June 2, 2024

Greetings:

A little more activity even though it was a holiday shortened week.

TWO new news directors named, with ONE new opening.

No paid help wants ads this week, but our friends at Stephen Arnold Music AND Sciline are back. Please check out their ads…they help support this newsletter.

ONE new GM at a Gray station in Georgia.

TWO longtime NDs retired at the end of May. Both their stations aired stories to which we link below.

ONE Florida news director was the target of a texting scam. We’ll show you the story her station did to warn viewers.

A new head for Boston public TV station WGBH-TV, a reward for information about the disappearance of an Iowa anchor is doubled…at least for a while…and we have a look at what’s going on in Cincinnati television.

All that and more below!

Newly Named News Director:

Koumjian

WNYT-TV, Albany, NY…this Hubbard Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate has promoted JOSH KOUMJIAN to be its next news director. Josh began his career at WNYT as an associate producer, went to WXXA-TV in Albany as a producer, and then returned to WNYT as a producer, then EP, and finally Assistant ND before being promoted to ND this week. He replaces MICHAEL RAFFAELE who left in March to become ND for WHP-TV in Harrisburg, PA.

Burton

KXXV/KRHD-TV, Waco/Bryan, TX..JUSTIN BURTON has been named station manager/news director for these Scripps owned ABC stations. Here’s the memo from regional VP KATHLEEN CHOAL. Justin’s been working at Spectrum News in Austin as managing director, overseeing several markets. It’s a return to Scripps for Justin, who earlier worked for the company in Kansas City and Bakersfield among other stops.

New News Director Opening:

Hendrix-Beach

KWES-TV, Midland, TX…this Tegna owned NBC affiliate is looking for a new news director. My records show that MELISSA HENDRIX-BEACH has held that job since September, 2018, when she was promoted from Assistant News Director.

SciLine briefing:

Social media & teen health

Thursday, June 6 (2-3 p.m. EDT) – Zoom

SciLine’s next briefing will cover how social media affects the physical and mental health of young people, including discussions about: social media usage patterns and drivers among different demographic groups; connections to mental health, including both benefits and harms; impacts on physical health via changes to sleep and eating behavior; and what parents and guardians can do to support young people’s safe and healthy social media use. SciLine Director Rick Weiss will moderate the briefing.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

DAN LOTHIAN, a former CNN and NBC correspondent, has been named Editor in Chief for Boston public TV station WGBH-TV.

The end of May brought the end to the careers of TWO long time news directors, both remembered by their stations.

RICK GALL retired as ND for Capitol’s WRAL-TV (NBC) in Raleigh after almost 20 years as news director and almost 30 at the station, where he began as a reporter.

And AUDREY PRYWITCH left Nexstar’s KTVI/KPLR-TV in St. Louis (FOX/CW) after 23 years at the station and 16 as news director.

Best wishes to both for long and happy retirements.

Like too many Americans, WKMG-TV (Orlando) news director ALLISON McGINLEY was the target of a scam that saw many of her staff receive a fraudulent text message. The station aired this story to warn viewers.

Ridge

STEVE RIDGE, a private investigator perhaps best known to you as a longtime Magid consultant and executive, has increased the reward for information about the disappearance of a former Mason City, IA anchor, JODI HUISENTRUIT. She failed to show up to work at KIMT-TV almost 29 years ago. The reward is now $100,000: the offer expires on the anniversary of her disappearance, June 27th.

Finally, long time Cincinnati media reporter JOHN KIESEWETTER has a look at May rating results in the Queen City (including actual numbers). His latest column contrasts ratings from 2015: the numbers are not pretty. John also writes about a number of personnel moves.

General Manager News and Notes:

Gray has named GREG CONNOR as GM of its Augusta, GA, operations, WRDW/WAGT-TV (CBS/ABC). He’s most recently was GM for WACH-TV in Columbia, SC, and replaces MIKE OATES who is retiring after 33 years, the last seven as GM.

May 28, 2024

Greetings:

Apologies for our tardy delivery, but a busy week here. Attended Pacers-Celtics Saturday night, the Indy 500 Sunday (all day!) and the Pacers-Celtics again last night. For good measure, going to the Indiana Fever game tonight!

And we had house guests.

But here it is!

Josef Newgarden practicing on 5/20/24. (Photo by Rick Gevers)

For many years, our Memorial Day edition salutes the winner of the Indianapolis 500. This year’s that’s JOSEF NEWGARDEN who became the first back to back winner since HELIO CASTRONEVES in 2001-2002.

Fun fact: Yesterday’s attendance of about 340,000 means that about one in every 1000 people in America were at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Among them: at least TWO current top 25 news directors and THREE former NDs. I suspect there were more.

Enough sports. We will NOT discuss Monday’s Pacers-Celtics game except to say that our attendance at the game is why our report is late.

A holiday week usually means a light edition, and that’s true this week.

Just ONE new opening, and NO newly named news directors, meaning our count of open ND jobs increases to 43.

There are some items in Names in the News, ONE obituary for a television executive, and some clarification on who’s running the CBS o-and-o in Detroit.

Have a great week.

Newly Named News Director:

For the second consecutive week, I am not aware of any new news directors. But I ALWAYS appreciate any tips from readers.

