July 26, 2013

Greetings:

We are uncharacteristically early this week, in part because of the Brickyard 400 race here in Indianapolis, and in part to let YOU know about a chance to win $1,000 and a free trip to the RTDNA convention…but the deadline for this contest entry is midnight tonight!  Look below for the ad.

Just ONE newly named news director in our report this week, while, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO new news director openings.

There are 26 stations in our full list of open ND jobs.

THREE of those stations are advertising for their next ND. Check those ads out below, along with ads for a variety of other news management openings.

Want to win $1,000 and a free trip to the RTDNA conference in Anaheim later this year? Check out our ad below for an awards contest for personal finance reporting. But enter quickly…the deadline is midnight tonight, Eastern time.

Further in our report, there’s an obituary for a former Atlanta news director.

In Names in the News, a new president for a new national news network, KTVU-TV in Oakland reportedly dismisses three producers after it broadcast fake names of the Asiana Airlines pilots, and a Virginia news director gets a memorable send-off.

All that following this week’s changes:

New News Director Opening:

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…while this is not a new opening, I did want to point out that the station is advertising the opportunity. Check out their ad below.

Newly Named News Director:

Just one business day after announcing NANCY KENT-SMITH‘s promotion to Regional News Director for station owner Raycom, this NBC affiliate promoted FRANK JONES to be her replacement. He’s been the Assistant ND here since 2004. He first joined the station in 1992 as a producer and was later named Executive Producer. He also worked as a reporter and anchor in the Tri-Cities market in Tennessee.

If you’d like to state your case to a well targeted audience, email me an item (max. 150 words). You may include a link to a website, an email address, and a photo. You must include your name. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Names in the News…and other stuff:

O'Brian

Veteran ABC News executive KATE O’BRIAN will be the first President of the new Al Jazeera America news network, set to debut on August 20th. Her appointment was one of several announced this week, and you may know some of the other names: former CBS executive MARCY McGINNIS, one time CNN producer DAVID DOSS, and former Miami News Director (and current CNN producer SHANNON HIGH-BASSALIK). Read more about their new jobs…and this new network…by clicking here.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco has fired three veteran producers. That comes after the station’s investigation into its recent broadcast of four fake names as the pilots of the Asiana Airlines flight that crashed earlier this month.

JEFF MULLIGAN, Assistant ND at KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, MO, moves to Indianapolis to be the next Assistant ND for WISH-TV.  He’s a former EP for WDAF-TV in Kansas City.

We told you a few weeks ago that BILL FOY was stepping down as ND of WSET-TV in Lynchburg/Roanoke, VA, to take a public relations position at Virginia Tech. His last day was this week, and his staff conspired to make it memorable. Click here to see what they did.

GM Note:

Simons

After 21 years at the station, and 6 1/2 as General Manager, WAYNE SIMONS announced his retirement from WINK-TV (Ft. Myers, FL) on Wednesday. His last day is today (Friday, July 26th). In a note to the staff, Wayne said he is “looking forward to riding my motorcycle, sleeping in late and just plain having fun.” He spent 20 years working for Landmark Communications, first overseeing radio stations in Norfolk, and later as General Manager for KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.

Finally, in our mention last week about PAUL DAVIS, we told you he was the second person to be named Illinoisan of the Year by that state’s Broadcasters Association. He’s actually the second person to be honored TWICE.

July 20, 2013

Greetings:

We have THREE new news director openings and TWO newly named NDs in this weeks report, but we have a lot more information that just those moves. One of those new openings comes from some changes in the corporate news management structure at Raycom, which you can read about under New ND Openings.

We now have 26 stations in our full list of open ND jobs.

SIX of those open ND jobs are are featured in Paid Help Wanted Ads below. We also have ads for TWO Assistant News Director jobs, TWO Executive Producer positions, and even an ad for a producer opening in Richmond. Those eleven ads cover a wide range of positions and market sizes, lots of choose from if you’re looking for a job or know someone who is.

And we have almost a dozen items in Names in the News. Some of the names will be familiar to many of you. And we have a story about a Maine news director who protested…and got some changes to…a radio station poll about ‘hot’ newswomen.

