August 25, 2024

Greetings:

For the second week in a row, FOUR jobs were filled this week, with ONE new opening.

That shrinks our list of open ND jobs to 35.

No help wanted ads, but new copy from our longtime supporter Stephen Arnold Music, and Sciline has some free offerings to help your content.

We’re sorry to report the death of a longtime New Mexico general manager. We have details about the passing of a retired CBS News correspondent whose son followed him in to our business. And we have the full obituary for JOHN LANSING, including a suggestion for those wishing to make a memorial contribution as well as more details about his life and career.

No new GMs this week…at least that I am aware of.

And TWO items in Names in the News: A new President for ABC News, and we’ll tell you about a longtime ND and anchor who’ll be away from her job while she battles breast cancer

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Marsoun

KWQC-TV, Moline, IL….she’s back! BETH MARSOUN is once again ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate. She was ND there until 2014, when she left for a series of jobs outside of television. Beth returned to the station in February as EP of Quad Cities Live, a 3:00 PM program. You can track those out of TV jobs on her Linkedin page. She replaces ANNE HUGHES who left after 2 1/2 years as ND.

Lopez

KYTX-TX, Tyler, TX…MARANGELI LOPEZ is the new news director for this Tegna owned CBS affiliate. She’s also the evening anchor there and previously worked in Albany, NY, but grew up near Tyler. Marangeli replaces MATEO GAMBOA who left in January to return to Dallas as the Assistant News Director of Mornings for CBS owned KTVT-TV.

Richard

KATC-TV, Lafayette, LA…DAMIEN RICHARD has been promoted to ND for this Scripps owned ABC station. Details in this memo from GM SEAN TRCALEK. Damien’s been here for eight years, most recently as the Assistant ND. Damien succeeds NICHOLE CYRPIAN who left in July to become Exec. Dir. at the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center at her alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi.

Curtis

WTVY-TV, Dothan, AL…perhaps retirement didn’t agree with longtime Dothan broadcaster KEN CURTIS. We told you in 2017 that he was retiring from WTVY where he’d been a senior reporter. Now he’s back as ND. Ken had also been an ND for WDHN-TV in Dothan. At WTVY, he replaces WHITNEY ARGENBRIGHT who left in February after a year as ND and 2 1/2 as the AND.

New News Director Openings:

WOAI-TV, San Antonio, TX…MICHELLE GERMANO has left this Sinclair owned NBC affiliate after a little more than 18 months as ND. A San Antonio native, Michelle tells me she plans to stay in the area. Before WOAI, Michelle was the ND for WTVD-TV (ABC owned) in Raleigh/Durham. She also was an ND in Tucson and worked in Houston and Corpus Christi, TX.

Obituaries:

Anderson

BILL ANDERSON, longtime general manager for Nexstar’s KRQE-TV (CBS) in Albuquerque, NM, died this week. While he was fighting liver cancer, he died of an infection. He’s been GM here since 1991 and was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle in 2022. This tribute video has details on his background, lists his fomer markets and his brief acceptance speech. I could not find anything about his passing on the station’s website.

Jones

Retired CBS News Correspondent PHIL JONES died at his Florida home over the weekend. He was 87. He retired from CBS in 2001 after 32 years, where he was known as one of “Cronkite’s Kids.” The network remembered him in this story. He leaves behind his daughter PAM, and his son PAUL, now an anchor in Lexington and a former sportscaster in Dallas, Nashville, and Indianapolis.

Lansing

And one update on a passing we first brought you last week….the complete obituary for long time broadcaster JOHN LANSING who died unexpectedly on August 14th. You can read it here. John was 67. The obituary has great details on his career and family life, and provides a suggestion for anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution. Services will be held a later date and we’ll let you know when.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Almin K.

ABC News named a new President. ALMIN KARAMEHMEDOVIC (common spelling) has been the Senior EP for World News Tonight. He first joined the network in 1998 as a freelance video editor in London. Here’s the story from ABC News. Almin replaces KIM GODWIN who left in May after three years. You may remember that Kim’s a former local news director in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Cleveland.

