Thursday, June 2, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Now you see them, now you don’t.

That’s the case for both the news director and general manager at Scripps’ KTNV (ABC) in Las Vegas. Both ND NANCY BAUER and GM CHRIS WAY were shown the door yesterday, according to this story in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. (registration may be required.

Bauer

Bauer

Bauer’s been the ND there since 2019, coming from Bakersfield where she ran the news department at Scripps’ KERO-TV. Before that she spent 20 years as a news director in Los Angeles at KCBS/KCAL-TV and KNBC-TV. She’s also been an ND in San Diego and for a cable operation in Palmdale, CA.

Way joined KTNV in 2017 from Scripps’ KMTV in Omaha. Earlier in his career he worked at KLAS-TV (CBS) in Vegas as Director of Digital Media.

Abouzeid

Abouzeid

Also, I made two mistakes in last week’s newsletter that need to be corrected.

First, JOE ABOUZEID will be the GM for Nexstar’s WIVB-TV in Buffalo. moving from sister Nexstar station WDTN-TV (NBC) in Dayton. I had the wrong call letters in our report. Thanks to several readers who caught the error.

Hoder

Hoder

Interestingly, no one pointed out that I misspelled SHAWN HODER’s name in reporting his move to news director for CBS o-and-o KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh from WTSP-TV (Tegna/CBS) in Tampa-St Petersburg, where he was Assistant ND. (At least I had his name right in the photo caption.) To make it up to you and Shawn, here’s a profile of him from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I’ll try and do better in this weekend’s full newsletter…and UPDATES (if any) between now and then.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tired of the big guys?

Why you don’t want to apply for the News Director job in Billings, Montana:

· You can’t use traffic as an excuse for being late to work.
· You’ll burn too many calories enjoying all the ski resorts, lakes and hiking trails.
· There are way too many breweries to choose from.

And you’ll just hate it here if professional growth, entrepreneurial opportunities, and work/life balance aren’t on your career bucket list.

Obituaries:

Lippman

Lippman

Sad news from KYTX-TV (Tegna/CBS) in Tyler, TX, where Assistant News Director ALICIA PEKEMA LIPPMAN lost her battle with cancer last Tuesday. She was just 32 year old. Alicia worked at stations in Lake Charles, LA, Baton Rouge, and Little Rock. Among the survivors are her husband DAVID LIPPMAN, an anchor at KYTX. This obituary has more.

Murphy

Murphy

TOM MURPHY, a legendary leader in our industry, died Wednesday at his home at age 96. His first TV job was running a station in Albany, NY. He helped grow Capital Cities Communications which later merged with the much larger ABC company, which, of course, was then acquired by Disney. Two obituaries: The New York Times and from one of those ABC stations, WTVD-TV in Raleigh/Durham.

Marks

Marks

STEPHEN MARKS also was involved in running TV stations, but on a much smaller level. He died May 11 at the age of 72. Stephen owned a few small TV and radio stations. Two of this stations have interesting distinctions: according to this obituary, one (WBKB-TV) in Alpena, MI, is affiliated with all four major networks, while another (KXGN-TV) is the only station in the smallest market, Glendive, MT.

Names in the News:

Alexandria JudALEX JUD has been promoted to nightside executive producer for WLS-TV, Disney/ABC’s Chicago station. She’s been the 10:00 producer for the last three years. More in this item distributed by the station. Alex has been at WLS for since 2018. She’s also worked as an executive producer for WTHR-TV (NBC) here in Indianapolis and at WNDU-TV (NBC) in South Bend, IN.

Ackermann

Steve A.

We heard this week from old friend STEVE ACKERMANN who’s taking his skills on the road again. Steve’s teaching at the University of North Texas but is spending at least part of the summer as an interim ND for Nexstar’s WETM-TV in Elmira, NY. Many of you know Steve, whose career includes ND positions in Cincinnati and with Belo’s now defunct Texas Cable News in Dallas and a long run with CBS in a variety of jobs.

General Manager News and Notes:

Several general manager moves this week. TWO of those moves (both at Nexstar stations) involve former news directors who’re moving up the GM ladder.