All that following this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

KCTV, Kansas City, MO…we told you earlier this week that BLAISE LABBE was returning to Texas to be the new ND for Sinclair’s WOAI/KABB-TV in San Antonio. He’s been the ND for this Meredith owned CBS affiliate for 3 1/2 years. More below.

WWBT-TV, Richmond, VA…in one of a series of Raycom news management changes, longtime news director NANCY KENT has been promoted to Regional News Director, becoming the first Raycom regional ND whose name doesn’t end in man(n). VP/ News SUSANA SCHULER will now focus on strategic planning and work with fewer stations. Regional News Directors LARRY SILBERMANN, VICKI ZIMMERMAN, and STEVE ACKERMANN will adjust their station portfolios, and Ackermann will be headquartered in Montgomery.

Rundgren

KMID-TV, Midland, TX…KARL RUNDGREN, who first joined this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate as an anchor in 2008 and was later promoted to news director, tells me he’s leaving television to pursue a career in financial planning. Karl’s also worked in San Angelo, Abilene and Toledo. (This position is ND only. The station will hire a new anchor.) You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

WUTR/WFXY/WPNY-TV, Utica, NY…while not a new opening, the station is advertising this anchor and news director position again. Details below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Labbe

WOAI/KABB-TV, San Antonio, TX…BLAISE LABBE returns to San Antonio as ND for this newly formed Sinclair duopoly. Blaise spent the last 3/12 years as ND for KCTV in Kansas City, but earlier had been the operations manager and later the Assistant ND for KENS-TV in San Antonio. In between he was the ND for KWTV in Oklahoma City. He’s also worked in Houston, Wichita Falls, TX, and Amarillo. During his career, he’s been a studio cameraman, news photographer, reporter, and even did weather. He replaces TOM BELL who left the station in May to become ND for KOVR-TV in Sacramento. (Some moron, reporting this move in a mid-week UPDATE, accidentally relocated KOVR to San Antonio. It took all-night, but I did move it back to California.)

Thanks to those of you who pointed out that error. Interestingly NO ONE pointed out that in that same report I said that Blaise started his career as a ‘studio camera’.

KGET-TV, Bakersfield, CA…Assistant News Director MIKE TRIHEY will become news director of this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate in September, following the retirement of veteran ND JOHN PILIOS. John’s been ND here since 2001: he started as the assignment manager in 1999. He earlier had been ND for KCOY-TV in Santa Maria/Santa Barbara, working his way up after starting as a reporter and assignment editor. Old friends can wish John well in his still-a-few-weeks-away retirement via email: johnpilios@kget.com

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Canova

Former Minneapolis and Providence News Director TED CANOVA has been named Managing Director/News Director for WGBH, the public broadcaster in Boston. Ted will oversee news content and coverage across all platforms (WGBH-TV airs a daily 30 minute public affairs program). He first joined WGBH in 2011 after a stint at Minnesota Public Radio. Ted’s a former ND at both KMSP/WFTC-TV and WCCO-TV in Minneapolis and WJAR-TV in Providence. It’s a return to Boston for Ted: he’s an Emerson College alum.

Lewis

KYANN LEWIS starts Monday as the Senior Executive Producer for KNTV, the NBC o-and-o in San Jose/San Francisco. She’s been the Executive Producer for the syndicated morning program, The Daily Buzz. Kyann is a former ND in Houston (KIAH-TV) and Greenville, SC (WHNS-TV), and also worked for two stations in Portland, OR.

OLIVIA DANGLER has been named morning executive producer for WFAA-TV in Dallas. She’s currently an EP for WXIN-TV in Indianapolis, and has earlier worked in Phoenix, Columbus, OH, and New Bern, NC.

Speight

Two new EPs at WRC-TV in Washington, DC. SCOTT TRABANDT moves to dayside EP. He’s been working on the 11:00 PM newscast. And KERWIN SPEIGHT returns to WRC (where he started as a production assistant) to replace Scott as the Nighside EP. Kerwin’s produced in Charlotte, Houston and Baltimore, and has been an EP in Sacramento, Pittsburgh, and WRAL-TV in Raleigh, where he currently works.

