September 8, 2024

Greetings:

We’re later than I had hoped to be tonight, but you can blame it on my double header this afternoon, first taking in the Colts-Texans football game and then the Indiana Fever-Atlanta Dream WNBA game. (Full disclosure: we missed the first eight minutes of the basketball game).

But we have lots of news to share…another reason why we’re late.

THREE new NDs, TWO in top 15 markets. And FOUR new openings, all created by the departures of very experienced newswomen.

These changes take our list of open ND jobs to 37.

Please heck out the ads for Stephen Arnold Music and a new series of opportunities from Sciline.

There’s ONE obituary, that of a former Florida GM.

And there are GM changes at FOUR stations, including TWO at Spanish language stations in top 15 markets.

Finally, just ONE item in Names in the News, but it’s one that was significant for me and should give all some encouragement about the future for some young journalists.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Dacy

WFLD-TV, Chicago, IL…this FOX owned station has named GLEN DACY as VP of News Content and Streaming. Our Wednesday UPDATE told you that it’s a return to WFLD for Glen, who worked there for ten months as part of the launch team for Good Day Chicago. This FOX news release has the rest of his background. He replaces MATT PIACENTE who left in the spring after eight years as ND.

Veloz

WRMD-TV, Tampa, FL…MEREDITH VELOZ  will be the next news director for this Telemundo owned station. She’s been the EP for both WCAU-TV (NBC owned) and its Telemundo sister station in Philadelphia. More here.

Aaro

WKEF/WRGT-TV, Dayton, OH…ADAM AARO moves from the anchor desk to the news director’s office at this Sinclair owned ABC/FOX duopoly. He’s been the evening anchor there for almost nine years, and reported his promotion tonight on his Linkedin page. Adam replaces BECKY GULDEN who left in July after four years to take a job out of television.

September SciLine events

Zoom – All events are free

On September 18th (2-3 p.m. ET), SciLine is offering a Zoom-based science “crash course”—designed specifically for editors. This free course will teach basic principles about how science works, how to integrate it skillfully into your outlet’s journalism, and strategies for making sure the science is right during the editing process.

Former longtime Washington Post science reporter Rick Weiss and Ph.D. neuroscientist Dr. Tori Espensen will together lay out key do’s, don’ts, and pitfalls to watch for when editing a news story that includes scientific information or sources. Their insights are based on decades of experience working with reporters, editors, and scientists.

Forty-five minutes of interactive teaching will be followed by a 15-min open Q&A.

New News Director Openings:

Burger

KTXL-TV, Sacramento, CA…in the first of FOUR departures of veteran female news managers, LISA BURGER is leaving after not quite two years as ND for this Nexstar owned FOX affiliate. She came to Sacramento from sister Nexstar operation KSEE/KGPE-TV in Fresno where she spent 3+ years as ND. Lisa also worked for another Fresno station as well as in Denver and San Diego.

Bonfield

WJXT-TV, Jacksonville, FL…after more than 13 years as news director of this Graham Media owned independent station, KATHRYN BONFIELD has left the station. She did not respond to a message I sent her via Linkedin. Kathryn also spent three years as a news director for WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC, and held a variety of news management jobs over 16 years (in two stints) at WFLA-TV in Tampa.

Hobbs

WCIV-TV, Charleston, SC…CATHY HOBBS is taking a new job with owner Sinclair but will still be based here. She’s taking over Gray’s True Crime team. In her words: “It’s called Criminally Obsessed and it’s on FB, Twitter, Tik Tok and IG. I will be heading up the team producing “Current and trending content”. Here are the notes to staff from Cathy and her GM. She’s been ND for this ABC station for 13 years.

Danehart

WTRF-TV, Wheeling, WV…BRENDA DANEHART makes (I believe) her first appearance in these pages on the occasion of her upcoming retirement. She’s not been mentioned before because she’s been the news director here for more than 20 years, and has worked at this Nexstar owned operation for more than 40 years. More on her background from this 2022 profile when the AP Broadcasters of West Virginia honored her with a lifetime achievement award.