Danielson

Danielson

MARK DANIELSON proves you can go home again as he returns to Salt Lake City as general manager for KTVX-TV, Nexstar’s ABC affiliate. Mark worked there early in his career before moving around to (among others) two ND jobs in Idaho and two GM jobs for News-Press and Gazette stations. Mark’s note to me explains why this move means so much to him and his family…and proves that this business is pretty small.

Abouzeid

Abouzeid

JOE ABOUZEID moves within Nexstar to take over the company’s Buffalo station, WIVB-TV (CBS). He’s spent the last ten years as general manager for Nexstar’s WDTN-TV (NBC) in Dayton. Joe moved to Dayton from Providence, where he had been news director for WPRI-TV from 2005-2012, and worked as Managing Editor and Assistant ND before that. He replaces BRIEN KENNEDY who is retiring.

The final Nexstar move finds JUDSON BECK staying in cold weather country as he moves from Nexstar’s operations in LaCrosse and Eau Claire, WI, to Green Bay, where he will oversee both WFRV-TV (CBS) in Green Bay and WJMN-TV (Independent) in Marquette, MI.

MUCH more detail about all three people in this news release.

German

German

DAVE GERMAN leaves Scripps’ KMTV (CBS) after just eight months as general manager to return to Texas as GM for Scripps’ KXXV/KHRD-TV, ABC affiliates that serve the Waco, Temple, and Bryan, TX markets. Before moving to Omaha, Dave was a station manager in Odessa, TX, and also worked in Savannah, GA, and Anchorage. More in this news release from Scripps.

Greetings:

Like my waistline, the number of open ND jobs inches slightly higher this week, with 35 stations on our list of openings.

That’s because there are FIVE new ND openings while another THREE jobs were filled. ONE of the new openings is in market #1, another is at a CBS o-and-o, while another CBS owned station filled its vacant ND job.

THREE of the above mentioned 35 stations are advertising those openings among our EIGHT paid help wanted ads.

TWO obituaries this week, one a veteran GM who spent much of his career at ABC stations, and another of a former CBS correspondent who finished his career reporting for a special projects unit in Houston.

In Names in the News, a former Wyoming news director is retiring, but you know him for another job. A former BNC producer gets a new job and more.

We’ll see you sometime next weekend depending on the Indy 500 goes!

May 15, 2022

Wednesday, May 18, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Our last THREE UPDATES have involved women who were once Assistant News Directors at CBS o-and-o’s.

TWO were promoted to news director this month.

ONE, who was promoted to ND in 2020, left her job.

Baynes

Baynes

Today’s news is good, though, for MARY BAYNES, who’s been upped to VP/News Director at CBS’s KOVR/KMAX-TV in Sacramento. She’s been the Assistant ND there since 2019 in her second stint at the station. In between, she worked for CBS’s KCBS-KCAL-TV in Los Angeles as an executive producer. She’s also worked in Salinas.

More in this news release from CBS.

Mary replaces MIKE DELLO STRITTO who was promoted to VP/ND for the aforementioned KCBS/KCAL in Los Angeles last February.

The other two women featured in our recent UPDATES?

Yesterday we told you that JESSI MILLER BRADLEY has left WBZ-TV in Boston after 18 months as ND and almost 25 at the station.

And last week we reported that LISA WHITE had been promoted to VP/ND at KPIX-TV. She’s a 22 year veteran of the station.

There WILL be a test later.

We’ll be back Sunday with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, May 17, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another change in the news director’s office at a CBS o-and-o, this one involving an employee who had been at the station almost 25 years. And a pending sale of a group takes another step forward.

Bradley

Bradley

JESSI MILLER BRADLEY has left CBS’s WBZ-TV in Boston after a little more than 1 1/2 years as news director. She first joined ‘BZ in 1997 as a producer. She was promoted to Executive Producer in 2019, and news director in October, 2020, after JOHNNY GREEN JR. moved to New York as VP of News Services for CBS News. He’s now GM at WCBS-TV in New York.

And, Tegna shareholders have approved the merger of the company with an affiliate of Standard General. Details here.

More this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ***

Greetings:

We have LOTS of changes in this week’s newsletter.