Congratulations to SABRINA WOLMAN, who’s been promoted to Morning EP for KGTV, the Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate in San Diego. She helped launch weekend morning news at KGTV following a long stint as a producer in Philadelphia.

Batt

After 15 years at WRTV in Indianapolis, SUSAN BATT has moved three blocks south on Meridian Street to WTHR-TV, where she’ll be the Investigative/Special Projects Producer. Susan was the EP/Special Projects at WRTV, and held a wide variety of positions there over the years. She’s also worked for ABC News bureau in Washington, and at KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO.

MATT BROWN has joined Scripps’ KSHB-TV in Kansas City as Assistant News Director. He most recently was the ND for KOKI-TV in Tulsa, a job he left in March after two years. He’s also worked in Austin, TX, Wichita, and Corpus Christi.

Batien

CHRISTY BATIEN has been promoted to Content Manager for Quincy’s KTIV-TV in Sioux City, IA. She’s a longtime station employee, having started there in 1998. She’s been an assignment editor, producer, the morning anchor (for ten years), and most recently has been the Internet Director for this NBC affiliate.

Congrats to old friend PAUL DAVIS, who becomes the second person ever to be TWICE named the Illinoisan of the Year by the Illinois News Broadcasters Association (the first was former governor JIM THOMPSON.) Paul was the longtime ND at both WGN-TV in Chicago and WCIA-TV in Champaign. He was also an ND for the Tribune station in Boston, and worked for FACS for a few years. He’s now living in Illinois and I’m sure he’d love to hear from old friends via email at: pmdpmd2@aol.com

After a protest from Portland and Bangor ND MIKE REDDING, a Bangor radio station modified an online poll which originally asked listeners to choose the ‘hottest’ newswoman. The station now offers a choice to pick a ‘favorite’ newswoman.

Chriesman

One time news director WILLIE CHRIESMAN checked in to tell us that he’s started an online news site targeting a professional audience of people of color with news and information of interest to them. It’s called U Metro, and you can check it out here. Willie was a news director in Birmingham, an Assistant News Director in Boston, an EP in Denver, and also working in Chicago, Detroit, and Atlanta.

Correction from last week: In our report on BRAD LUCK‘s move to WVIT-TV in Hartford, we told you that he worked for KUSI-TV in San Diego. He actually worked for KSWB-TV.

July 14, 2013

Tuesday, July 16, 2013 UPDATE:

A veteran news director returns to Texas today.

Labbe

BLAISE LABBE, who’s been the ND for KCTV in Kansas City for 3 1/2 years, has been named Director of News for Sinclair’s new duopoly in San Antonio, WOAI-TV and KABB-TV. He’s a former news director for KWTV in Oklahoma City, and spent more than five years at KENS-TV in San Antonio, first as news operations manager and then assistant news director.

He began his career as a studio camera, moved into news photojournalism, even served a stint as a reporter and weatherman in Wichita Falls, TX. He returned to photography in Amarillo and later Houston, where he was later promoted to Special Projects Producer for KHOU-TV before Belo promoted him to San Antonio.

He replaces TOM BELL who left WOAI earlier this summer to become news director for KOVR-TV in Sacramento.

We’ll have more on this…and all the latest news…in our full report later this week.

regards,

Rick Gevers

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

We have lots to tell you this week, with FIVE new news director openings, and THREE newly named news directors.

Those changes bring our list of open news directors jobs to 23.

We have paid help wanted ads for FOUR of those open news director jobs, as well as for an EP positions in Baltimore, San Diego, and for News 12 New Jersey. If you’re not quite ready for those jobs, a Richmond station needs a producer.

And we have lots more to share with you.

We have obituaries for the wife of a well known broadcaster, and another for the mother of a longtime news director.

Lots of items in Names in the News…to which I’ve added ‘…and Other Stuff’.

Like what, you ask?

Well, there’s the list of National Emmy Award nominations, a list which includes eight local stations. Several items about ABC people: an award for a retired correspondent and anchor, the retirement of a longtime bureau producer, and a new job for another veteran ABC producer. We have links to two New York Times articles examining trends in the industry, and details about a number of news managers on the move.

