Interview an Expert

Zoom – All SciLine events are free

October 3 (2-4 p.m. EDT)

Has your community authorized dental therapists to help bridge the gap in oral health care for tribal or other underserved populations? Want to help your viewers understand how these professionals are different from dentists, and the types of care they can provide?

Book a 15-minute, 1-on-1 Zoom interview with Dr. Donald Chi (U. of Washington School of Dentistry).

He can discuss:

  • Which populations in the United States lack access to dental care, and the effects of poor oral health;
  • Information about dental therapists, including the training they receive and the types of care they do—and don’t—provide;
  • His research in Alaska—the first state to authorize dental therapists to practice—on the effects of individuals in a tribal community gaining access to dental therapists; and
  • Other lessons learned from states that have authorized dental therapists to practice.

BOOK NOW

SciLine, a philanthropically funded, free service for reporters, also runs a free expert matching service that connects reporters rapidly to scientist-sources on deadline.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Our Friday UPDATE told you that Scripps was closings its national Scripps News effort, eliminating about 200 jobs. And President of News, KATE O’BRIAN, is leaving after less than a year in that role. NEW THIS EDITION: Stories from Variety and from Axios. About 50 people will remain in Washington, DC, to provide stories for Scripps’ local stations.

CNN will institute a ‘metered’ paywall for its website, allowing a few views before requiring payment.

Sinclair has rebranded its national newscasts. Going forward, they will be called The National News Desk. Those newscasts were formerly known as The National Desk.

Price

Former GM and consultant HANK PRICE observes that some stations are paying more in reverse compensation charges than they receive in retransmission fees from cable and other companies. And he think the networks need to rethink their demands before stations start becoming unprofitable. Here’s his latest column from TVNewsCheck.

A federal judge has ruled that a defamation suit filed against Nexstar and its Grand Rapids, MI, station, WOOD-TV, can proceed. Former News Director STANTON TANG and Assistant ND AMY FOX, are suing for defamation over their firings after a controversial memo regarding coverage of gay pride events.

The National News EMMYs were awarded this week. Here’s the list to the REALLY LONG list of winners. And if you go the to very end (page 31!) you’ll see that two local stations, Sinclair’s WBFF-TV (FOX) in Baltimore and Hearst’s WDSU-TV (NBC) in New Orleans were recognized (though I don’t think that includes an actual EMMY).

RONNIE LOVE, who’s been an EP at Scripps’ WXYZ-TV in Detroit, has been bumped up the food chain to Assistant ND. He’s a 14 year veteran of the station who’s also worked in Toledo.

KWES-TV (Tegna/NBC) in Midland, TX, has promoted MONIQUE BRAND to assistant ND.

An unusual move at KAIT-TV (Gray/ABC) in Jonesboro, AR, where meteorologist AARON CASTLEBERRY is giving up his on-air job to become the Assistant News Director.

General Manager News and Notes:

Longo

BOB LONGO will retire as General Manager of WJAX-WFOX-TV (CBS/FOX) in Jacksonville at the end of the year. Bob’s a former ND in Orlando, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Binghamton and was ND at WJAX/WFOX before his promotion to GM in 2017. He posted this farewell note on Linkedin. (Cox owns WJAX and operates WFOX for Hoffman Communications.)

Lockwood’s WFXG-TV in Augusta, GA, has named BRAD HARGROVE its next GM. He’s been the National Sales Manager for WDAF-TV (FOX) in Kansas City and replaces CHASTITY SCOTT.

Big news today from Scripps, which announced it is closing Scripps News in mid-November, and eliminating about 200 jobs. About 50 employees will be retained in a Washington bureau to support local stations.

O’Brian

Not sure if her job was eliminated or she chose to leave, but the company’s President of News, KATE O’BRIAN, announced she is leaving the company. Her tenure in that position was so short you could count the months on the fingers of both hands, with room to spare (her appointment was announced in late February.)

Details in this article from Broadcasting and Cable and more in this story from Deadline.com.

The stock market appeared to like the news. Scripps’ stock was up 23.7%.

To $2.35 a share.

LOTS of news this week. It will be a busy newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

For the THIRD week in a row, THREE new NDs, but this week we have TWO new openings.

Our list of open ND jobs remains at 35.

If you’re planning on attending the NAB show in New York, make sure your plans include a stop at the Octopus booth. Details in its ad below.

