WednesdayJanuary 8, 2020 UPDATE:

Wordlaw

Wordlaw

We have good news from Scripps about TWO filled ND openings, but first a very sad item from longtime broadcaster GARY WORDLAW.

My son was struck by a hit and run driver while crossing a street in Tulsa on December 30th. He has been on life support since then. He has undergone multiple surgeries but unfortunately will be paralyzed from the chest down if he survives his critical injuries.

The outpouring of love and support by my extended family of broadcast and print journalist has been overwhelming. I have read to him the many comments on social media, emails and text that have come from many of you. While devastated by this turn of events, my wife Marjoire and my children and I are eternally grateful for all the prayers offered in behalf of my son Gary Junior and the family.

THANK YOU ALL!

If you’d like to send Gary a note, please email me and I will share his email address with you.  I am reluctant to post it on a public website.

In happier news, at San Diego’s KGTV (ABC), DORIS LEWIS has been promoted to news director. Details in this staff memo from GM LEON CLARK. Doris is a 20+ year veteran of the station, having joined as producer in 2000. She became executive producer in 2006 and assistant ND in 2015. Doris replaces ED CHAPUIS who was promoted to GM of sister-station KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo, CA, last month.

Fun fact. Doris has a law degree (from California Western School of Law) earned while working at the station.

The second new Scripps ND is also coming from within the company.

Lopez

Lopez

GERARDO LOPEZ has been named the ND for the company’s KJRH-TV (NBC) in Tulsa. Gerardo has been the assistant news director for Scripps’ KMGH-TV in Denver for just over a year. He’s been the interim ND at KJRH since SCOTT FITZGERALD left in November after less than a year as ND. Gerardo becomes the fourth ND in less than three years here. He’s worked in many major markets in news management jobs, as you’ll learn by checking out his Linkedin page.

Congratulations to both Doris and Gerardo.

Our full newsletter this weekend will be more robust than the last two!

Greetings:

It’s not quite as slow as last week but I expect more news to share with you next week as the new year gets underway.

We have NO news director moves to share with you, so our count of open ND jobs remains at 32. There is ONE paid help wanted ad for one those jobs which you can find below.

We do, however, have some new listings in our our News Management Openings section, a few items in Names in the News and our GM section, where we’ll tell you about a veteran GM who is leaving his job to run for Mayor of his city.

That’s all below, following this message from the Carole Kneeland Project.

Kneeland Logo

“Kneeland will exceed your expectations. Guaranteed.”

Start the New Year right.

Applications are due this (next) Friday for The Kneeland Project’s next session, which will be held March 4-7, 2020 in Austin, Texas.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for selected participants. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

You’ll join this session’s faculty and other outstanding news managers to explore the exciting challenges that face our industry, and you’ll leave the program with a solid plan to guide your leadership decisions starting day one. This isn’t theoretical information that you will put on a shelf and neglect. Every participant will walk away with concrete action items to implement immediately that will make a difference in their newsroom…and their life.

It’s an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results. Journalists return to their stations refreshed and ready to tackle the sometimes overwhelming challenges newsrooms now face.

December 29, 2019

Greetings:

While I promised an update this weekend, it’s hard to deliver when, to the best of my knowledge, NOTHING happened this week in the world of news management changes.

Or GM changes.

Sadly, though, there were two deaths of young people in our business. While they are not news managers, the typical purview of this publication, I wanted to share them with you as it would be easy to miss the news over a holiday weekend.

McCord

McCord

You may have seen that CARLEY McCORD, a freelance sports reporter for WDSU-TV in New Orleans, was one of five victims of a plane crash in Lafayette, LA. Here’s how the station covered the accident. The plane was en route to Atlanta for the LSU-Oklahoma football game. Carley was the daughter in law of LSU offensive coordinator STEVE ENSMINGER.

Stroud

Stroud

And our sympathy to the staff at WAFF-TV in Huntsville on the death of 31 year old reporter ALLEN STROUD who died Sunday afternoon. He fought stage 4 lung cancer for a year. In this obituary on the station’s website, you’ll learn that Allen followed a most unusual path to television news. Our sympathy to his family, friends, and co-workers at WAFF.

We’ll be back next weekend with a full report, hopefully with better news.

December 22, 2019

Greetings:

A very busy week…perhaps the reverse of the lull before the storm as we move into the holidays.

There are FOUR new news director openings, with TWO of those openings created by NDs taking new jobs. That leaves, by my count, 32 stations looking for a new news director.

TWO of those 32 openings are featured among our THREE Paid Help Wanted Ads below.

We have an obituary for a former Phoenix and Indianapolis General Manager.

In Names in the News, a 20+ year cable news operation is shutting down, while we’ll have a look at a relatively new one in Los Angeles. There’s an interview with the man in charge of the Black News Channel which launches in a few weeks. We’ll also tell you about a new Managing Editor in San Diego and the retirement of a longtime South Carolina newsman.

And there’s a larger than usual number of GM changes this week.

Please enjoy the holidays. I plan on publishing this week, though travel and spotty internet service may make that difficult.

Obituary:

Stough

Stough

WILLIAM (BILL) STOUGH, who worked as a general manager in several markets including Phoenix, Indianapolis, and Ft. Wayne, died November 4th at the age of 83. More details in this obituary.