There are FOUR new ND openings.

There are FIVE ND jobs filled (though, for reasons we explain, we’re only going to tell you who filled THREE of them.

That leaves 32 stations on our always unofficial list of station with ND openings. THREE of those stations are advertising those openings among our EIGHT paid help wanted ads. And those ads range from the largest market to smaller ones, and include an ad for an interesting job at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

There’s an obituary for a legendary network news executive whose son followed him to network news. There’s ONE new GM appointment, and CBS creates an investigative unit at its new innovation lab in Dallas.

And I still have TWO tickets available for this year’s Indianapolis 500 (Sunday, May 29th). They are in the Tower Terrace on the front straight, behind the pits. $120 each (face value). Email me if you are interested: rick@rickgevers.com

RICHARD WALD, a longtime news executive who served as President of NBC News and a top exec at ABC News, died Friday. He was 92 and had suffered a stroke in his sleep earlier in the week. The tributes were many: here are stories from Variety, NBC News, and ABC News. He began his career in newspapers and later taught at Columbia University. His son, JONATHAN, has worked for NBC, CNN, and CNBC.

Names in the News:

CBS has named FOUR investigative newspeople to be based at its innovation news lab in Dallas based at o-and-o KTVT-TV. Among the hires are veteran reporter STEPHEN STOCK, most recently at NBC’s KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco, and longtime Denver investigative producer NICOLE VAP, who left Tegna’s KUSA-TV (NBC) a few weeks ago. More in this news release from CBS. (Because we here at the Rick Gevers Newsletter are Working for You and On Your Side, we counted the number of words in the first sentence so you don’t have to: 63!)

May 8, 2022

Thursday, May 12, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A long vacant ND opening at a CBS o-and-o has been filled with a veteran station employee.

White

White

Congratulations to LISA WHITE who has been promoted to VP/News Director for CBS owned KPIX-TV in San Francisco. She’s been the Assistant News Director there for 22 years. Lisa earlier worked at KRON-TV in San Francisco for ten years, as well as six years working a producer in Seattle.

Details in this news release from CBS/Paramount.

Lisa replaces MARK NEERMAN who left the station in early January.

In fairness, there was a GM change after Mark left which undoubtedly slowed the search.

More this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Two ND changes in medium markets to share with you today.

Reynolds

Reynolds

KATHY REYNOLDS leaves WUSA-TV (CBS/Tegna-soon-to-be-Standard-Media) in Washington, where she was News Content Director, for sunny Florida and Scripps WPTV (NBC), where her title will be News Director. This staff memo from GM BILL SIEGEL has more details. Kathy’s a former ND in Toledo, Flint, and Portland, ME.

At WPTV, she replaces NICOLE HOGENSEN who left in March to return to her native Ohio as ND for Sinclair’s WSYX/WTTE-TV (ABC/FOX) in Columbus. Nicole spent six years as news director (and eleven years) at WPTV.

Woodard

Woodard

Meanwhile, family reasons have caused JEFF WOODARD to step down as news director for Tegna’s WGRZ-TV (NBC). Jeff just returned to WGRZ in March after six years away. He was the news director there for seven years (part of his 18 years at the station) before leaving in 2016 to become marketing director for SUNY-Fredonia. Jeff had replaced ATHAN KOMPOS who left last year after 20 years, four as ND.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers
**** ***** ****

Lots more ND activity this week than in the past few, with FOUR new openings and FOUR new NDs to tell you about.

There’s an unfortunate back story to one of those openings, as you’ll see below.

We now have 34 stations on our list of openings. TWO of those open ND jobs are among our FOUR paid ads.

There is ONE obituary for the ND of a PBS station in Florida. And, to the best of my knowledge, NO GM changes this week.

Names in the News brings details of a new RTDNA survey with a disturbing trend, a veteran newsman takes a new job as a consultant and we have a few managers on the move.

One personal note, if you will. I have FOUR tickets available for this year’s Indianapolis 500 (Sunday, May 29th). They are in the Tower Terrace section along the front straight, behind the pits. $120 each (face value). Email me if you are interested: rick@rickgevers.com

Have a great week.