We have TWO paid ads for management level jobs with Spectrum in two pretty desirable markets, Raleigh and Austin, TX. Sciline has interesting new opportunities to learn more about some election related issues and things to know if your city is considering building a new stadium or arena. And we also have an ad for longtime newsletter supporter Stephen Arnold Music.

We recap the CBS moves to assign ONE GM to oversee TWO large market stations. And we’ll tell you about the upcoming retirement of another veteran Tegna executive.

Finally, a story about a news director getting to live out a dream…umpiring a baseball game in a major league stadium.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Vargas-Sino

WXTV, New York, NY…ADRIANNA VARGAS-SINO has been promoted to Vice President of News for this Univision owned station. She’s been the main anchor there since 2011. More in this post from the station’s LinkedIn account. Adrianna replaces LUISA COLLINS who left in July after three years as VP of Content.

News 12 New Jersey and Connecticut…I’m told by a reliable source that BROOKE ROTHENBERG has been promoted to ND, overseeing both these Altice owned operations. I tried to confirm with emails to both Brooke and News 12 VP/News AUDREY GRUBER, but my emails were not returned. Brooke has worked at News 12 since 2005.

Schaper

WGBA-TV, Green Bay, WI…BOB SCHAPER starts in late October as the next ND for this Scripps owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the ND for Nexstar’s WOWK-TV in Charleston-Huntington WV since 2021. Here’s the note from WGBA Station Manager JACLYN CLARK to the staff. Bob replaces RYAN SCOTT who returned to sister Scripps station WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee as Managing Editor.

New News Director Openings:

Roldan

KHOU-TV, Houston, TX…LIZ ROLDAN is leaving this Tegna owned CBS affiliate after 3+ years as news director. We get details in this report from Houston media blogger MIKE McGUFF. Liz, a Houston native, came to KHOU in 2021 from WFOR-TV (CBS) in Miami where she spent nine years as news director.

WOWK-TV, Charleston/Huntington, WV…we told you above that BOB SCHAPER is leaving after three years to become ND for Scripps’ WGBA-TV in Green Bay.

  • U.S. voter demographics: who votes, where they live, and how those patterns have shifted in recent years;
  • Major factors that drive voter turnout for different demographic groups;
  • Obstacles to voting and who is most impacted most by those barriers; and
  • Research-supported steps communities can take to increase voter turnout.

Is your community pursuing new stadium construction? Book a 15-minute, 1-on-1 Zoom interview with Dr. Judith Grant Long (U. of Michigan). She can discuss:

  • Cost trends for sports facilities, and historical trends for the share of the bill shouldered by the public,
  • Economic benefits of new stadiums and arenas to host cities, such as new jobs, taxes, tourism, or other economic activity, and how public benefits compare to public costs;
  • Urban development impacts of stadiums and arenas, including their use as “anchors” for sport and entertainment districts;
  • What happens to sports venues after one-time events such as the Olympics and World Cup; and
  • The best and worst types of sports-facility investments, from a host city perspective.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Gibson

BRADY GIBSON, news director for WISH-TV here in Indianapolis (Circle City Broadcasting, CW) got a rare honor recently. He was chosen to be one of the umpires for Prep Baseball Report’s High School All-American game in Miami. Brady’s a big baseball fan who regularly umpires games around Indianapolis. The station aired this story.

General Manager News and Notes:

Beall

LYNN BEALL, who’s Tegna’s EVP and COO, will leave in mid-2025. Here’s the news release. She first joined Tegna (then Gannett) as GM of KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis, became EVP in 2006, and moved into her current job in 2017. This comes just one week after Tegna’s SVP of News, ELLEN CROOKE, announced her 2025 retirement, and just three months after Tegna got a new CEO, MIKE STEIB.

Our Wednesday UPDATE told you that CBS was assigning TWO former news directors turned GMs to oversee TWO stations each. JOHNNY GREEN, JR., who’s been running WCBS-TV in New York, will also oversee WBZ-TV in Boston (where Johnny had once been ND). And TIM WIELAND will move to Los Angeles to be GM at KCBS/KCAL-TV, but continue to serve as GM for KCNC-TV in Denver, as he has since 2021 after his promotion from ND.

I could not find any CBS news releases about those changes, perhaps because MIKE NELSON, who might have overseen those releases, is leaving as SVP/Communications for CBS News and Stations. He was quickly replaced by LANCE FRANK.