Bell

Please join me in wishing WJHG-TV (Panama City, FL) news director and anchor DONNA BELL well in her fight with breast cancer. She bid her viewers a temporary farewell in revealing her diagnosis, discovered on what would have been her mother’s 80th birthday. Her Mom died of cancer. She offers good advice for all in that video which is worth watching. And if you want to wish her well, click here for her email address. Donna’s been at WJHG (now owned by Gray) for 30 years.

General Manager News and Notes:

No GM changes this week, to my knowledge.

August 18, 2024

Greetings:

We have a few more details about the death of former ND, GM, and corporate executive JOHN LANSING who died earlier this week at the too young age of 67. That’s in our obituary section below.

Another important story is in Names in the News, also below. Shreveport police will NOT prosecute former KTBS-TV news director and anchor BILL LUNN on charges of possible inappropriate contact with a minor.

And the National Murrow winners were released this week. That’s also in Names in the News below.

As to the typical top of our report, FOUR jobs were filled this week, while TWO new positions opened up.

That shrinks our list of open ND jobs increases to 37.

We welcome back HELLER WEATHER as an advertiser, check out his ad just below.

And Sciline has a number of briefings and interview opportunities, all FREE, including one Monday afternoon.

And there’s ONE GM hire. He’s adding a second station to his job, which seems like a growing trend.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Tim K.

WXYZ/WMYD-TV, Detroit, MI…this Scripps owned ABC affiliate wasted little time in filling its open ND job by promoting TIM KOCHENDERFER. He’s worked there for 22 years, most recently as the Assistant ND. More in this note from GM MIKE MURRI, where you’ll learn about Tim’s unusual (and successful) hobby. He replaces KENNAN OLIPHANT who left last month to become VP/News & Station Manager for WWJ-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Detroit.

Mulligan

KSHB/KMCI-TV, Kansas City, MO…another Scripps station, another new boss. JEFF MULLIGAN returns to this NBC affiliate as Station Manager/ND. More from Regional VP KATHLEEN CHOAL. Jeff worked here as a dayside EP about six years ago but more recently has been the ND at WSIL-TV in Carbondale, IL. He replaces MATT WAGGONER who is (according to his Linkedin Page) is now VP of Growth and Brand for GreenUP Wealth in Overland Park, KS, a KC suburb.

Rafferty

KPAX-TV, Missoula, MT…a busy week for Scripps as it named a third new ND with the promotion of EP MELISSA RAFFERTY to the top job here. She’s currently the EP and has worked at this CBS affiliate for almost 21 years. More about Meliisa and her career in her station bio. She replaces KEITH HATTEN who left in July to become ND for Tegna’s WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville after about three years as ND here.

Hodge

WZMQ-TV, Marquette, MI…KEVIN HODGE adds ND duties in addition to his role as anchor/producer for this Lilly Broadcasting owned CBS/MeTVstation. Kevin came to WZMQ in May after two years as ND and anchor at WBKB-TV in Alpena, MI. He succeeds TRENT BAILEY, who left after nearly two years to take a communications position at the University of Michigan.

New News Director Openings:

WSIL-TV, Carterville, IL…we told you above that JEFF MULLIGAN is returning to KSHB/KMCI-TV in Kansas City as Station Manager and ND. He worked for this Allen Media Broadcasting for about 2 1/2 years.

Taylor

WFFF/WVNY-TV, Burlington, VT…ROB TAYLOR is moving with Nexstar to become the next Assistant ND for WSYR-TV in Syracuse. That station’s GM, BILL EVANS, sent this note to the staff. He’s been the ND here for about three years, spent 18 years at two stations (WLS-TV and WFLD-TV) in Chicago. and has worked in Jackson, MS, Memphis, and Greenville, SC.

Obituary:

We told you Friday that JOHN LANSING, who held many significant jobs, died at the age of 67. New this edition: A Washington Post story which includes more details. And if you missed it, here’s the NPR story we shared Friday. John was chief executive at NPR until earlier this year. There’s still no cause of death, though John did have heart surgery in 2021.

He’s survived by his wife and four children and our sympathy to them.

