guessing I won’t be the only person saving this story.)

We told you Friday that former Meredith executives PATRICK McCREERY and GARY BROWN have formed Glass City Talent and are acquiring Talent Dynamics. Longtime TD principal SANDRA CONNELL will continue as President of the company, with Brown serving as CEO and McCreery leading business development and serving as an advisor. Finally, WILLIAM NEGRON has been promoted to executive producer for Univision’s KMEX-TV in Los Angeles. He’s been the senior producer there, and formerly worked for KVEA-TV in Los Angeles and for television stations in both Houston and his native Puerto Rico.

She replaces TODD MOHKTARI who was promoted to GM for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Two former Meredith executives have a formed a new firm to invest in companies in the broadcast field, and their first acquisition may surprise you.

Connell

The new entity is called Glass City Talent, and its first purchase is longtime placement and coaching company Talent Dynamics. Longtime Talent Dynamics principal SANDRA CONNELL will continue as President. She formed TD 25 years ago, when it spun off from AR&D. Sandra has been involved in our business for more than 40 years and has helped countless people, both on the air and behind the scenes.

The principals of the new company are former Meredith President PATRICK McCREERY and former SVP of Content GARY BROWN.

McCreery

Patrick first joined Meredith in 2002 as a Special Projects EP at KPHO-TV in Phoenix. He moved up the ranks quickly. Among his jobs were news director and then GM for KPTV in Portland. He spent several years as VP News and Marketing before becoming President in 2018. Patrick held that job until Meredith was sold at the end of 2021. He’ll lead business development and serve as an advisor to TD.

Brown

GARY BROWN will be the CEO for Talent Dynamics. His last role at Meredith was SVP of Content but he had worked for the company several times over the years. He was a news director in several markets, was Vice President of News for Newport Television, and spent five years working as an agent. As to the “Glass City” reference in the name? McCreery and Brown grew up in Toledo, nicknamed The Glass City for its significant role in glass manufacturing. And they met while working at WTOL-TV there in the 90’s (after my time there, btw.)

JEFF ROSETTI has left Tegna’s WTHR-TV (NBC) in Indianapolis after three-plus years as news director and eleven years at the station. GM MICHAEL BROUDER sent this memo to the staff today. Jeff joined the station as its assistant ND in 2011 and was promoted to the top job in March 2019. His Linkedin page (already modified with a “Open to Work” banner) tells the rest of his background.

Obituary:

Bode

KEN BODE, a former dean of the Medill School of Journalism and longtime political reporter who worked for PBS, NBC and CNN, died June 2. He was 83 and his cause of death has not yet been revealed. He also moderated Washington Week in Review for PBS and taught at DePauw University here in Indiana. More in these obituaries from The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Another week, another obituary for a longtime Reno broadcaster. BOB CARROLL died Monday, June 6th. He first began in Reno broadcasting in 1956 in radio, moved to KOLO-TV in 1960, and the jumped to KTVN-TV in 1967, where he started the news department and worked as anchor and news director. ADAM VERDUGO has been named executive producer for The CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell. He’s currently the story editor for the broadcast but has been teamed with O’Donnell for a more than decade in a variety of roles, including when both he and O’Donnell worked at NBC. More in this news release from CBS. He’s also oared at three different CBS News Bureaus around the country, and starts his new job tomorrow.

A sexual assault lawsuit against former ABC News executive MICHAEL CORN has been dismissed by a New York State Supreme Court Judge. Details in this story from The Los Angeles Times (registration may be required). Corn had served, at different times, as EP for both World News Tonight and Good Morning America before abruptly leaving ABC in 2021. He’s now President of News for Nexstar’s News Nation.

MARC STERNFIELD gets to be closer to family as he moves to Nexstar’s KTLA-TV (CW) in Los Angeles as the station’s Director of Digital Content. Here’s the memo from KLTA ND PETE SAIERS. We told you last week that Marc was leaving Scripps’ KSTU-TV (FOX) in Salt Lake City after seven years as ND and ten at the station. And we won’t bring up our erroneous speculation last week about his next job if you won’t.

A number of news management moves to report:

In an inter-Scripps move, ANDY DELANCEY heads north to WEWS-TV WCPO-TV (ABC) in Cincinnati as its next Assistant ND. He had been an EP at WPTV (NBC) in W. Palm Beach.

After a long search, HAYDEN ELLIOTT has been promoted to Executive Producer for Gray’s WNEM-TV (CBS) in Flint/Saginaw, MI. He’s been a producer there for almost five years.

And two management moves at Weigel’s WBND-TV (ABC) in South Bend, IN:

JASON RONIMOUS is the new Assistant ND here. He had been the Chief Photographer/Operations Manager for WRTV (Scripps/ABC) in Indianapolis.

And SEAN McGARRY gets his first management job as the Morning EP. Sean had been the morning producer.

ART HOLLIDAY, who joined KSDK-TV (Tegna/NBC) in St. Louis as the weekend sports anchor in 1979, was inducted into the Missouri Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. Art became ND last year. Here’s what the station aired.

And TED LINN, who spent 16 years as news director for WANE-TV (Nexstar/CBS) in Fort Wayne, IN, before retiring in 2020, will enter the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame. CARIDAD (CARI) HERNANDEZ has been promoted to Director of Content for Tegna’s WUSA-TV (CBS) in Washington, She’s been the Assistant News Director there for the past two years and previously worked in Philadelphia, Miami, and at CNN in Atlanta. The WUSA news release fills in the rest. Cari replaces KATHY REYNOLDS who left the station last month to become ND for Scripps’ WPTV (NBC) in West Palm Beach.