September 15, 2024

Wednesday, September 18, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Big changes this week at CBS owned stations…and they are a big departure in the way stations are managed.

Wieland

Today, TIM WIELAND was named a Regional GM for KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles. He will continue to serve as GM for KCNC-TV in Denver, a job he’s held since 2021 (and where he formerly served as news director). Tim will move to Los Angeles. I have yet to see a news release from CBS, but here are stories from Broadcasting and Cable and TVNewsCheck. Tim replaces JOEL VILMENAY who sent this note to the staff.

KRISTINE STRAIN, who’s been ND at KCNC since Tim was promoted to GM, has been given the new title of Station Manager and News Director.

Tim’s promotion is the second such move this week.

Green, Jr.

JOHNNY GREEN, JR., who’s been the General Manager for WCBS-TV in New York since 2021, has also been named a Regional General Manager, adding oversight of WBZ-TV in Boston (where he had once served as news director). Haven’t seen a news release on this change, either .He replaces JUSTIN DRAPER: we told you last weekend that Justin, a long time CBS employee, was leaving.

And earlier this summer, WBBM-TV (Chicago) GM JENNIFER LYONS (also a former ND) added oversight of CBS’s struggling Detroit station, WWJ-TV.

As one observer put it in an email to me, glad to see CBS is trying these changes in such small markets (#1, #2, #3, #8. #14, and #16).

Who knows what the rest of the week will bring….but we’ll endeavor to bring it to you with UPDATES (if warranted) and in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

For the second week in a row, THREE new NDs. but just ONE new opening.

These changes take our list of open ND jobs to 35.

We have TWO paid ads for management level jobs with Spectrum in two pretty desirable markets, Raleigh and Austin, TX. Weather coach TIM HELLER is back with an ad for his services, and Sciline has some good opportunities to learn more about science coverage.

After a long career at CBS, one of its o-and-o GMs is leaving his post. That’s below. along with details about an upcoming retirement for Tegna’s SVP of News, ELLEN CROOKE

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Frack

KATU-TV, Portland, OR…native Oregonian DANIELLE FRACK has been promoted to ND at this Sinclair Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. A nine year veteran of the station, Danielle has most recently been the Assistant ND, one of many jobs she’s held there. Danielle replaces YVONNE SIMONS who left in July to become ND for Sinclair’s WZTV (FOX) in Nashville, a move that gets her closer to family in Michigan,

Campbell

Spectrum News, Austin, TX…JEREMY CAMBPELL moves from Spectrum’s NY1 to become Senior News Director for this cable news operation. In addition to his time in New York, Jeremy was a news director in Knoxville (WBIR-TV), and also worked in Tampa, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Lafayette, LA, where he started on air, as you’ll learn on his Linkedin page.

Rizzo

WFFF/WVNY-TV, Burlington, VT…JOHN RIZZO moves within Nexstar to become the next news director for this FOX/ABC operation. He’s been the Digital EP for the company’s WTEN-TV in Albany, NY. September SciLine events

Zoom – All events are free

On September 18th (2-3 p.m. ET), SciLine is offering a Zoom-based science “crash course”—designed specifically for editors. This free course will teach basic principles about how science works, how to integrate it skillfully into your outlet’s journalism, and strategies for making sure the science is right during the editing process.

Former longtime Washington Post science reporter Rick Weiss and Ph.D. neuroscientist Dr. Tori Espensen will together lay out key do’s, don’ts, and pitfalls to watch for when editing a news story that includes scientific information or sources. Their insights are based on decades of experience working with reporters, editors, and scientists.

Forty-five minutes of interactive teaching will be followed by a 15-min open Q&A.

Avery

KECI/KCFW/KTVM-TV, Montana…CHRIS AVERY is leaving these Sinclair owned NBC affiliates after six years (branded as NBC Montana) to return to Salt Lake City where he’ll be the Assistant ND at sister Sinclair station KUTV. (CBS). It’s completes the Salt Lake City hat trick for Chris, who’s also worked at KSTU-TV and KTVX-TV.

Also: a correction from an item from last week.

In our report about WCIV-TV (Charleston, SC) ND CATHY HOBBS‘ new job taking over her company’s True Crime Team, we had the wrong company. It’s Sinclair, not Gray, as I reported.

Apologies to all.