Obituary:

Cuismano

CHARLIE CUSIMANO, who retired in 2020 after almost two years as GM for Sarasota’s SNN-TV, died in late August at the age of 75. He’d been the GSM there before his promotion. Charlie’s son, TOM CUSIMANO, passed along this note about his father’s life and career. More on Charlies’ career can be found on his Linkedin page.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

I spent Thursday and Friday in Atlanta at an IRE/Ida B. Wells Society workshop on investigative reporting for students at HBCU schools in the southeast. About 40 students took part, and I was quite impressed AND encouraged that many of them drove long distances…some as long as six hours…to take part. A very brief description of the workshop is here (which explains why I was involved).

And my thanks to some industry professionals who shared their insight and answered questions from the students. First, JAMES FINCH, VP of News Services for Gray. In the middle picture, WANF-TV (Atlanta/CBS/Gray) News Director KIM SAXON, and finally WANF reporter ANDY PIERROTTI. (And I regret not getting a picture of CNN’s WILLIAM MITCHELL, though you can see him in the background of the second picture).

General Manager News and Notes:

JESUS CHAVEZ rejoins Univision as GM for KMEX-TV in Los Angeles. Details in this report from Media Moves.

Carr

We told you in our Tuesday UPDATE that news director turned general manager MICHAEL CARR is moving up the ABC o-and-o ladder. He’s been promoted to GM for Houston’s KTRK-TV, leaving ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno where he’s been GM for more than four years. In Houston, he replaces another ND turned GM, WENDY GRANATO, who was promoted to GM for KABC-TV in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Franklin

The new general manager for Scripps’ WLEX-TV (NBC) in Lexington, KY, comes from an engineering background. It’s SEAN FRANKLIN who has been director of engineering for the station since 2019. More details about his background and promotion in this news release.

CINDI DIAS has been promoted to GM for Sinclair’s KBAK/KBFX-TV (CBS/FOX) in Bakersfield, CA. She’s been the sales manager there and replaces TERESA BURGESS who retired and posted this on LinkedIn.

September 2, 2024

Wednesday, September 4, 2024:

Greetings:

One of the longest running openings…in one of the biggest markets on our list…has finally been filled.

Dacy

GLEN DACY has been named VP of News Content and Streaming for Fox’s Chicago o-and-o, WFLD/WPWR-TV (Fox/MyTV). It’s a return to WFLD for Glen, who worked there for ten months in 1993-94 as part of the launch team for Good Day Chicago. Most recently Glen worked as producer for CBS for the Democratic Convention in Chicago. His career stops before that are outlined on his Linkedin page, including his start as a reporter in Iowa.

Glen replaces MATT PIACENTE who left the station much earlier this year after eight years as ND. He also worked for two years as ND for NBC o-and-o WVIT-TV in Hartford after 15 years in a variety of roles at NBC’s WMAQ-TV in Chicago.

It’s been a busy week. We’ll recap all the action this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, September 3, 2024:

Greetings:

Always pleased to report that a news director (or former ND, in this case) has been promoted to a GM’s job, particularly when that job is in a top ten market.

Carr

And that’s the case today as MICHAEL CARR moves within ABC to become GM at KTRK-TV in Houston. Mike’s been GM for ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno, where he spent eight years as ND before the promotion four years ago. Here’s the full story from an ABC news release.

Michael replaces another former ND turned GM, WENDY GRANATO, who was recently promoted to GM for KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

Congrats to both.

And one minor correction from last night’s newsletter. Some versions had the wrong call letters for the Louisville station from which KERRY McGEE is retiring. It’s WDRB-TV.

We’ll see you this weekend with our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

I hope you had a pleasant holiday weekend.

More action than I anticipated for a holiday, with TWO jobs filled and TWO others opening, ONE of those openings coming with the pending retirement of a multi-time ND who also worked as a reporter in several major markets.

That leavess our list of open ND jobs at 35.

No help wanted ads this week but I anticipate some next week.

We have a link to KRQE’s tribute to longtime GM BILL ANDERSON whose passing we told you about last week.

TWO GMs in the news this week…one coming and one going, both at Tegna stations.

And several items in Names in the News including the retirement of an original newsroom employee at a Louisville station.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Dangler

KTVI/KPLR-TV, St. Louis, MO…OLIVIA DANGLER takes her third Nexstar ND job as she transfers to this FOX/CW operation. She’s been the ND at WDTN-TV (NBC) in Dayton, OH for 2 1/2 years, earlier ran WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, and is a former AND at Nexstar’s WXIN/WTTV in Indianapolis among other places. Olivia replaces AUDREY PRYWITCH who retired in May after 16 years as ND and 23 at the station.