Wolfe

Tegna’s second move sees NICOLE WOLFE return to Tampa as Director of Content for WTSP-TV (CBS). She’s been the news director for Scripps’ WSFL-TV where she oversaw Scripps statewide streaming network. (WSFL does not produce its own newscasts, having farmed that out to Berkshire Hathaway’s WPLG-TV (ABC). More on Nicole and her background here. It would be easy to argue that my speculation skills are no better than my sports betting picks. In Sunday’s newsletter, we speculated that KSTU-TV (Salt Lake City/Scripps/FOX) ND MARC STERNFIELD might be headed across town to become ND for Nexstar’s KTVX-TV. Right company, wrong station. WHYY-TV, Philadelphia, PA…SARAH GLOVER returns to Philadelphia to be VP/News and Civic Engagement for this public radio and TV operation. She’s currently the Managing Editor for Minnesota Public Radio’s MPR News, but earlier in her career was a staff photographer at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Sarah’s also a past two-term NABJ President.

Pottorff

KODE/KNSF-TV, Joplin, MO…BOBBIE POTTORFF returns to a news room for her first ND job. Earlier in her career she spent ten years as an Assignment Manager and Assistant ND at KOAM-TV in Joplin before leaving in 2001 for a variety of other jobs. She replaces LEISHA BEARD who’s now ND for sister Nexstar station WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, PA. Nexstar owns KSNF (NBC) affiliate, and KODE (ABC), under a JSA. KODE is owned by Mission Broadcasting

Diaz

KTAB/KRBC-TV, Abilene, TX…MANNY DIAZ joins this Nexstar operation as news director. He began his career in sports, worked in a variety of markets, and eventually became news director for another station in Abilene. Much more here. He replaces TRAVIS RUIZ who joined the Nexstar recruiting team.(Nexstar owns KTAB/CBS and operates KRBC-NBC).

KSTU-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…MARC STERNFIELD is leaving this Scripps’ owned FOX affiliate for the proverbial new job ‘to be announced soon’ (perhaps as early as tomorrow). However, his GM’s note to the staff says Marc is leaving for ‘another non-Scripps market station’. Hmm. Nexstar’s KTVX-TV has an ND opening. Let the speculation begin! He joined KSTU in 2012 as the Assistant ND and became ND in 2015. He’s also worked in Boston, Denver, and Lexington.

Bauer

KTNV-TV, Las Vegas, NV…a house cleaning at this Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate as both ND NANCY BAUER and GM CHRIS WAY left. More from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Nancy’s been HD here since 2019, coming from Scripps’ KERO-TV in Bakersfield. She spent 20 years as an ND for two stations in Los Angeles and nine months as an ND in San Diego. Way has been GM here for five years, returning to LV after 8 months as GM for Scripps’ KMTV in Omaha. Earlier in his career he worked in a digital role for KLAS-TV in Vegas among other jobs.

Nelson

WWNY-TV, Watertown, NY…after 20 years at this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate, JEFF NELSON is leaving for a PR job at a local manufacturing company. Jeff started here after graduating from Syracuse, and worked in a variety of roles including producing, reporting, anchoring, and Assistant ND. He was promoted to news director two years ago. NEWS15, the local FOX and NBC affiliate in Lafayette, LA is looking for a News Director to lead our news department. Minimum five years’ experience in news programming production, with at least two years’ experience in a leadership role.

Obituary:

JACK HOWE, a former news director in Reno and Las Vegas, died May 24. He was 93. He first served as ND for KORK-TV (now KSNV-TV) before moving to Reno as ND and also anchor for KOLO-TV. KOLO reporter ED PEARCE (a former ND at KTVN-TV in Reno) wrote this remembrance, and this obituary has more details on Jack’s life and career.

STEPHANIE SMITH joins Graham Media’s KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston as Managing Editor. She’s been working at KXAS-TV (NBC owned) in Dallas.

The new Assistant ND at WTVC-TV (Sinclair/ABC) is JONATHAN BRINES who’s had a number of jobs in his career (as have most of us.)

KRGV-TV in Weslaco, TX, has promoted producer ANA ANGUIANO to executive producer. She will also produce the 6:00 newscast.

Galvez

MARILU GALVEZ is the new general manager for WABC-TV in New York. She’s been the VP of Community Engagement and Development for the station, but comes from a news background as you will learn here. Marilu replaces CHAD MATHEWS (a former ND at WABC) who was promoted to President of the ABC owned stations earlier this year.

Fedele

Gray has transferred CHRIS FEDELE from General Manager at Toledo’s WTVG-TV (ABC) in Toledo to General Manager for WPTA/WISE-TV (ABC/NBC/CW) in Ft. Wayne. While that’s a smaller market, Chris is from the area and previously spent 14 years in a sales role at WISE. More details in this company news release.

Trevino

Tegna has named JOHN TREVINO GM for its operations in the Golden Triangle of Texas also known as Beaumont and Port Arthur) KBMT-/KJAC-TV. John most recently was GM for KDAF-TV (Nexstar/CW) in Dallas and is a former GM at KXTV-TV (Telemundo) in Dallas. Fun fact: his brother RON is an anchor at Tegna’s KHOU-TV (CBS) in Houston.
