A veteran CBS employee returns to his former station for his first news director’s job.
Keenan
SCOTT KEENAN, a 28 year employee of CBS, has been named Vice President/News Director for KTVT/KTXA-TV (independent), the network’s duopoly in Dallas/Ft. Worth. He’s been the Southwest Bureau Chief for CBS News and was the Assistant news director at KTVT from 2004-2006. He’s also worked for CBS’s WBBM-TV and the CBS bureau in Chicago, where he also once toiled for WGN-TV. Details here.
Scott replaces LAURIE PASSMAN who moved to a new role as Director of Special Content for the stations. Laurie moved into her new role earlier this year after four years as ND.
We’ll expect to have another UPDATE tomorrow, a new job for a veteran ND.

The short week leads to a short list of news management changes.
Just ONE new opening, and we’ve removed THREE jobs from our list of open jobs for reasons I explain in the “Newly Named News Directors” section just below.
With those changes, our list drops to just 19 open ND jobs. ONE of those 19 jobs is featured in a Paid Help Wanted ad, along with an ad for a Senior Producer position at AccuWeather.
ONE obituary for the founder of en eponymous school that trained many broadcasters in Detroit and the region.
And there’s ONE GM change this week….the retirement of a Los Angeles GM.
Just ONE item in Names in the News (and other stuff). It’s about an interesting program from Scripps.

Newly Named News Director:
KAGS-TV, Bryan, TX…we’ve removed this Tegna station from our list of open ND jobs. I am told the station will no longer have a news director, but they have posted a new opening for an assistant news director. ERIN WENCL had been the ND here, leaving in July after three years for an ND job in Washington State.
And we have removed two other jobs from our list, those from KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City and KBMT-TV in Beaumont, TX. Due to editing errors, those jobs were not removed from the list when they were filled.

The Senior Producer, Live Broadcast for AccuWeather will be producing compelling live video segments for the national and award-winning AccuWeather Television Network on a daily and as-needed schedule. T
he Senior Producer, Live Broadcast will put together the rundown for each individual segment and work with a team of on-air broadcasters, director, graphics, studio crew and video editors to develop innovative and engaging content. The weather and the news require 24/7/365 coverage and the live broadcast producer will be required to work differing hours, depending on the severity of the weather situation or breaking news story.
AccuWeather is looking for someone who has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, a BA or BS in Journalism, Communications or Meteorology and has demonstrated at least 5 years of experience in a dynamic, live news production environment at a television station or broadcast network.
This mid-level position will work at AccuWeather’s Headquarters in State College, Pennsylvania.

Howard
SPECS HOWARD, founder of the eponymous Specs Howard School of Media Arts in Detroit, died Saturday, September 3rd, at the age of 96. Founded more than 50 years ago, the school launched the career of dozens of broadcasters in the area. More details in this obituary from The Detroit Free-Press.

We’re a little tardy in reporting a new hire for an interesting project from Scripps that has backing from Google. The company has hired JIM IOVINO, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, to lead the new Scripps Journalism Journey Initiative, designed to train print journalists to do video reporting.
