The list of open news director jobs in New York City…which stood at THREE just a few weeks ago…is now down to ONE as a second generation news manager gets a new job.

That’s because Nexstar has filled its opening at WPIX-TV (CW) by hiring NICOLE TINDIGLIA, currently the Assistant News Director at news director-less WCBS-TV. She’s been the AND there since 2013 and has been at this CBS o-and-o since 1998 in a variety of jobs. Here’s the news release.

Her last name will ring a bell with some of our more seasoned readers, who will remember her father, RON TINDIGLIA, who was named ND for WABC-TV in 1976 when he was 29 years old. Ron died in 1997 (lung cancer) when he was just 51. This New York Times obituary detailed his long career which included stints as VP/News for the CBS owned stations and station manager for both WCBS-TV in New York and KNXT-TV (now KCBS-TV) in Los Angeles.

KING/KONG-TV, Seattle, WA…our UPDATE Tuesday told you that JULIE WOLFE is moving within Tegna to become the ND here for this NBC/independent duopoly. More here. Julie’s been the ND for WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville since 2018 and’s been with Tegna since 2006, working in Buffalo and Atlanta. She replaces PETE SAIERS who left earlier this year to become the ND for Nexstar’s KTLA-TV in Los Angeles.

WTIC-TV, Hartford, CT…for the second consecutive week news of a new ND in Hartford. This time it’s RICHARD WASHINGTON III, also promoted within Tegna. He joins this FOX affiliate from WCNC-TV (NBC) in Charlotte where he was the Assistant ND. Richard replaces LIZ GREY GODBOUT who is retiring after four years here with the Hartford hat trick on her mantle: she’s also been an ND at WVIT-TV and WTNH-TV.

WKRG-TV, Mobile, AL…GENE KIRKCONNELL will be the next ND for this CBS affiliate, coming from another Nexstar CBS station, WRBL-TV in Columbus, GA. More from the WKRG website. His Linkedin page has his complete background, including an eight year run as a GM for WVTM-TV in Birmingham, where he had a supervisory role over (then) sister Media General station WKRG. Gene replaces CHRIS BEST who left the station in April after 4 1/2 years as ND.

KULR-TV, Billings, MT…PHILLIP OHNEMUS is leaving this Cowles Media station where he has been the news director since 2015. (If this sounds familiar, he announced last year he was leaving and then reversed that decision the job was posted briefly last year during a contract negotiation.) He’s also worked in Birmingham, AL, in a variety of roles, starting with reporter, then as a maintenance engineer, and then as a producer. Phillip tells me his new job will be announced soon, and we’ll share it with you when it is.

Landis

PETER LANDIS, a former news director and managing editor for New York’s NY1, died Wednesday after he suffered a stroke while undergoing what was supposed to be minor surgery. He was 72 and retired seven years ago. The station remembered its former leader in this story.

Plourde

DAVID PLOURDE, a 40 year veteran of the Idaho news scene, and most recently the assignment editor for KIFI-TV in Idaho Falls, died Wednesday. He’d spent ten years at KIFI, which paid tribute to him in this story. At David’s request, there will be no service.

MICHAEL CORN, the former executive producer for ABC’s Good Morning America, has been named President of News for Nexstar’s News Nation, based in Chicago. A 19 year veteran of ABC, he spent seven years as EP of GMA and earlier was the EP for World News Tonight and World News Weekend. More details in this Nexstar news release.

An update on former KSAN/KLST-TV (San Angelo, TX) news director DAVID WAGNER. We told you three weeks ago that he’d left the station. According to his Linkedin page, he’s taken a new job as the Bar Manager for the Bentwood Country Club and Estates in San Angelo. David spent ten years as ND at the stations in this second stint there.

CHRIS RUFFIN joins Gray’s WTVM-TV (ABC) in Columbus, GA, as the executive producer. He’s been a producer at sister Gray station WBTV (CBS) in Charlotte.