New News Director Opening:

Steve G.

KQDS-TV, Duluth, MN…this Coastal Television Broadcasting Group owned FOX affiliate has a posting on its website for a news director. Presumably that would be to replace STEVE GOODSPEED who came out of retirement two years ago to take that job. I emailed Steve last week without a response. I’ll let you know when there’s new information.

Obituary:

Reese

REBECCA (BECKY) REESE died earlier this month. She was just 58 years old and spent most of her career in television, most recently as Senior Vice President of broadcast television for Imagicomm Communications. More in this obituary.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Drechsler

Former KNBC-TV (Los Angeles) investigative producer PHIL DRECHSLER has apparently reached a plea deal that would result in a greatly reduced sentence on child pornography charges. Details in this detailed story from Deadline.com. He worked at KNBC for eleven years before he was laid off last year. Full disclosure: I hired him as a photographer at WTOL-TV in Toledo in 1987

Covington

Former Philadelphia and Columbia, SC, news director turned educator RANDY COVINGTON has taken a voluntary retirement program from the University of South Carolina. Randy was nice enough to share this note with details of his past, present, and future. Randy’s been at (the other) USC since 2001 after 17 years as an ND and 15 years in other newsrooms. Friends can congratulate him via email by clicking here.

Univision’s ILIA CALDERON has been named the winner of RTDNA’s 2024 Paul White Award. She’ll be honored at next month’s RTDNA convention in Milwaukee. I’ll be there and hope you can attend as well.

Fulk

Finally, apologies to WXII-TV (Winston-Salem, NC) News Director LISA FULK. We told you last week she was honored by the American Red Cross for saving the life of a co-worker. In some versions of last week’s newsletter, I misspelled her name AND got the call letters of her station wrong. Not my best work…apologies to Lisa and to you.

General Manager News and Notes:

Lyons

Former news director turned general manager JENNIFER LYONS has a little more on her plate these days. Jennifer’s the GM for CBS owned WBBM-TV in Chicago and is now ‘helping out’ at CBS owned WWJ-TV in Detroit. That came from a spokesperson at CBS stations. Jennifer spent much of her career at WGN in a variety of roles, and had a brief stint as VP/News for NewsNation.

Monday, May 27, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

This week’s report will be posted sometime Tuesday, hopefully before noon Eastern.

Appreciate your understanding!

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

Just ONE ND change this week as a veteran ND leaves her job after almost 30 years with the same company.

That means our list of open ND jobs grows to 42 with ONE of those openings featured in a paid help wanted ad.

TWO GM changes this week. We told you of ONE involving a former ND who joins his company’s corporate staff in our Wednesday UPDATE. Details on both changes below.

There’s ONE obituary for a Little Rock newswoman turned CNN political analyst who died suddenly today.

We have a large number of stories in Names in the News. Fair warning: the last three may not fill you with warm feelings about the future of our business.

Finally, apologies to WTVF-TV (CBS) in Nashville. In reporting the good news of the station’s latest Peabody Award win, I listed the wrong owner in some editions of last week’s newsletter. It is still owned by Scripps!

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Director:

I am not aware of any new news directors this week. But I ALWAYS appreciate any tips from readers.

May 13, 2024

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A veteran news director turned general manager heads to a new job at corporate.

Kiernan

JEFF KIERNAN, who’s been the Vice President and General Manager for Scripps’ KTNV (ABC) in Las Vegas for the last two years, has been named VP of Local News for the company, effective in early June. He’ll work alongside KATE O’BRIAN, who was named President of Scripps News in February.

More details in this news release.

Jeff started his career in Milwaukee, and has been ND at WTMJ-TV (twice), in addition to serving as ND for CBS owned stations in Chicago, Boston, and Minneapolis and for Scripps’ WXYZ-TV (ABC) in Detroit.

More on his latest move in our full newsletter this weekend.

Speaking of Scripps, apologies to WTVF-TV (CBS) in Nashville. In reporting the good news of the station’s latest Peabody Award win, I listed the wrong owner in some editions of last week’s newsletter. It is still owned by Scripps!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Apologies for our late delivery this week.

We always enjoy reporting the promotion of a news director to a GM’s job, particularly when it’s a top 25 market.

And such a move created ONE of our THREE new ND openings this week, while we can tell you about ONE new ND. Our list now stands at 41 openings, with ONE of those jobs featured in a Paid Help wanted ad.

Want to save some money? The discount for RTDNA registration expries this week. Check out the ad below, as well as the new interview opportunities from SciLine.

TWO GM changes this week (one is the ND to GM move teased above). That’s below.

There are TWO obituaries: one for a former group owner and the other for a former Orlando GM.

TWO local stations won Peabody Awards this week: Congrats to them …the full list is below. A hyperlocal news operation serving two markets is shutting down, but you might be able to find some good candidates for openings. And a former large market anchor turned small market news director has written a new book.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Director:

Aaron

KFSM-TV, Ft. Smith, AR…MICHAEL AARON is the new ND for this Tegna owned CBS station. The news release is here and details his background. He’s been the Assistant ND there, and replaces MORGAN SCHWAB who held the title of Director of Content. She kept that title when she was transferred to KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis earlier this year.