All that following this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…BOB ROCKSTROH is leaving this Citadel Communications owned ABC affiliate later this month. He’s been the ND here since January, 2012. Bob’s a former ND in Hartford and Ft. Wayne, and worked as an EP for FiOS1, Verizon’s news operation in New York. He’s also worked in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and San Diego. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

WRIC-TV, Richmond, VA…this Young Broadcasting-owned ABC station is looking for a new news director, following the departure of LISA MELTON, who’d been the ND there for six years and in the market for, I believe, 19 years. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Jones

WIS-TV, Columbia, SC…congratulations to RASHIDA JONES who’s been named Executive Producer for the CHRIS JANSING show on MSNBC. She’s been the ND for this Raycom owned NBC affiliate for the past two years. She earlier spent seven years at the Weather Channel in a variety of roles, and earlier worked as a producer in Norfolk. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Davis

WFFF/WVNY-TV, Burlington, VT…TRACY DAVIS is leaving this recently-acquired by Nexstar FOX/ABC duopoly. She’s moving west to become the Assistant News Director for WDJT-TV, the CBS affiliate in Milwaukee. Tracy’s been the ND here since October, 2011, and served as news manager for almost four years before that. She’s also worked in Lafayette, IN. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid help wanted ad below.

KYTX-TV, Tyler, TX…DAN DELGADO has left this CBS affiliate after six years as ND. The station is owned by London Broadcasting.

Newly Named News Directors:

Gaylord

KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, OK…REBECCA GAYLORD moves from one Hearst station to another as she’s been named news director for this ABC affiliate. Rebecca has been the Assistant News Director for the last four years at another Hearst ABC station, KOAT-TV in Albuquerque. She previously had been a morning EP in Denver and has also worked in Dallas and St. Louis. At KOCO, she replaces STEPHANIE CROSWAIT who resigned in April, one year after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Stephanie had been ND here for four years.

Barnhouse

WTVR-TV, Richmond, VA…longtime employee SHERYL BARNHOUSE has been promoted to news director. She’s been the interim ND since BILL ANDERSON left in April, and the Assistant ND for the past eight years. She first joined this now-owned-by-Local TV-but-soon-to-be-owned by Tribune CBS affiliate in 1998 as a producer. Sheryl began her career as a producer at WNCT-TV in Greenville, NC.

Hedrick

KOLN/KGIN-TV, Lincoln, NE…STEPHANIE HEDRICK joins this Gray Television owned CBS affiliate as News Director. She’s currently the EP for another Gray station, KWTX-TV in Waco, TX. She’s also reported, produced, and anchored there. Stephanie also taught English at a school in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ramsett

She replaces SUSAN RAMSETT, who’s been promoted to General Manager here. Susan joined the station as news director in May of 2011, and was promoted to GM last month. She’s a longtime Gray employee, having earlier served as the ND and anchor for Gray’s WSAW-TV in Wausau, WI. Susan also worked for two stations in LaCrosse, WI, and spent two years working for a medical foundation.

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Congratulations to eight local stations which received nominations in the National Emmy Award nominations which were announced on Thursday. Click here for the complete list.

WWOR-TV, the only commercial over the air station licensed to New Jersey, has cancelled its last newscast, a 30 minute broadcast at 10:00 PM, and replaced it with a program called “Chasing New Jersey”. This New York Times story looks at the controversial move.

Speaking of the Times, it also looked at the recent spurt of station sales, and suggests that some of the buying is driven by the opportunity to buy stations in markets with a lot of political advertising.

Former ABC News correspondent CAROLE SIMPSON has been named winner of the RTDNF Colonel Barney Oldfield Distinguished Service Award. Carole retired from ABC in 2006 to become Leader-in-Residence at Emerson College in Boston.

Goldberg

Congratulations to old friend HARVEY GOLDBERG on his retirement from television at the age of 64. Harvey’s spent the last 19 years of his career at ABC News, working in Atlanta with my client and friend STEVE OSUNSAMI. Harvey’s also worked at CBS News and worked as a news director at WDIV-TV in Detroit. Harvey’s a Wisconsin native, and he’ll spend most of his retirement rooting for his beloved Green Bay Packers.