Longtime newsman ANDREW VREES moves to the general manager’s chair at Hearst’s WMUR-TV (ABC) in Manchester, NH, a station where he was once ND. Andrew moved from WMUR to Hearst’s WCVB-TV (ABC) in Boston as ND, and then on to a corporate news role. He replaces another former newsman, JEFF BARTLETT, who was GM here for 20 years.

SHEILA OLIVER moves from one FOX o-and-o to another as she moves west to become GM for KCPQ-TV in Seattle. She’s been the GM for the company’s KMSP-TV in Minneapolis for the past six years first joining as VP/Sales in 2003. A flurry of moves prompts this almost-at-the-end-of-the-week UPDATE. Most will be very brief, and I promise more on each in our weekend newsletter.

But we’ll give you the most detail on a person that it is probably best known among our readers. ANDREW VREES returns to his native New Hampshire as GM of Hearst’s WMUR-TV (ABC) in Manchester. Andrew is a long time Hearst employee, who since 2016 has been VP/News for the company. He’s also been a news director for two of the company’s stations, including WMUR. More details about his background in this news release.

One other major market GM shuffle finds SHEILA OLIVER moving from Fox’s KMSP-TV in Minneapolis to the company’s Seattle stations, KCPQ/KZJO-TV. Sheila’s worked for KMSP for 18 years, the last six as GM. More about her background in her already updated Linkedin page. Sheila replaces PAM PEARSON who was the GM at KCPQ for (according to her Linkedin page) from 1999 until, apparently, this morning and announced her retirement on Thursday.

On to the lightning round…

MICHAEL CORN, most recently the EP for Good Morning America, has been named President of Nexstar’s News Nation.

RICHARD WASHINGTON III moves from Assistant ND at Tegna’s WCNC-TV (NBC) in Charlotte to ND for the company’s WTIC-TV (FOX) in Hartford, CT.

And veteran broadcaster GENE KIRKCONNELL is the new ND for Nexstar’s WKRG-TV (CBS) in Mobile, leaving Nexstar’s WRBL-TV (CBS) in Columbus, GA. Interesting twist: earlier in his career, while GM of (then) Media General’s WVTM-TV in Birmingham, Gene had a supervisory role over WKRG.

Once again, a news director lands a new job via an inter-company promotion.

Today it’s JULIE WOLFE, who’s headed to Seattle to become the next ND for Tegna’s KING/KONG-TV (NBC/independent). Here’s the news release.

For the past three years, Julie’s been the ND for Tegna’s WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville. She’s been with Tegna since 2006, when she joined the company as a multimedia journalist at WGRZ-TV in Buffalo before moving to WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

Julie began her career as a reporter in Cheyenne, WY.

Her profile on the WHAS website provides a lot more information about her background and an interesting anecdote about what sparked her interest in TV.

She replaces PETE SAIERS who left earlier this year to become the ND for Nexstar’s KTLA-TV in Los Angeles.

WVIT-TV, Hartford, CT…the other item in Monday’s Update was the appointment of TRACY DAVIS as Vice President of News for NBC owned WVIT-TV. Here’s the news release. She’s a former news director at WDJT-TV (CBS) in Milwaukee and WFFF/WVNY-TV in Burlington, VT. At WVIT, she replaces JANET HUNDLEY who left in April after 2 1/2 years as ND.

KARD/KTVE-TV, W. Monroe, LA…we’re a little tardy in reporting that RICK BOONE is now the news director for this operation. (Nexstar owns KARD and operates KTVE for…let’s say it all together…Mission Broadcasting.) Rick first joined the station last August as the executive producer. He was briefly an ND in Bowling Green, KY, and has worked on air in a number of markets both small and large.

He replaces MICHAEL THOMPSON who is now the Senior Public Affairs/News Producer for Arkansas PBS. Michael left earlier this year after less than a year as ND.

New News Director Openings:

WNEM-TV, Flint/Saginaw, MI…as we told you above, KARIN MOVESIAN is moving from this Meredith CBS affiliate to another Meredith CBS affiliate, KCTV in Kansas City, as ND. She spent three years as ND here.