One correction: our Friday UPDATE said he died in Minnesota. He actually died at his home in Wisconsin.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

RTDNA named the National Murrow Award winners. Here’s an overview of the winners and the complete list is here. Among the winners, my friend and former WTOL-TV (Toledo, OH) intern and employee, CBS’s STEVE HARTMAN, for another win for Excellence in Writing.

Lunn

Authorities in Shreveport, LA, have decided NOT to arrest or prosecute former KTBS-TV anchor and news director BILL LUNN. He resigned from the station in June after police began in investigation into possible inappropriate communication with a juvenile. Two stories: First, from KTBS, and the second from The Shreveport Times.

Following the leads of both ABC and NBC, CBS plans to add a third hour of CBS Mornings this fall. MANY details (including talent) are still to come, according to this report from The Hollywood Reporter.

And we rarely report on radio developments, but this story about the demise of all news WCBS-AM radio in New York caught my eye

General Manager News and Notes:

Kizer

Just ONE GM change this week as Tegna named JIM KIZER to oversee WOI/KCWI-TV (ABC/CW) in Des Moines. He will continue to serve as GM for WQAD-TV (ABC) in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. That seems to be part of a growing trend of one GM overseeing multiple markets. More in the Tegna news release.

Friday, August 16th, 2024:

Greetings:

Terribly sad news this afternoon.

Lansing

Veteran broadcaster JOHN LANSING died earlier this week at a vacation home in Wisconsin.

He was 67. No cause of death has yet been reported.

Details in this lengthy story from NPR where John last worked.

We’ll have more details in our full report this weekend, also with some much happier news…a new news director in Detroit.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

It may not be the busiest week of ND changes, but we have a few and some very interesting items in Names in the News.

NO jobs were filled this week, while ONE new position opened up. And we can now tell you the new job for a Green Bay ND whose departure we reported last week. Our list of open ND jobs increases to 39.

We have TWO ads for very similar…but different…jobs in Houston. Both Steven Arnold Music and Octopus have ads this week. To explore more about Octopus Newsroom and their cutting-edge NRCS showcased at TAB 2024, visit their ad below for in-depth information and updates.

And Sciline has a number of briefings and interview opportunities, all FREE.

NO obituaries this week and NO GM changes (that I know of).

But leave it to CBS News and Stations to provide fodder for Names in the News with a whole raft of promotions. Also in Names in the News, a legendary industry publication is going away, CNN loses its media writer, who’s starting a newsletter (imagine that) and a veteran New Orleans newsman is leaving after 42 years but his farewell note is worth a read.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

NO hires this week, to the best of my knowledge.

New News Director Opening:

Scott

WGBA-TV, Green Bay, WI…we first reported last week that RYAN SCOTT is leaving this Scripps owned NBC station but we now know he’s staying within Scripps and returning to WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee as Managing Editor. Here’s the note from ND TIM VETSCHER. Ryan joined WGBA as ND in late 2021 and added Station Manager duties last December. But he’d earlier spent 20 years at WTMJ in a variety of roles, beginning as a director.

Ryan becomes the FOURTH former (or current ND) housed at WTMJ. In addition to current ND Tim Vetscher, former WTMJ ND JEFF KIERNAN’s office is at WTMJ in his new role as VP/News for Scripps, and former WITI-TV (Milwaukee/FOX) ND JIM WILSON is the executive reporter at WTMJ.

Marshall

KTVZ/KFXO-TV, Bend, OR….CATHY MARSHALL will leave this News Press and Gazette owned NBC/FOX duopoly once her replacement has been hired. She’s been ND here since December, 2022 and first joined the station as a morning anchor in early 2022. Cathy’s worked for CNN, and for stations in Boston, Seattle, New Haven and for KGW-TV in Portland, OR, for eleven years before joining KTVZ.

Another week, and another list of changes at CBS News.

Roark

Former News Director and General Manager ADRIENNE ROARK becomes President of Editorial and News Gathering for CBS News and Stations and will also oversee CBS owned stations in New York and Boston. JENNIFER MITCHELL has been named Presdient of Stations and Digital for CBS News and Stations and will oversee the rest of the owned stations.

