Thursday, May 26, 2022 UPDATE:
Greetings:
Another UPDATE, another news director move at a CBS o-and-o.

Hoder
This time it’s a new VP/News Director for the CBS owned station in Pittsburgh, KDKA-TV. SHAWN HODER returns to The Steel City, where he began his career as a photographer and producer at Cox owned WPXI-TV (NBC). More in this news release from CBS. He’s currently the Assistant ND at Tegna’s currently news director-less WTSP-TV (CBS) in Tampa-St. Petersburg.
Shawn’s also worked in Columbus, OH, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Seattle and Orlando.
He replaces KATHY HOSTETTER who was promoted to VP/GM for CBS’s Baltimore station, WJZ-TV last month, after 3 1/2 years as ND at KDKA.
See you at some point this weekend with the full newsletter.
regards,
Rick Gevers

Greetings:
Like my waistline, the number of open ND jobs inches slightly higher this week, with 35 stations on our list of openings.
That’s because there are FIVE new ND openings while another THREE jobs were filled. ONE of the new openings is in market #1, another is at a CBS o-and-o, while another CBS owned station filled its vacant ND job.
THREE of the above mentioned 35 stations are advertising those openings among our EIGHT paid help wanted ads.
TWO obituaries this week, one a veteran GM who spent much of his career at ABC stations, and another of a former CBS correspondent who finished his career reporting for a special projects unit in Houston.
In Names in the News, a former Wyoming news director is retiring, but you know him for another job. A former BNC producer gets a new job and more.
We’ll see you sometime next weekend depending on the Indy 500 goes!
Newly Named News Directors:

Baynes
KOVR/KMAX-TV, Sacramento, CA…MARY BAYNES moves into the big chair at this CBS owned duopoly. She’s been the Assistant ND for the last four years in her second stint here. In between, she was an EP for CBS’s KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles for four years, and previously spent four years at KOVR. She replaces MIKE DELLO STRITTO who was also promoted, in his case to VP/News at KCBS/KCAL.

Delgado
KXXV/KRHD-TV, Waco, TX…DAN DELGADO starts June 30th as the next ND for these Scripps owned ABC affiliates covering Waco, Bryan and Temple, TX. We told you last week that Dan was leaving Nexstar’s KCAU-TV in Sioux City, IA. It’s a return to Texas for Dan, who’s also been an ND in Laredo and anchored in San Antonio. He replaces SYVLIA VILLAREAL who left last December after six years.
KIMT-TV, Mason City, IA…DAN CLOUSE returns to this Allen Media owned CBS affiliate, this time as ND. Dan passed along this note which has more details and covers his background. He replaces JAIME COPLEY who left late last year after eleven years as ND and 23 at the station. According to her Linkedin page, she’s now working as an advertising manager for a manufacturing company.
New News Director Openings:

Jeremy’s worked for Fox News Channel and NewsChannel 8 in Washington and for stations in Washington, DC, Wilkes-Barre, PA and Charlottesville, VA.

Bradley
WBZ-TV, Boston, MA…our UPDATE on Tuesday told you that JESSI MILLER BRADLEY had left this CBS o-and-o. Jessi was the news director here for about 18 months, and worked at the station for 25 years. She first joined ‘BZ in 1997 as a producer. She was promoted to Executive Producer in 2019, and news director in October, 2020.

Polizzi
WIVB-TV, Buffalo, NY…LISA POLIZZI has left this Nexstar/CBS affiliate at a most unusual time: in the middle of the coverage of the mass shooting at a local supermarket. This Buffalo News story explains the circumstances. Further complicating matters: the station’s GMs, BRIEN KENNEDY, is scheduled to retire this week. Lisa spent five years as ND and seven at the station, joining from her previous job as ND for WKBW-TV in Buffalo. She’s also worked for a third Buffalo station and in Baltimore.

Gutierrez
KTSM-TV, El Paso, TX…TIM GUITERREZ has left this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate after a little more than 1 1/2 years as ND. Tim had previously been the ND for another Nexstar station, KVEO-TV in Brownsville and earlier worked in Laredo, San Antonio, and Albuquerque.

Obituaries:

Liss
WALTER LISS, whose career included jobs at several ABC owned stations, died Monday. He was 78 years old. This story from WABC-TV in New York highlights his ABC career, but fails to mention his roles as GM for WPLG-TV (then Post- Newsweek) and President of the Cox TV stations Group. For the rest of the story (as PAUL HARVEY liked to say), check out this profile.

Kelley
CHRIS KELLEY, a former CBS News correspondent who later worked in the Special Projects Unit for KPRC-TV (NBC) in Houston, died May 6th at the age of 83. He began his career working for Armed Forced Radio and TV, moved into radio news, advancing to WCBS radio in New York. Chris later moved to TV side before his final TV job in Houston. More in this detailed and interesting obituary.
Names in the News:

Williams
PETE WILLIAMS, a former news director for KTWO-TV in Casper, WY, is retiring. You probably know him better as the longtime NBC News Justice Department correspondent, but he started in Casper. He later worked for then Congressman DICK CHENEY and the Defense Department. His former station, KTWO, covered his retirement news, as did The Washington Post.
WTSP-TV, the Tegna owned CBS affiliate in Tampa/St. Petersburg, has filled its open morning EP position. TAYLOR BERRY will join on June 6th. She was most recently a Senior Producer with the Black News Channel and has aso worked in Houston and New Orleans.
Speaking of Tegna, for those who missed the news in our UPDATE earlier this week, shareholders have approved the merger with Standard.

I’m not aware of any GM openings this week. Please email me if you know of one I’ve missed.