KTVZ-TV, Bend, OR…this News Press and Gazette owned NBC/FOX duopoly has hired a new ND whose identity will be revealed soon…and we’ll tell you when it is. Whoever gets the job will replace CATHY MARSHALL who’s been ND since late 2022. Cathy first joined KTVZ as the morning anchor and has worked for CNN, and for stations in Boston, Seattle, New Haven and for KGW-TV in Portland, OR, before joining KTVZ.

New News Director Openings:

Bruce

KOMO-TV, Seattle, WA…veteran news director PHILIP BRUCE is retiring at the end of the year. His Linkedin post reveals his future plans. He’s been at this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate for 3+ years and has a wide and vsaried career background, including time with NPR. Phil began his career on the air, working in several large markets as you’ll learn in his Linkedin profile.

WDTN-TV, Dayton, OH…as noted above, OLIVIA DANGLER is leaving this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate for Nexstar’s KTVI/KPLR-TV (Fox/CW) in St. Louis. She was here for 2+ years.

Obituaries:

Anderson

We now have the KRQE-TV on-air tribute to BILL ANDERSON. We told you last week that the longtime general manager for that Nexstar owned CBS in Albuquerque had died after a long illness. He’d been GM here since 1991 and was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle in 2022. He began his career in Wisconsin and later worked in Maine, Iowa, Massachusetts and Arizona.

And a correction on our obituary last week of veteran CBS News correspondent PHIL JONES. We told you his son followed him into our business, working as a sportscaster in Nashville, Indianapolis and Dallas, and now as an anchor in Lexington, KY. That was al correct, but we bungled his first name. It’s PAUL. Apologies to him and to you.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

McGee

KERRY McGEE, who was one of the first employees hired when WDRB-TV in Louisville started news, is retiring after 34 years at this Block Communications FOX affiliate. Kerry is currently the Managing Editor there and first came to Louisville to work at WAVE-TV (NBC) as a photographer and night assignment editor. An Air Force veteran, Kerry came to Louisville after getting his journalism degree at the University of Missouri.

Quick hits:

JORGE QUIQUIVIX is moving to WMC-TV (NBC) in Memphis as the Assistant ND. He’s held the same position at sister Gray station KAIT-TV (ABC) in Jonesboro, AR, where ND GRENDEL LEVY told the staff about his departure.

Scripps promoted BRANDON KINNARD to Assistant ND at WGBA-TV in Green Bay. He’s been a sports anchor/MMJ at that NBC affiliate.

Morgan Murphy Media is merging two newsrooms into one in Marquette, MI. Stations involved are WBUP-TV and WJMN-TV. More here.

General Manager News and Notes:

Hofmann

Former News Director turned General Manger CARRIE HOFMANN has left Tegna’s WLTX-TV (CBS) in Columbia, SC. She posted this on Linkedin about her departure. Before she joined WLTX as GM last September, Carrie served three years as ND for Tegna’s WCNC-TV (NBC) in Charlotte and six years as ND for Scripps’ KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City. She’s also worked in Phoenix, Denver, and Milwaukee.

Yates

But Tegna did fill one GM opening this week, naming CARRIE YATES as GM of WZDX-TV, its FOX affiliate in Huntsville, AL. Details in this news release. She’s been the interim GM since LARRY AUDAS retired earlier this year. She first joined the station in 2020.

August 25, 2024

Greetings:

For the second week in a row, FOUR jobs were filled this week, with ONE new opening.

That shrinks our list of open ND jobs to 35.

No help wanted ads, but new copy from our longtime supporter Stephen Arnold Music, and Sciline has some free offerings to help your content.

We’re sorry to report the death of a longtime New Mexico general manager. We have details about the passing of a retired CBS News correspondent whose son followed him in to our business. And we have the full obituary for JOHN LANSING, including a suggestion for those wishing to make a memorial contribution as well as more details about his life and career.

No new GMs this week…at least that I am aware of.