But wait! There’s MUCH more as you’ll learn in the CBS news release.

Readers of a certain age will remember anxiously waiting every week for the print edition of Broadcasting to arrive in the (postal!) mail. In the pre-internet and email eras, THAT’s how you found about job changes and openings.

No more.

The company announced this week that it is closing its (no longer a weekly but monthly) magazine (now Broadcasting and Cable) and emailed newsletter and introduce some new products.

CNN’s media writer and author of its Reliable Sources newsletter, OLIVER DARCY, has left the network and is launching his own newsletter.

But he’s going to charge for his. 🙂

(Subtle, right?)

TOM PLANCHET is leaving WWL-TV in New Orleans after 42 years and a variety of jobs, most recently launching its digital operation. It’s New Orleans, so he saw a lot of remarkable stories during his tenure there. Take a minute (or two) to read his recap and farewell note.

August 4, 2024

Greetings:

Always a pleasure to see some of you at a convention, including this week at NABJ in Chicago, which welcomed record attendance. And before you ask, I did not attend Wednesday’s session with former President Trump which generated so much news coverage.

Perhaps because of the convention, it was a slow week for ND changes.

Just ONE job was filled while ONE position opened up. So, our list of open ND jobs stays at 38.

We have TWO ads for very similar…but different…jobs in Houston. Check the ads out below.

A reminder, too, if you’re going to the TAB show outside Austin this week, visit the Octopus display to learn more about the latest innovations in newsroom technology. More in the ad below.

TWO obituaries this week, one of a man who went from a reporter-commentator role to become the longest serving mayor in Seattle, and another of a man who spent a remarkable 53 years at one station in a variety of roles.

Sinclair and Scripps both named new GMs in to 40 markets this week.

Perhaps the biggest TV news this week was the new anchor lineup for the CBS Evening News. We have new stories on that change. Also in Names in the News, Nexstar has asked a judge to dismiss lawsuits filed by TWO former news managers, and we have an interesting column on the challenges facings GMs in 2025.

All that and more below.

Obituaries:

Two broadcasters who were legends in their markets have died.

CHARLIE ROYER, a former reporter and commentator at KING-TV in Seattle, died at 84. But he’s perhaps better known as the longest serving mayor in Seattle’s history. More in this detailed obituary from The Seattle Times.

And SEAN O’FLAHERTY died this week, losing his battle to cancer at the age of 74. He spent 53 years working for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee where he began as a reporter and then transitioned to a behind the scene role. That lead a former colleague to say that Sean could do everything from turning the transmitter on to reporting breaking news. WTMJ honored him with this story.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Our Thursday UPDATE brought many of you (from what I was told at NABJ) the first word of the new anchor lineup at the CBS Evening News. If you missed the story, here’s the link. NEW THIS EDITION: A message from WENDY McMAHON, President and CEO of CBS News and Stations explaining the move, and another one from BILL OWENS who will be the supervising producer of the new broadcast.

Lawyers for WOOD-TV (NBC) in Grand Rapids, MI, and its parent company, Nexstar Media, have asked a federal judge to dismiss lawsuits filed by former news director STANTON TANG and former assistant ND AMY FOX. The two were fired last year over a memo about coverage of Pride Week.

In his latest column for TVNewsCheck, former general manager and consultant HANK PRICE says 2025 will be a tough year for General Managers and says it’s important for them to demonstrate their leadership qualities. There are lots of challenges ahead for TV stations next year. Hank’s column is worth your time.

General Manager News and Notes:

DEAN DITMER, a one-time GM for Tegna’s KPNX-TV (NBC) in Phoenix, is headed north to Portland, OR, where he’ll take over as GM for Sinclair’s KATU-TV (ABC). It’s a return to Sinclair for Dean, who earlier in his career ran the company’s WKEF/WRGT-TV (ABC/FOX) in Dayton.

Cook

Scripps has named JOHN COOK VP/GM of its Las Vegas station, KTNV-TV (ABC). He’s been senior director of sales for the company’s WXYZ-TV (also ABC) in Detroit for three years and earlier worked in a variety of sales positions for Graham Media’s WDIV-TV (NBC) in Detroit.