WDTV, Clarksburg, WV…MICHAEL BALDWIN is leaving this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate after about a year on the job for a new position to be announced soon. Before WDTV, Michael was the Saturday evening anchor and nightside reporter for sister Gray station WXIX-TV (FOX) in Cincinnati. He’s also worked in Cleveland and several other markets as you’ll read here.

Obituaries:

Kay

DICK KAY, perhaps best known as a longtime political reporter for WMAQ-TV (NBC/Chicago), but a former ND for WFRV-TV in Green Bay, WI, died Thursday of a fatal brain hemhorrage. He was 84. His real name was RICHARD SNODGRASS but changed it to Kay when he started dating his future wife, whose name was Kay. He led an interesting life, detailed in an interesting obituary.

Greenwald

ARTHUR GREENWALD, a former executive producer at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, died April 30th of end stage renal failure. He was 68. After leaving KDKA, he worked as a media consultant and columnist for TV News Check. He had an impish sense of humor, once setting up a spoof Facebook page to raise money for the Trump Presidential Library…at the Federal Prison in Leavenworth, KS. Other examples in this obituary.

McCreary

BILL McCREARY, a pioneering Black journalist who rose to VP of WNYW-TV in New York, died April 4th at the age of 87. He suffered from a neurological disease for many years. Bill joined WNYW (then WNEW-TV) as a reporter in 1967, when there were few minorities on TV. The New York Times printed this lengthy obituary.

Names in the News:

Award season continues with the release of the National Headliner Awards. Awarded by the Press Club of Atlantic City, it’s one of the oldest award conceptions. The complete list of winners…including a number of local TV stations…can be found here.

Speaking of awards, old friend BILL LORD reached out this week hoping we would share information about the National Press Club awards. Many of you know Bill, who was a GM, ND, and network correspondent (and now author) before he retired. Bill tells me he’s trying to get more local TV stations involved in this prestigious award. A former news director was one of eight people arrested in Portland, OR, on charges of commercial sex solicitation. MATTHEW ZELKIND is a former ND in Nashville, Las Vegas, and Wichita and has worked in Los Angeles, Denver, San Luis Obispo, Medford, OR and Colorado Springs. The former speaker of the Oregon House was also arrested in the sting. More here.

ROBB ATKINSON, a former ND and CNN NewsSource sales executive, has a new job. He returns to Portland, ME, where he had once been the ND for WGME-TV (Sinclair/CBS) in a PR role for an insurance company that specializes in worker’s compensation cases. More here. Robb was also an ND in Knoxville and Wilmington, NC.

JIM ROSE has been named GM for Nexstar’s KRON-TV in San Francisco. We told you a few weeks ago that Jim was leaving his GM post at Tegna’s KING/KONG-TV (NBC/My Network) in Seattle for a new opportunity. He had been the GM in Seattle for about five years and had worked in Salt Lake City and for Blair in New York. More about his new job in this news release from Nexstar.

Another news manager becomes a GM as JULIE EISENMAN has been promoted to GM for Tegna’s WNEP-TV (ABC) in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA. It’s a return to Pennsylvania for Julie, who started on the assignment desk in Pittsburgh and later worked as an ND in Erie. She’s currently Director of Content for Tegna’s WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC and earlier was an ND in Savannah, GA. That does NOT create a news management opening at WLTX. SHARRANDA NEAL remains the ND there

STEVE DANT is retiring after 18 years as general manager for Nexstar’s KXRM/KXTU-TV in Colorado Springs, CO. KXRM is the FOX affiliate, while KXTU is a CW station. Steve previously was the GM of a station in Oregon.

Two multi-time news directors got new jobs today.