And TWO items in Names in the News: A new President for ABC News, and we’ll tell you about a longtime ND and anchor who’ll be away from her job while she battles breast cancer

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Marsoun

KWQC-TV, Moline, IL….she’s back! BETH MARSOUN is once again ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate. She was ND there until 2014, when she left for a series of jobs outside of television. Beth returned to the station in February as EP of Quad Cities Live, a 3:00 PM program. You can track those out of TV jobs on her Linkedin page. She replaces ANNE HUGHES who left after 2 1/2 years as ND.

Lopez

KYTX-TX, Tyler, TX…MARANGELI LOPEZ is the new news director for this Tegna owned CBS affiliate. She’s also the evening anchor there and previously worked in Albany, NY, but grew up near Tyler. Marangeli replaces MATEO GAMBOA who left in January to return to Dallas as the Assistant News Director of Mornings for CBS owned KTVT-TV.

Richard

KATC-TV, Lafayette, LA…DAMIEN RICHARD has been promoted to ND for this Scripps owned ABC station. Details in this memo from GM SEAN TRCALEK. Damien’s been here for eight years, most recently as the Assistant ND. Damien succeeds NICHOLE CYRPIAN who left in July to become Exec. Dir. at the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center at her alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi.

Curtis

WTVY-TV, Dothan, AL…perhaps retirement didn’t agree with longtime Dothan broadcaster KEN CURTIS. We told you in 2017 that he was retiring from WTVY where he’d been a senior reporter. Now he’s back as ND. Ken had also been an ND for WDHN-TV in Dothan. At WTVY, he replaces WHITNEY ARGENBRIGHT who left in February after a year as ND and 2 1/2 as the AND.

New News Director Openings:

Germano

WOAI-TV, San Antonio, TX…MICHELLE GERMANO has left this Sinclair owned NBC affiliate after not quite three  years as ND. A San Antonio native, Michelle tells me she plans to stay in the area. Before WOAI, Michelle was the ND for WTVD-TV (ABC owned) in Raleigh/Durham. She also was an ND in Tucson and worked in Houston and Corpus Christi, TX.

Obituaries:

Anderson

BILL ANDERSON, longtime general manager for Nexstar’s KRQE-TV (CBS) in Albuquerque, NM, died this week. While he was fighting liver cancer, he died of an infection. He’s been GM here since 1991 and was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle in 2022. This tribute video has details on his background, lists his fomer markets and his brief acceptance speech. I could not find anything about his passing on the station’s website.

Jones

Retired CBS News Correspondent PHIL JONES died at his Florida home over the weekend. He was 87. He retired from CBS in 2001 after 32 years, where he was known as one of “Cronkite’s Kids.” The network remembered him in this story. He leaves behind his daughter PAM, and his son PAUL, now an anchor in Lexington and a former sportscaster in Dallas, Nashville, and Indianapolis.

Lansing

And one update on a passing we first brought you last week….the complete obituary for long time broadcaster JOHN LANSING who died unexpectedly on August 14th. You can read it here. John was 67. The obituary has great details on his career and family life, and provides a suggestion for anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution. Services will be held a later date and we’ll let you know when.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Almin K.

ABC News named a new President. ALMIN KARAMEHMEDOVIC (common spelling) has been the Senior EP for World News Tonight. He first joined the network in 1998 as a freelance video editor in London. Here’s the story from ABC News. Almin replaces KIM GODWIN who left in May after three years. You may remember that Kim’s a former local news director in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Cleveland.

Bell

Please join me in wishing WJHG-TV (Panama City, FL) news director and anchor DONNA BELL well in her fight with breast cancer. She bid her viewers a temporary farewell in revealing her diagnosis, discovered on what would have been her mother’s 80th birthday. Her Mom died of cancer. She offers good advice for all in that video which is worth watching. And if you want to wish her well, click here for her email address. Donna’s been at WJHG (now owned by Gray) for 30 years.

August 18, 2024

Greetings:

We have a few more details about the death of former ND, GM, and corporate executive JOHN LANSING who died earlier this week at the too young age of 67. That’s in our obituary section below.

Another important story is in Names in the News, also below. Shreveport police will NOT prosecute former KTBS-TV news director and anchor BILL LUNN on charges of possible inappropriate contact with a minor.

And the National Murrow winners were released this week. That’s also in Names in the News below.

As to the typical top of our report, FOUR jobs were filled this week, while TWO new positions opened up.

That shrinks our list of open ND jobs increases to 37.