Names in the News (and other items):

Several items about the world of local cable news operations to share this week.

Nexstar has pulled the plug on one of the older operations, Chicago’s CLTV which the company acquired earlier this year in the Tribune acquisition. It started in January, 1993. ROBERT FEDER has more.

Though CLTV may be shutting down, a relatively new news operation is underway in Los Angeles. Here’s a look at Spectrum’s News 1, less than a year old.

Interested in learning more about the history of local news operations? Check out this master’s thesis from ELLIOTT WISER who began Tampa’s Bay News 9 in 1997.

Wordlaw

Wordlaw

And speaking of creating a new news operation, The Black News Channel will launch in early January in more than 33 million homes. It’s VP of News and Programming is old friend GARY WORDLAW who discussed the project with TV News Check.

ISMAEL ESTRADA joins NBC’s KNSD-TV in San Diego as Managing Editor. For the last 10 years, he’s been a field producer for CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 and earlier worked as an investigative producer for sister NBC o-and-o WMAQ-TV in Chicago.

Brown

Brown

Longtime WYFF-TV (Greenville, SC) Assistant News Director LEE BROWN is retiring from this Hearst owned NBC affiliate. His last day will be in January, 44 years to the day that he first started there as a reporter. He’s also been the Assignment Editor and Managing Editor. The station reported on his retirement…and his career…here.

And while those of you that looked at the clip probably figured it out long before now, the 70th anniversary link we offered last week was from KGO-TV in San Francisco and not KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

General Manager News and Notes:

There’s a LOT of GM news this week.

Siegel

Siegel

We told you in an UPDATE earlier this week (and mentioned it above) that Scripps has named BILL SIEGEL General Manager for WSFL-TV in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, where he’s been tasked with starting a news department. Here’s the official news release. Bill’s been one of the company’s Directors of News Content Strategy. He’s a former ND in New Orleans, and worked in St. Louis, Milwaukee, and San Antonio, and Palm Springs.

Kennedy

Kennedy

Former CBS o-and-o (Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Miami) General Manager BRIEN KENNEDY is the new VP/GM for Nexstar’s WIVB/WNLO-TV in Buffalo.

ANDREW PERINI has big (or at least well-worn) shoes to fill as he ascends to the GM job for KTVN-TV in Reno. That’s because the man he’s replaces, LAWSON FOX, spent 28 years as GM for this Sarkes-Tarzian owned CBS affiliate. Perini has been the sales manager.

GREG McALISTER is leaving Scripps’ KRIS-TV in Corpus Christi, TX. He was there about seven years.

Sinclair Broadcasting has chosen SUSAN CONNOR to be GM for KTVL-TV in Medford, OR. She’s a former GM for WHBQ-TV in Memphis.

Finally, the GM of KTVZ-TV in Bend, OR, BOB SINGER, is leaving this News Press and Gazette station to become President of the Oregon Association of Broadcasters.

Thursday, December 19, 2019 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another newsman moves to the GM’s office, and he’s got a big job ahead of him.

Siegel

Siegel

BILL SIEGEL, who’s spent the last four years as senior director of content strategy for Scripps, is off to South Florida as General Manager for the company’s WSFL-TV in Miami-Fort Lauderdale. He’ll be hiring a news director and a complete staff to launch news on that CW affiliate.

That probably means Bill has a lot of new friends this afternoon. 🙂

Here’s the news release with all the details.

Bill’s a former ND for WWL-TV in New Orleans, and held news management positions in St. Louis, Milwaukee, and San Antonio, and worked as a producer in Palm Springs.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

Greetings:

Another busy week, with THREE new openings and THREE newly named news directors, all of whom have been NDs before.

30. That’s the number of open ND jobs on our list. THREE of those jobs are advertised below, among our FIVE paid help wanted ads.

Speaking of ads, we welcome The Carole Kneeland Project and Stringr! back as advertisers.

TWO men who served as news directors and anchors in their careers have passed this month. Both had interesting other carers outside of our business. We have their obituaries below.

In Names in the News…a fun look from KABC-TV on its 70th anniversary. And a former ND surfaces as an Assistant ND in Pittsburgh.

All that…and much more…below.

Kneeland Logo

Do you know of someone who deserves the gift of Kneeland?
(Hint: it might be you.)

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications now for their March 4-7, 2020 session in Austin, Texas. Applications are due Friday January 10, 2020 and are available here.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for selected news managers. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals — Kneeland takes care of the rest.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

The Kneeland Project is an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results.

Click here for more information and to apply. Only 20 journalists will be selected for this program. Start 2020 right and apply today!

He’s also worked in Wichita, Ft. Smith, and Columbia, MO. He replaces ERIC VALDEZ.

Walters

Walters

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, VA…congratulations to ERIC WALTERS who’s been named news director for this Gray Television owned CBS affiliate. Eric’s worked at Nexstar’s WBTW-TV in Myrtle Beach for more than 25 years, rising to news director in January, 2017. He was the Assistant ND before that. At WDBJ, he replaces DAVID HUGHES who’s off to be general manager for Gray’s WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, VA.

He had been running the news department at News Press and Gazette’s cluster of stations in St. Joseph, MO. He’s worked in Omaha, Merrillville, IN, Great Falls, MT, Kansas City, Little Rock, and Topeka. Jerry replaces ASHLEY HALL.