   Davis

TRACY DAVIS moves within NBC to become the next news director for WVIT-TV in Hartford. She’s currently the Assistant ND for NBC’s Chicago o-and-o, WMAQ-TV. Here’s the news release announcing her hire. Tracy’s a former news director at WDJT-TV in Milwaukee and WFFF/WVNY-TV in Burlington, VT. She replaces JANET HUNDLEY who left in April after 2 1/2 years as ND.

Movesian

Another promotion within the same company finds KARIN (cq) MOVESIAN returning to Missouri as the next news director for Meredith’s (and likely soon to be Gray’s) KCTV (CBS). Here’s the staff memo from GM CHARLIE HENRICH. She’s leaving Meredith’s (also soon to be Gray’s) WNEM-TV (CBS) in Flint-Saginaw, MI, where she’s been the ND for the last three years. Before that, she was the ND at KSDK-TV (Tegna/NBC) in St. Louis, where she had earlier worked for KMOV-TV. Karin’s extensive work history is here. At KCTV, she replaces SCOTT FLANNIGAN who left the station in April after nine months as ND.

Ed is going to sister now-owned-by-Quincy-Media-but-in-the-process-of-being-acquired-by-Allen-Media © station WREX-TV in Rockford, IL, where he’ll be the interim GM. Nexstar has named ANDY ALFORD President of Broadcasting. He’ll replace the retiring TIM BUSCH. Andy joined Nexstar when Nexstar bought Media General. He had been GM for Media General’s WFLA-TV in Tampa. More in the company’s news release. Andy has also been a GM in Atlanta and Albany, NY, and has worked in Orlando, FL, Syracuse, NY and Rochester, NY.

Morgan

Earlier, we teased an update on JOSH MORGAN who is leaving his job as GM for WREX-TV (Quincy but being bought by Gray) in Rockford, IL. He’s been named Director of Digital Media at WGCL-TV (Meredith but being bought by Gray) in Atlanta. Josh, a former ND at WREX, told me he’s making the move for family reasons. His wife, KRISTIN CROWLEY, recently took an investigative reporter position at WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

Two other GM moves:

BILL JORN is retiring as general manager for Nexstar’s KVEO-TV in Brownsville, TX. He’s been the GM at KVEO since 2006 and had earlier served as a GM at stations in McAllen and Harlingen, TX.

And ELLIOTT MOORE will be the next General Manager for Tegna’s KYTX-TV, the CBS affiliate in Tyler, TX, Elliott’s been with Tegna since 2018, first as sponsorship and project manager for WFAA-TV, (ABC) in Dallas and more recently as the local sales manager for KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis. A Sinclair promotion sends a Utah news director across country to a new job.

  Garber

MIKE GARBER is leaving KUTV in Salt Lake City to become Director of Content for Sinclair’s “The National Desk” in Washington. That operation produces newscasts for stations that don’t have a news department. Mike will oversee the five hour program now being produced, as well as an evening expansion scheduled for later this year.

Here’s the note from KUTV GM KENT CRAWFORD to the staff.  And Mike shared this with me via email:

“I am very excited to make this pivot in my career to serve a national audience. We have truly enjoyed Salt Lake and its beauty. The National Desk has endless possibilities and I look forward to exploring all of them while also getting us closer to family.”

Mike’s been the ND at KUTV for just over four years, He’s been an ND in Dallas, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, FL, and Columbia, SC. He began his career as a sports producer for stations in Tampa and San Francisco.

There’s a new news director today at a CBS owned station in Miami.

Cavanaugh

KERRI CAVANAUGH, a former news director who’s been working as a consultant for Magid since October, 2018, will be the next news director for CBS’s WFOR-TV in Miami. Here’s the news release from the company.

Kerri returned to her home state of Florida when she joined Magid, leaving WTTV/WXIN-TV (CBS/FOX) here in Indianapolis. During her time there, WTTV gained the CBS affiliation and she led the effort that launched a new team in fewer than five months while working inside the existing WXIN building.

She’s also been an ND in Grand Rapids, MI (WXMI-TV/FOX) and for WSFL-TV in Ft. Lauderdale. Kerri’s also worked in Tampa and West Palm Beach.