We welcome back HELLER WEATHER as an advertiser, check out his ad just below.

And Sciline has a number of briefings and interview opportunities, all FREE, including one Monday afternoon.

And there’s ONE GM hire. He’s adding a second station to his job, which seems like a growing trend.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Tim K.

WXYZ/WMYD-TV, Detroit, MI…this Scripps owned ABC affiliate wasted little time in filling its open ND job by promoting TIM KOCHENDERFER. He’s worked there for 22 years, most recently as the Assistant ND. More in this note from GM MIKE MURRI, where you’ll learn about Tim’s unusual (and successful) hobby. He replaces KENNAN OLIPHANT who left last month to become VP/News & Station Manager for WWJ-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Detroit.

Mulligan

KSHB/KMCI-TV, Kansas City, MO…another Scripps station, another new boss. JEFF MULLIGAN returns to this NBC affiliate as Station Manager/ND. More from Regional VP KATHLEEN CHOAL. Jeff worked here as a dayside EP about six years ago but more recently has been the ND at WSIL-TV in Carbondale, IL. He replaces MATT WAGGONER who is (according to his Linkedin Page) is now VP of Growth and Brand for GreenUP Wealth in Overland Park, KS, a KC suburb.

Rafferty

KPAX-TV, Missoula, MT…a busy week for Scripps as it named a third new ND with the promotion of EP MELISSA RAFFERTY to the top job here. She’s currently the EP and has worked at this CBS affiliate for almost 21 years. More about Meliisa and her career in her station bio. She replaces KEITH HATTEN who left in July to become ND for Tegna’s WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville after about three years as ND here.

Hodge

WZMQ-TV, Marquette, MI…KEVIN HODGE adds ND duties in addition to his role as anchor/producer for this Lilly Broadcasting owned CBS/MeTVstation. Kevin came to WZMQ in May after two years as ND and anchor at WBKB-TV in Alpena, MI. He succeeds TRENT BAILEY, who left after nearly two years to take a communications position at the University of Michigan.

New News Director Openings:

WSIL-TV, Carterville, IL…we told you above that JEFF MULLIGAN is returning to KSHB/KMCI-TV in Kansas City as Station Manager and ND. He worked for this Allen Media Broadcasting for about 2 1/2 years.

Taylor

WFFF/WVNY-TV, Burlington, VT…ROB TAYLOR is moving with Nexstar to become the next Assistant ND for WSYR-TV in Syracuse. That station’s GM, BILL EVANS, sent this note to the staff. He’s been the ND here for about three years, spent 18 years at two stations (WLS-TV and WFLD-TV) in Chicago. and has worked in Jackson, MS, Memphis, and Greenville, SC.

Obituary:

We told you Friday that JOHN LANSING, who held many significant jobs, died at the age of 67. New this edition: A Washington Post story which includes more details. And if you missed it, here’s the NPR story we shared Friday. John was chief executive at NPR until earlier this year. There’s still no cause of death, though John did have heart surgery in 2021.

He’s survived by his wife and four children and our sympathy to them.

One correction: our Friday UPDATE said he died in Minnesota. He actually died at his home in Wisconsin.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

RTDNA named the National Murrow Award winners. Here’s an overview of the winners and the complete list is here. Among the winners, my friend and former WTOL-TV (Toledo, OH) intern and employee, CBS’s STEVE HARTMAN, for another win for Excellence in Writing.

Lunn

Authorities in Shreveport, LA, have decided NOT to arrest or prosecute former KTBS-TV anchor and news director BILL LUNN. He resigned from the station in June after police began in investigation into possible inappropriate communication with a juvenile. Two stories: First, from KTBS, and the second from The Shreveport Times.

Following the leads of both ABC and NBC, CBS plans to add a third hour of CBS Mornings this fall. MANY details (including talent) are still to come, according to this report from The Hollywood Reporter.

And we rarely report on radio developments, but this story about the demise of all news WCBS-AM radio in New York caught my eye

General Manager News and Notes:

Kizer

Just ONE GM change this week as Tegna named JIM KIZER to oversee WOI/KCWI-TV (ABC/CW) in Des Moines. He will continue to serve as GM for WQAD-TV (ABC) in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. That seems to be part of a growing trend of one GM overseeing multiple markets. More in the Tegna news release.
