Greetings:
Great to see some of you at this week’s NABJ conference in San Diego. I’ll be at the AAJA conference this week in Los Angeles and hope to see you some of you there.
That travel explains our slight delay in this week’s report, which features TWO new ND openings and ONE new ND named. That leaves our list of open ND jobs at 31.
We have a paid ad for one of those two new openings…a very good station in a smaller market. And we’re re-running four ads from last week…be sure to check those out if you’re looking for a move.
Also this week…some managers on the move…sort of…in Names in the News. We’ll explain below. And a former Maryland ND turned educator welcomes a new son. Dad’s now 55, by the way!

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:
XETV, San Diego, CA…TAUNA LANGE has left this CW affiliate after four years as ND. Tauna’s also been an ND in Honolulu and, if memory serves me correctly, worked in Albuquerque as well. There was an online report that she would be replaced by former XETV assignment editor CHRISTINE TANAKA, but I’m told that Christine will start this week at WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH, as Manager of Content Presentation, a move we reported a few weeks ago.
WVIR-TV, Charlottesville, VA…NEAL BENNETT is leaving this locally owned NBC affiliate to become the Assistant ND for WPTV in West Palm Beach. Neal’s been there for six years (replacing Dave Cupp who was there for 17!) and was previously the ND at KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls and KTWO-TV in Kirksville, MO/Ottumwa, IA. NEW NEWS DIRECTOR NAMED:

KNBC-TV, Los Angeles, CA…veteran NBC newswoman VICKIE BURNS has been named VP/News for this NBC o-and-o. Vickie most recently has been VP of Content and Audience Development for NBC Local Media in New York. Before that she was VP/News at WNBC-TV in New York for just over a year, and also VP/News at WRC-TV, the NBC o-and-o in Washington, DC. She’s also worked at WMAQ-TV in Chicago, the (as if I need to tell you) NBC o-and-o there. Vickie has also worked at WLS-TV and WBBM-TV in Chicago. At KNBC, she replaces STEVE LANGE who left the station in May after about four months on the job.

FOX5 Las Vegas is looking for an Executive Producer for the wildly popular and zany FOX5 Morning News. This is a four hour daily morning news program with two anchor teams and two full time reporters. In this position, you will manage and schedule a staff of Producers, Associate Producers, Talent Bookers, Reporters, Photographers and Editors.
Candidates must have at least two years of full time line producing experience in a commercial television news operation. NAMES IN THE NEWS:
Two new news managers were named this week who don’t even have to move.
Kraycik
At KOMO-TV in Seattle, STEVE KRAYCIK will be the station’s next Assistant ND. Steve most recently spent almost four years as the news director for KCPQ-TV, the FOX affiliate in Seattle, and tells me he’s known KOMO’s ND, Holly Gauntt, for years. He’s also been an ND in Sacramento. KOMO is the ABC affiliate and is owned by Fisher.
WOAI-TV in San Antonio has a new EP who knows that city well. AMANDA EMERY joins this Newport owned NBC affiliate after ten years at cross-town rival KENS-TV. She spent the last five of those years as Senior Producer there.
JIM HICE is the new Assistant ND for Louisville’s WHAS-TV. It’s a return to Louisville for Jim, who most recently worked as an EP for WFTS-TV in Tampa. Earlier in his career he worked at WAVE-TV in Louisville, as well as in Lubbock, TX.
Congratulations to DAVID GWIZDOWSKI who’s been promoted to VP for Broadcast, Americas, for the Associated Press. He’s been with the AP since 1997, and previously worked as an ND in Providence and Bangor, ME, and also worked as an Assistant ND in Boston and Houston.

Belated congratulations to STEVE KALB and his wife, 1010 WINS-AM (New York) anchor KATHLEEN MARPLE on the birth of MARTIN THOMAS KALB. The new addition was born July 2nd, and weighed in at 6 pounds 2 ounces. Steve’s a former ND in Salisbury, MD, and also worked in Philadelphia and Boston.