Another ABC News veteran, MARK LIMA, moves to VP/News of Fusion, the new network that’s a joint venture of ABC and Univision.

BRAD LUCK has been named Assistant News Director at WVIT-TV in Hartford/New Haven. It’s a return to the East Coast for Brad, who’s a Maryland native. He’s been an EP at KSWB-TV in San Diego and also worked at KTLA-TV in Los Angeles for ten years in a variety of roles.

MARK PARRICK moves from producer at WFLA-TV in Tampa to Kansas City, where he’ll be an EP for WDAF-TV.

Wilhelm

Three management promotions at KWCH-TV in Wichita. KIM WILHELM, who joined this CBS affiliate as a reporter in 2001, has been promoted to Assistant News Director. She’s currently the Managing Editor and a Fact Finder Investigator. And two veteran producers have been promoted to Executive Producer.  JENNIFER SEARLE will oversee the station’s morning newscast while ROB MARTIN will supervise nights before moving to days in January.

One-time Indianapolis News Director KEVIN FINCH is headed to academia as a Visiting Professor at Washington and Lee’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications. Kevin’s a former ND at both WRTV and WISH-TV here in Indianapolis, also worked as WTHR-TV and began his career as a producer and reporter in Illinois.

GM Notes:

DON RAY is retiring as GM of Gray Television’s WSAZ-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV, a job he’s held since 1989, through at least three different owners. He’ll be replaced by MATT JAQUINT. That was one of several GM moves announced by Gray this week, including the promotion of SUSAN RAMSETT in Lincoln that we reported above. You can read about the rest by clicking here.

July 5, 2013

Greetings:

I hope you had…or are having…a great holiday.

As you might expect in a holiday weekend, not much activity on the news directors front, but have some interesting items for you.

Just ONE new ND and ONE newly named ND this week, leaving our count of open news director jobs at 21.

We have ads for TWO news directors positions (one a blind box ad), TWO new ads this week for EP positions in large markets, as well as a number of repeat ads for news management jobs in a wide variety of market sizes.

By now, most of you have heard of the latest station group purchase, but we’ll provide some a link to an article below. We’ve also got a link to an NPR story about a Louisville station that is promising not to hype ‘breaking news’. And in our GM Notes, we’ll share information about a 20 year North Carolina GM who passed away and the departure of a Kansas GM.

All that…and more…below.

New News Director Opening:

WHP-TV, Harrisburg, PA…DAVE BAER has left this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate, just three months after he arrived and just a few weeks after he was charged in a prostitution sting.

Newly Named News Director:

Bongiorno

WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, OH…ALEX BONGIORNO returns to TV News as the next news director for this Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate. Alex left WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh last October after 3 1/2 years as ND there. She had earlier been an ND in Spartanburg, SC, and had worked in Tampa and Las Vegas. At WCPO, she replaces LANE MICHAELSEN, who left the station last March to become ND at WGCL-TV in Atlanta. In the interim, former Scripps news executive JEFF BROGAN was named General Manager here.

Names in the News:

It’s old news by now, but the latest station consolidation involves Tribune buying the LocalTV stations. The L.A. Times (itself owned by Tribune) reported on the news here.

NPR this morning offered a report on how Louisville’s FOX affiliate WRDB-TV is promising viewers it will not hype ‘breaking news’. Take three minutes and 31 seconds and listen to it by clicking here.

GM Notes:

Longtime WXII-TV (Winston-Salem, NC) GM RENNIE CORLEY died this week. He spent 20 years of his 43 year broadcast career as GM of WXII. That station’s current boss, HANK PRICE, remembers him in this broadcast editorial.

KSNW-TV (Wichita, KS) General Manager JOHN DAWSON has announced he’s leaving this newly-acquired-by-LIN Media NBC affiliate. He’s been commuting to Indianapolis during his almost four years as GM there and told the staff it’s time to stop what he called ‘the insanity’ of the long commute. John’s a former GM in Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne, and Birmingham and ran his own consulting firm.

Finally, congratulations to Northwest Cable News (Seattle, WA) News Director WAYNE LYNCH and his wife KAREN who will celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary next Wednesday, July 10th. A note of congratulations can go to: wlynch@nwcn.com