At WFOR, she succeeds LIZ ROLDAN who left in December to become ND for KHOU-TV (CBS) in Houston. Kerri’s hire will lighten the load on TIM WIELAND, ND for sister CBS o-and-o in Denver, who’s been filling in as interim ND for WFOR since Liz left.

Greetings:

Another consolidation this morning as Gray Television buys all of Meredith’s television stations. Here’s the announcement from Meredith and here’s the release from Gray.

Gray will have to divest one station…and says it will sell WJRT-TV (ABC) in Flint/Saginaw. It will hold onto Meredith’s WNEM-TV (CBS)

Meredith will concentrate on its magazines.

The number of open ND Jobs continues to grow, reaching 36 openings this week after FIVE more jobs opened up. And we have TWO new news directors to tell you about, both a result of promotions within the new ND’s current company.

THREE of those 36 openings are among our FOUR Paid Help Wanted ads.

Otherwise it was a slow week, with ONE obituary to share (a former St. Louis news director). There are just TWO items in Names in the News, and no news about GMs on the move.

Newly Named News Directors:

Aslam

WABC-TV, New York, NY…Thursday’s UPDATE brought first word of REHAN ASLAM’s appointment as VP/News for this ABC o-and-o. Details here. He’s been the ND at sister ABC o-and-o KTRK-TV in Houston since September, 2019 and spent five years as the Assistant ND there before moving up. He’s also worked in Chicago and for two stations in Cleveland. Rehan replaces CHAD MATTHEWS who was promoted to GM in February.

Nygren

KYLY/KXJB-TV, Fargo, ND…RENEE NYGREN is also the benefit of a promotion as she becomes ND for the Gray TV operation. She’s a six year veteran of the station, the last four as the Assistant ND. The other beneficiary of this move is IKE WALKER, who had been both GM and ND here. He now will concentrate on the GM position. Ike joined as ND in 2014, added the GM duties in 2019, and is a former ND in Columbus, OH, and Topeka, KS.

New News Director Openings:

KTRK-TV, Houston, TX…we shared above that REHAN ASLAM has been promoted to ND for sister ABC owned WABC-TV in New York. Rehan worked here six years, first as Assistant ND before his promotion in September 2019. Interesting fact: At both WABC (CHAD MATTHEWS) and KTRK (WENDY GRANATO) he replaced news directors who were promoted to GM.

WDKY-TV, Lexington, KY…this Nexstar owned FOX affiliate is starting a news department. The Paid Ad Below has all the details about this rare opportunity.

WWTV/WWUP-TV, Cadillac, MI…SEAN MAHON has left this CBS affiliate owned by Heritage Broadcasting. Sean was working in his second stint here, first as chief photographer from 1996-2000 before working for three Detroit stations as a photographer. He returned as news director in 2016. WWTV is located in Cadillac, and WWUP is in Sault Ste. Marie, all part of the Traverse City Market.

KTVQ-TV, Billings, MT…after almost 28 years as news director here, JON STEPANEK is leaving this Scripps owned CBS affiliate. Jon told me tonight that he’ll be joining a marketing company run by a former colleague this July. Jon was also news director at WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks, ND, and began his career in in radio as a news and sports director in San Luis Obispo, CA.

KSAN/KLST-TV, San Angelo, TX…this Nexstar operation has a posting online for a new news director. My records shows that DAVID WAGNER has been the ND here for more than ten years and had anchored at the station before leaving for a fund raising job. Nexstar owns KLST and operates Mission Broadcasting owned KSAN under a shared services agreement.

Obituary:

Brady

JAMES BRADY, who was the first news director at KTVI-TV in St. Louis, died Saturday, April 24th, at the age of 90. After leaving KTVI, he went on to a long career as news operations manager for powerhouse St. Louis radio station KMOX-AM. He later worked in public relations for the St. Louis County Police Department and as a loaned executive for United Way. More details about his life (and love of golf) are here.
